Big thanks for showing that on el cheapo recorder! I'm begining to beleive that biggest expence in my music learning is my time, because I don't need uber expensive instrument!!!
    All best!

Certainly! It is all about ability and time not about what you play it on. If you are good you will sound great on anything. If you aren't so good you will sound not so good. I do youtube videos with my keyboard and I doubt that I would suddenly become a hit just because I used a better instrument.

@@ziomatthewmusic4205 Agreed! When my ex-wife bought me my tenor saxophone on my 50th birthday the guy at the store told me that it was not the instrument that makes you a musician play good but a musician who makes the sax play good. He was right. However, in a symphonic orchestra... the richness of the sound becomes apparent.

This is a true story from someone who has been playing recorder for over 60 years:
I was preparing a piece for soprano recorder and found I sounded best on a clear plastic lime green $7 student recorder (the same Yamaha model as Sarah's). The piece seemed to work best for me on this instrument instead of my $200 rosewood instrument. I played the piece at a recital and this is how I did it.
I kept the recorder in my bag until the moment I stood up to play and whipped it out. Without delay, I put it to my lips and played the piece, then took my bows and put it away. After the recital, folks came up to me and asked what kind of instrument I used. I amazed them by showing them the student instrument. One lady complained that she had just bought a hand-made expensive instrument and that the plastic instrument (which, by the way, was not a poor instrument at all, just inexpensive and mass produced) sounded better than hers. Of course, that was because I had practiced extensively with my recorder and knew how to make it sound good on this particular piece.
Which all goes back to something that my recorder teacher told me: 90% of a musician's sound comes from him, and only 10% comes from the instrument. This is true for anyone. Charlie Parker played concerts on a plastic alto saxophone when he had to pawn his own instrument for cash. I've played gigs on broken down pianos and managed to sound fine. It's a matter of working with what you have to make yourself sound as good as possible.
In my opinion, a good instrument will make it easier for a good musician to sound good but a poor musician will sound poor on the best instrument. The "cheapie" Yamaha is a reliable and practically indestructible instrument that can be taken anywhere without risk of harm or loss.

While I mostly play the pennywhistle now, I still keep 6-7 recorders around and play them once in awhile - nowhere near as fabulously as you do.

It awes me to see that a $10 instrument can sound so good in the right hands . I'm just starting to learn the recorder ( once again ) . I purchased a Yamaha yrs-24b (like yours , but natural white) . I know it's not an expensive recorder , but sounds and plays way better than imagined . Of course you really know how to make it sing . I've been enjoying your videos the last few months . Thanks for a ll the helpful info you have shared with me and the rest of your viewers . Your comparison video between this $10 plastic Yamaha and your $1000 hand made concert recorder is what prompted me to get the yrs-24b .

It's also common to just write it in straight eighth notes, and then just write a tempo/rhythm note at the top something like: (♫) = (triplet: ♩ ♪), or a something like "played in swing time...". Makes it easier to write the tune that way :-)

Two of my favorite ornaments in the same piece: Scotch snap and the roll.
Overall it sounds like a bit of a commercial for Irish Spring soap, which I don't mind. But more reminiscent of a half dozen sea chanties I know. I am only mystified that I never herd this before, and I have a half dozen or so Clancy Brothers CDs?

Just curious, do you have a good fingering for a roll on d''? I haven't found one I'm happy with.
Actually it would be really nice if you could give us whatever roll fingerings you've been able to work out for the recorder. There are plenty books that give fingerings for tin whistle, but even though the recorder is really just an elaborated whistle they often don't carry over. It would be interesting to see what a professional recorder player who has an interest in this sort of thing has been able to come up with.
