I recommend practicing using just one color but using black and white to change the values. You will learn just how many shades of color you can get just by adding black or white to a single color. You may even find new colors you really like and didn't even know existed! 😁

I love that you're working with oils! I love them and I'm doing an independent study in figure painting next semester. One thing that may help on your color palette journey is to put a mid-tone grey under your glass palette. I personally have a mirror frame I use, so I took the card board back and painted that. It really helps see the colors clearly.

I recently did a mural with a whole load of premixed colors for the interest of time, and I noticed the same thing, that it allows you to focus on the values and saves a ton of time. It’s making me rethink my process as I’ve historically tended to mix as I go from a set of warm and cool primaries

That painting reminds me of the land around the city that I live. I live in Northern California and we have a lot of wide open farmland between the different cities, and right in the middle of all of it is a little community college that I attended and this reminds me of those drives out to the campus because it really is quite pretty out there.

I agree, I think color saturation should be more varied. I consider vibrant colors as another tool to draw attention, but that means you need a lot of less vibrant colors throughout the painting to use that tool. Obviously nothing is in stone in art, just my preference. Using really vibrant colors throughout is like using only mid-range values in a piece, a waste of visual grammar
