Tbh I love the final version of press factory because it has more chaotic nature in its theme while the beta version sounded pretty empty when it’s a factory zone
I'm surprised this whole video didn't mention the unused version of Press Factory Act Fruit, which is a completely different song from the released one, but uses the same instruments.
1:43 Music Composers don't use "Soundfonts". Composers use real instruments or VST's. An example of a VST is the Korg M1, which is the synth where multiple different instrument noises, including the Brass Noise from Sonic Mania ("The Brass Of Power") originates from. Another example of VST's are the "XPand!2" and "Vacuum Classic" VST's which are the ones Jun Senoue used in Sonic 4 Episode 2. And Genesis Music also doesn't use a soundfont. Genesis Music uses the YM2612 and SN76489 Sound Chips. In terms of different styles of music from different composers, just refer to them using "different instruments" and/or "different instrumentation". By the way, I am not trying to be rude at all. I'm just saying that composers don't use "Soundfonts". Because ever since a soundfont that contains a few Genesis Instruments called "The Ultimate Genesis Soundfont" was released, a lot of people now make "Genesis Remixes" using that soundfont. When you say "I know how to make Genesis Music", that means you should know how to program music using chiptune trackers (such as Furnace or Deflemask). But, if you just take a MIDI and slap a Genesis Soundfont on top, that doesn't count as "being able to make Genesis Music". I'm just leaving this comment so people can avoid confusion about instruments and programs that composers use.

Yeah, I always had a feeling that the "Sonic 4"-ish tracks (courtesy of none other than Jun Senoue) weren't intended to be finalised that way, but a lack of time and budget prevented other composers from re-arranging them. Personally though, my gripes with the soundtrack are mostly relegated to how ungodly repetitive and awful some themes are: the main menu, world map, the Fang encounter in Speed Jungle act Sonic and ESPECIALLY the early game boss theme. Also Press Factory act 1's theme is awesome; it's the only one that truly benefits from the harshness of the "Sonic 4" soundfont given the level theme and I will die on this hill. Funny how that since the original PFZ1 is considerably less harsh sounding, this one's final arrangement might've been intentional. Still prefer fan Genesis remixes of that one though.
@@JadeJovian At least the Sonic 2 boss theme is awesome enough. And if you meant the sound test menu theme, I do find that one does get old pretty fast. But again; my gripes on Superstars OST were with the few super repetitive awful faux-Genesis tracks; and there's also very few super repetitive tracks from the classic games. So I'm not sure what you're going for by saying "most of these songs" are the same length.
Sonic R has an amazing OST but it isn't great gameplay wise. Controls aren't great (especially on Saturn if the PC version's selling point of improved controls is anything to go off of) there isn't much content (with the padding being extremely punishing towards the player) and the character balancing is not great
3:29 so instead of just using this better sounding track... they made the consious decision to go back in and make the final track WORSE... What is this game's problem???
Hey! I honestly thought the polarizing diff in superstars OST was because sega hired tee Lopes last minute because jun senoue is the main reason we have many genesis esque tracks in many modern 2d games, which fans have expressed hatred before. And also cyber station has 2 different unused versions!!!
I see what you mean with the Press Factory comparison, tho I vastly prefer the one they used. The aggressive lead instrument fits the vibe of the stage better, tho I do agree that they could've toned it down a bit (Doesn't help either that this stage is AFTER Lagoon City Act 2, one of the best tracks in the game-)
Superstars OST's inconsistenty mostly comes from Senoue as sound director. He's always been inviting anyone he can to record music since SA1 and letting people do whatever they want but it backfired with TSR which was mediocre but at least consistent and Superstars because there's just too many clashing styles and instruments.
Also related to sonic superstars in my Mario fangame I'm currently updating the first level is inspired a little by Bridge Island Zone and has a remix of Windy Hill From SA1, I gave it the name "Windmill Valley". The fangame has a lot of Sonic Inspired content in it. I gave mario a cool moveset where he has the Flame Dash and a DIG/Spin move as well. It's a pretty good moveset for Speedrunning. My Fangame is Called SMB RMX Land 3: Now's The Time!! It's my sixth entry in my fangame series. I'm updating and revamping all of my entries to fix some issues or problems they had. I recently finished revamping my first entry. It turned out pretty good I'll say that. My sixth entry has a cool gimmick where it has split paths like sonic and knuckles on the genesis/mega drive. It has a little sonic advance series inspired content as well. I'm planning something pretty cool for the new update for the game. I won't say much about it as it's gonna be a cool surprise. Have a good one dude loved the video.
I just hope that SEGA allows the arrangers some extra time to stuff their Tee Lopes-ified variations of the songs into update patches. SEGA's disregard of the damage that time crunches can inflict on both the artist and the product has been evident for years, and it's very disappointing.
No, not all songs in Superstars were composed using the instrumentation found in Sonic 4, which is why some songs, like Pinball Carnival 1 or Lagoon City 1, have no early full versions that align with that sound. They weren’t composed with that instrument set to begin with. The musical medley we hear during the credits was absolutely composed after the fact and, according to the OST, done by Yuzuru Jinma.
I think Cyber Station Act 1 soundtrack (Unused) sounds kinda good and Press Factory Act 1(Unused) sounds pretty good But yeah I wish Superstars had consistent tracks in the level of Mania Quality or Majestic as Lagoon City(all 3 acts) Bridge Island(All acts) Speed Jungle(All 3 acts) or Carvinal Night(All 3 acts)
There was a cyber station act 2, the bossfight music in the files is referred as Cyber Station Act 2, and it is kinda strange that we have 2 bosses in 1 act, alsothe song has a faint connection to the main melody just lacking the you are my hero from 3d blast leitmotif
I wish they allowed us to change the soundtrack to classic and modernish sounding music instead of us being stuck with an extremely inconsistent soundtrack.
I think this soundtrack gets overhated by the Sonic fanbase too much. I can't hate a soundtrack with masterpieces like Lagoon City Act 2, Sand Sanctuary, and Pinball Carnival. Even the Sonic 4 sounding ones still have good melodies and compositions. They really just should have delayed the game by 3 months or something so the other composers could finish remixing the rest of those tracks into better versions.
I think the majority of this game’s ost is not very good. Which is a shame because I actually enjoy a few of these songs like Speed Jungle act 1 and Lagoon City act 2
I actually wonder if some of these tracks are leftovers from the cancelled Sonic 4 Episode 3 & were just repurposed for Superstars with new arrangements. Wouldn't be the first time they'd do that, such as with the Boss theme in Sonic 4 Episode 1 being the unused/scrapped boss theme from Sonic 3D Blast, or some Sonic Adventure tracks being rearranges of Sonic 3D Blast songs too. Reason I think this is because some of the unused tracks sound way too similar to the style used in both Sonic 4 episodes. I think it's entirely possible anyway, that some of the tracks used in Superstars are just compositions that have been reused from the cancelled project.
I feel like even with some of the few songs that sound really good, the zone selection gotta be the most generic sonic archetype stages ever, with the most sonic 1 type names. I bet you that no zone in this game is as memrorable as the few original stages in Mania. Edit: And I'll say it, I'll count even the reused stages aswell.
The Sonic Superstars Soundtrack debate has always been tiring to me, I understand why people were mixed on the ost since so many people are very passionate about Sonic music, but it got to a point where people were talking more about the music than the actual game itself. I felt like people gave better constructive criticism to Jun’s music in the game than the gameplay.. to me, the soundtrack is fine. There’s just a few songs that actually border on unbearable listening.
Although this soundtrack is a bit of a mixed bag due to its inconsistency, there are some really good tracks Bridge Island, Pinball Carnival, Press Factory (in my opinion), hell the Fang and Eggman final boss themes are absolutely stellar From the looks of it, most of the composers that worked on the soundtrack either worked on other Sonic games beforehand (Jun Senoue, Rintaro Soma, Tee Lopes) or some that either have worked on other Sega projects or relatively new composers Despite the disconnected soundtrack, I wouldn't really say that it's the composers fault as even with whatever the hell was happening, they did the best they could and I can commend them for that
Coming from someone who does like Press Factory’s OST, the unused one does sound better on the ears. And the unused Cyberspace boss stage is much better than the final version in my opinion. Although I suppose the more retro sound of the final track fits the stage better.
After reading the comments, the hate for some zone tracks, especially Press Factory is exaggerated a litte just be glad we don't have to listen same type of melody in Sonic Forces classic green hill
Exactly, if people want bad classic Sonic music they should go listen to the Forces Soundtrack, all the songs sound like corporate and out of touch and sound like 8 bit stock music and the instruments are so amateur and ear piercing it's embarrassing, I genuinely wonder how they even thought Classic Sonic music sounded remotely like that (This is all just my opinion however)
Sonic superstars has a great sound track minus fangs boss press factory act 1 the finished version and a few of the tracks from battle mode but everything else is good
You can’t say ANYTHING good about the music in Sonic Superstars. It’s JARRING, INCONSISTENT, CHEESY, and EAR-BLEEDING. Nearly EVERY other Sonic game has better music than this DUMPSTER FIRE of a game!
This is probably a hot take but I honestly don't mind the "inconsistency" of the soundtrack. Sonic games have had multiple styles in their soundtracks before this is nothing new. And people's reaction to the "Sonic 4 sounding" songs is ridiculous imo.
Honestly if I'm being completely honest I have no problem with the superstar soundtrack and also I know this is completely off topic but a message that I tried to send on one of your live streams but apparently just did not get seen by you so I'm going to resend this real quickly hot take Sonic 06 is better than Sonic forces Bro use the freaking broken disc from Minecraft as the unused version of song that is hilarious also I'm sorry if these message is a bit broken in the English voice type has gone to total s*** it used to be good anyway have a nice day thank you for making this video but I personally see no issue with this soundtrack also by the way my favorite song from the soundtrack of Sonic Superstars is cyber station THE USED ONE that old one is trash 🗑️
The unused Cyber Station Boss theme is amazing. Also Sonic Superstars OST is pretty good y’all are overreacting. But I don’t expect anything better from Sonic Fans. Like Press Factory is amazing what are y’all on about. Only bad tracks are the boss themes. (other than cyber station) Sonic 4 Episode 2 got some good tracks too don’t undermine it.
_"Also Sonic Superstars OST is pretty good y’all are overreacting"_ Ah yes, I love having a new 2D sonic game which it's music has an identity crisis. I mean it's not like any 2D sonic fangames exist or even Sonic Mania (official game), which were more consistent than this somehow. And it's not like this inconsistency wasn't done back in origins when some of the s3&k songs were replaced and sounded worse than a prototype for sonic 3.
@@LolipooChimichanga I didn’t say it was consistent I said it was good. Fan Games usually have one of two composers. @@mober7430 _"I didn’t say it was consistent I said it was good."_ The soundtrack being inconsistent makes it more meddling than previous games that WERE consistent. _"Fan Games usually have one of two composers. Including Sonic Mania (which is a fangame btw), Sonic Superstars had 19 composers so that’s not even a fair comparison."_ There are other games out there with many people working on the OST, and can still have each song sound like they belong in the same game. And no, Sonic Mania was published by SEGA. By that definition makes it official. The develepers happened to be sonic fans. Never understood that logic. _"Just proved my point that y’all are overreacting about the soundtrack. Bro has NOT heard of an opinion lol."_ I know what an opinion is. I'm just saying that some of this criticism is justified when you account in to how generic the zones are compared to previous games, which IMO makes them a bit more forgetable. I expected a sort of evolution of both Mania's zone ideas and music direction, and I'm definitely not alone on that.
@@LolipooChimichanga By your logic SEGA publishing Sonic Mania automatically means SEGA are the people behind the game which is not true. I never said that the game wasn’t official. (bros going back to check rn lol) Also none of us know what was going on in the background. They clearly had different visions for the music and they most likely didn’t work together well. How does it bother you SO much to the point that it ruins all the good tracks for you? I also don’t know why you’re copying what I say to justify anything you say, kinda annoying ngl. The only one I can see them doing is one thats has a space atmosphere. Not a planet atmosphere like Planet Wisp or a Spaceship like Death Egg Zone. I'm still hoping a Sonic Superstars Plus will happen and if it will
I am 100% sure that the soundtrack will be fixed
Sonic R was was SEGA’s greatest 3D game of the 1990s!!!!!!!!!!!!
Although this soundtrack is a bit of a mixed bag due to its inconsistency, there are some really good tracks
Bridge Island, Pinball Carnival, Press Factory (in my opinion), hell the Fang and Eggman final boss themes are absolutely stellar
From the looks of it, most of the composers that worked on the soundtrack either worked on other Sonic games beforehand (Jun Senoue, Rintaro Soma, Tee Lopes) or some that either have worked on other Sega projects or relatively new composers
Despite the disconnected soundtrack, I wouldn't really say that it's the composers fault as even with whatever the hell was happening, they did the best they could and I can commend them for that
My Theory Is That Sonic Superstars Was Supposed To Be A 2d Game Just Like Sonic 1,Sonic 2,Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Why didn't they use the unused version of press factory it actually sounds good.
Coming from someone who does like Press Factory’s OST, the unused one does sound better on the ears. And the unused Cyberspace boss stage is much better than the final version in my opinion. Although I suppose the more retro sound of the final track fits the stage better.
Sand sactuary still slaps me ngl
Cyberstation bosss sounds like cyberspace
After reading the comments, the hate for some zone tracks, especially Press Factory is exaggerated a litte just be glad we don't have to listen same type of melody in Sonic Forces classic green hill
Exactly, if people want bad classic Sonic music they should go listen to the Forces Soundtrack, all the songs sound like corporate and out of touch and sound like 8 bit stock music and the instruments are so amateur and ear piercing it's embarrassing, I genuinely wonder how they even thought Classic Sonic music sounded remotely like that (This is all just my opinion however)
The next question at this point will be how well will this OST age in the next 10 yrs. Great Vid by the way 👏👏
thanks!
When you posted the broken Minecraft disc on your community, I thought you were going to review all the discs from Minecraft, Also Great Video
Sonic superstars has a great sound track minus fangs boss press factory act 1 the finished version and a few of the tracks from battle mode but everything else is good

I prefer the Sonic 4 music.
Oh god the csz beta boss music is so much better
You can’t say ANYTHING good about the music in Sonic Superstars. It’s JARRING, INCONSISTENT, CHEESY, and EAR-BLEEDING. Nearly EVERY other Sonic game has better music than this DUMPSTER FIRE of a game!
What if one day sega stopped making games?
I never knew this
I see you accidentally swapped the footage when talking about Sonic having good games and bad games, please check your videos before uploading them
LOL
This is probably a hot take but I honestly don't mind the "inconsistency" of the soundtrack. Sonic games have had multiple styles in their soundtracks before this is nothing new.
And people's reaction to the "Sonic 4 sounding" songs is ridiculous imo.
Idea: face reveal when you 30K
lol no
@@SFproductions1 okay..
wow. The Sonic and the Dark Brotherhood soundtrack is not bad apparently 😳🧐
Ngl Superstars has such a forgettable soundtrack imo
LOL Sanic can't even get his music straight, pretty rough.
Honestly, I'm completely honest, to be honest.
The unused Cyber Station Boss theme is amazing. Also Sonic Superstars OST is pretty good y’all are overreacting. But I don’t expect anything better from Sonic Fans.
Like Press Factory is amazing what are y’all on about. Only bad tracks are the boss themes. (other than cyber station)
Sonic 4 Episode 2 got some good tracks too don’t undermine it.
_"Also Sonic Superstars OST is pretty good y’all are overreacting"_
Ah yes, I love having a new 2D sonic game which it's music has an identity crisis.
I mean it's not like any 2D sonic fangames exist or even Sonic Mania (official game), which were more consistent than this somehow.
And it's not like this inconsistency wasn't done back in origins when some of the s3&k songs were replaced
and sounded worse than a prototype for sonic 3.
@@LolipooChimichanga I didn’t say it was consistent I said it was good. Fan Games usually have one of two composers. Including Sonic Mania (which is a fangame btw), Sonic Superstars had 19 composers so that’s not even a fair comparison. Just proved my point that y’all are overreacting about the soundtrack. Bro has NOT heard of an opinion lol.

The soundtrack being inconsistent makes it more meddling than previous games that WERE consistent.
_"Fan Games usually have one of two composers. Including Sonic Mania (which is a fangame btw), Sonic Superstars had 19 composers so that’s not even a fair comparison."_
There are other games out there with many people working on the OST, and can still have each song sound like they belong in the same game.
And no, Sonic Mania was published by SEGA. By that definition makes it official. The develepers happened to be sonic fans. Never understood that logic.
_"Just proved my point that y’all are overreacting about the soundtrack. Bro has NOT heard of an opinion lol."_
I know what an opinion is.
Is this how you always are when you argue with someone? In fact I’ll do the same thing cause why not? “AnD nO, sOnIc MaNiA wAs PuBLiShEd By sEgA. bY tHaT dEfiNiTiOn MaKeS iT oFFiCiaL. dEvELoPeRs HaPpEnEd To Be FaNs. NeVeR UnDeRsToOd ThAt LoGiC 🤓” (idc if you call me immature for using nerd emoji) You’re the type of person to be disturbed by anything someone says. Must be very fun at social gatherings.
@@LolipooChimichanga I see you edited your comment and with the amount of zone/level ideas and places that have already been done in the series. How can you expect entirely new zone themes and names that haven’t already been done? They have been running out of them and it shows. There is only so much you can make.
The only one I can see them doing is one thats has a space atmosphere. Not a planet atmosphere like Planet Wisp or a Spaceship like Death Egg Zone. Just a zone set in space where you can see another planets and the sun and stuff.
