  • August is an important month for the pro-democracy movement in the Philippines. It gives us the time we need, especially in these very difficult times, to reflect on the importance of cherishing our democracy, and remember those who fought for its very survival. We remember President Benigno Aquino III forty days since his passing, as well as President Corazon C. Aquino, on the twelfth anniversary of her passing.
Here, Benigno S. Aquino III, then Senator of the Philippines, delivers a eulogy for his late mother at her necrological service at the Manila Cathedral on 04 August 2009. Arguably, this was the speech when Filipinos began to see him as the only one who could build on his parents' legacy as a potential candidate for President of the Philippines. On the fortieth day since his mother's passing, Aquino announced his candidacy. He won the presidential election on 10 May 2010, serving as President of the Philippines from 2010 to 2016.
