  • In this video, I'm trying to show you what a fuzz and big muff is by comparing them. David Gilmour fuzz tones are hard to get, he used Fuzz Face till 1976 and he switched to big muff around that time. Can we get big muff tones with fuzz? Can we get fuzz tones with big muff? Let's hear a lot of sounds and you be the judge!

      I had a BOSSME-80 but the tones weren't quite there, so I bought a VOX MV50 preamp to put at the end of the signal chain (I play straight into PA), and that changed the game in completely the right direction, but it failed after 18 months. I now have a BOSS ME-90 which has a few more "modellers" and "pedals" including their clone of a Big-Muff, but I would welcome your advice on how to get closer to the tone I had which was similar to yours. If I remember right, DG used fuzz at varying levels, and sometimes with OD/DS pedals as he felt it gave a warmness that the guitar and amp alone couldn't. Am I right do you think?

    honestly fuzz face is much cooler, you can use it as heavy fuzz and overdrive and it sounds amazing, big muff is just kinda smoother, works well with couple of Davids sounds, he didnt use it everywhere. with fuzz face you can cover early years much closer, obscured by clouds meddle tdsotm. fuzz face got that sweet treble voice

    You have become the greatest expert on Gilmour's tones and playing on the RUclips, for sure. Thank you for the stuff you do!
    As for the unusual low gain settings for Big Muff, I love how that sounds on bridge pickup. It was amazing to see you using it for AHM funky part and that early Floyd stuff, because I had an experience playing those songs live with the same 'not appropriate' gear and settings.

    It simply depends on the era you are in the most. If you split gilmour's career in two big groups (pre animlas - post animals, in order to simplify things) it's one (fuzz) or another (big muff). If you're into less complex rigs and more "raw" sound go for the fuzz face. If you like a more articulated sound go for the big muff. It's a matter of flavours rather then right or wrong.

    Both have their place in Gilmour tones. The muff is usually, with overdrive, smoother. I personally use a germanium fuzz face. I don't have a big muff yet.

    Love your channel bro. The Lunar Module isn’t exactly a Fuzz Face ! Whilst parts of the circuit are similar to a FF, lots are not. It’s a super versatile pedal, I make a version of it, but it’s not a fuzz face.

    The Big Muff really improves dramatically with the Rotary after it. There's more clarity and less 'muff' to it, does it change the EQ?

    I like my Skreddy Earnie fuzz. I can clear it up by dialing it down. My Wampler Triple Wreck will get close to the same sound, but with more mid range,while also being able to transition into overdrive, depending on the settings. Lastly, I have a modded tube screamer that when paired on the left side (down signal) with my modded Metal Zone can get a crunchier clearer Fuzz with good sustain. I can't say one is better than another. They are just subtly different.

    Thank you. But I'm confused. What about the Colorsound on the Hipower pedal. How and where does that fit in here? Because that sounds awesome too.

    • @mustyguitar
      @mustyguitar  9 дней назад

      that's an overdrive actually. it's different category. fuzz is fuzz and big muff is actually a fuzz too.
      we can compare something like tube driver and colorsound, or, pastfx td-y (tube driver clone) and hi-power (powerboost clone) in another video.
      how and where does colorsound fit? well, if you want to play sheep, pigs (rhythm parts, not solo. solo is big muff), shine on, have a cigar etc. you should get a colorsound.

    I have always like the Fuzz Face for anything up to DSOTM. I think the solos from “Time” and “Money” just sound better on a Fuzz Face. Plus, it does that cool trick where it can be an overdrive when you roll your guitar volume down. From “Animals” on (I don’t think WYWH had any fuzz on it… maybe on the last track in small doses), it’s a Big Muff of one kind or another. At that point, I think it’s more of a question of “which Muff?”. It all depends on the tones you’re going for, which album or tour, etc.

    The Muff has always felt like a very “precise” fuzz to me. Its sound is very focused and much less spitty when compared to a classic fuzz. A classic fuzz is just way more versatile imo, the ability to clean up so well makes it so powerful. The Big Muff has one massive advantage though, it does one thing and it does it REALLY well, be a Big Muff. You simply can’t recreate that with a classic Fuzz.

  • @Lander-bo2rq
    @Lander-bo2rq 9 дней назад

    youll hate what i have to say... cornish p-2 cleans up with guitar volume... or at least the echoline silicon high gain fuzz. but it has too much mid range and a flabby bass. so i wouldnt recommend it. i went back to using my va 73 rams head. also you should try the devtech gilmour muff. great video, i will say, i dont use fuzz (unless you consider muff to be fuzz, but i consider a muff to be a muff) i use my pastfx powerbooster for the fuzzy like overdrive stuff, and it works so good! i have 5 muffs, 2 of them i discredit because they arent that good, but the three that i switch between are triangle, patriarch, and 73 rams head. and they cover all my fuzz/muff needs.

    I've tried, but I can't make Muffs work for me. It just disappears in the mix. I've tried boosters and other things, but they either don't work for me or they change the sound of the Muff too much. I'm usually playing in a two guitar band though. You're not using boosts at all though. Any tips?

    • @mustyguitar
      @mustyguitar  9 дней назад

      Well, boosters don't add much to the eq board if any. you can try using an overdrive before or after, but honestly, if one big muff doesn't work for you, you should try another. I recommend a mid boosted big muff like green russian.

    If you want to dial in David’s tones from the last 30 years what you really need is a Chandler or BK Butler Tube Driver.

      very insightful. an overdrive is not a part of this video though.

      @@mustyguitarUnderstood. And you absolutely do a great job capturing David’s original tones. They’re great! I’m only pointing out that for the vast majority of his current live tones, he uses the tube driver for both overdrive and distortion, then will sometimes accent it with a Muff (or a Pete Cornish Muff clone).

      Does the Tube Driver give the Muff the clarity, that's missing by itself?

      tube driver is gilmour's toy from 1993 till now. from 1977 to 1979, he used colorsound for overdrive and series of different overdrives till he landed on tube driver. he used tc electronic booster, he used proco rat, he used boss sd-1...

      @@mustyguitar What I’m saying is that Gilmour used the FF for the first albums but changed for Big Muff for Animals. He boosted/EQ the BM with a Power Boost and after that with a TD. But there is a change from FF to Big Muff and he didn’t come back to FF after that.

    • @roscius6204

      @@mustyguitar Thanks, I had a look.
      I have an FZ5 on my board in an ES8 switcher, so I'm currently trying out every possible permutation available.
      The other drives and boosts are a Fulltone 2B, Compadre, Riverside, BluesBreaker a single loop side chain with a Klone, Argo, Tim, SD-1 and ODR-1....
      Parallel with the Argo and levels/Eq tweaked by the Riverside gives some interesting variables. Midi really helps there.
      I was in the habit of dialing the fuzz at 12 but lately I've found it's best backed off.

    Let's not forget that Gilmour used to boost Big Muff with other pedals, while fuzz is a bit picky and requires to work as a standalone pedal, comparison should take care of this.

      I have a sunface and it works best with an OD after it thru a clean amp. that or the fuzz alone thru a dirty amp.

    • @mustyguitar
      @mustyguitar  9 дней назад

      That's not always correct. He did boost big muff sometimes. On studio recordings, there's only big muff. On Gdansk he used tube driver AFTER big muff. On PULSE, he used overdrive BEFORE big muff. on live at pompeii 2016, it's only big muff, not even compression. On delicate sound of thunder, no boost.
      I think we shouldn't confuse ourselves with additional info for now. There's a great video about big muff boost: ruclips.net/video/gZsoaf02mVk/видео.html

    • @chrisradzion2148
      @chrisradzion2148 9 дней назад

      I used to think that. But it varies. He paired the FF with the PowerBoost, but the order wasn’t always the same. He paired the Muff and the PowerBoost and later the Tube Driver, but again, the order changes, and he had 2-3 Tube Drivers at times.
