    I’ve wanted an African Grey since I was 13 years old and have been doing research for about 11 years. When I was ready to get an animal, I just decided on a budgie instead because I thought that even though I had years of research I needed some experience with birds first to be sure I was really ready. I know it sounds like overkill but I just want to be sure that when I get my African Grey, I can give it a good life.

    Three things to know about African Greys:
    1. They are fluffy
    2. They are extremley inteligent
    3. If treated corectley, they can be your BBFF (Best Bird Friend Forever)

    what i am scared of my african grey is that she will choose another person in the family as her favourite one and not me her owner. Is this possible?

    • @felixmccracken234
      @felixmccracken234 5 лет назад +11

      James Troisi it is quite possible,but usually the person who spends the most time with them will be “their person”.but every bird is different,and a bird can still love you even if your not their favorite.

    I wish he would have brought up some differences between the subspecies. Timneh are less likely to be phobic than Congo’s are, timneh start socially vocalizing faster because they mature faster (which is part of why they are less phobic) timneh are less prone to stress related negative behaviors like plucking, it’s best to make sure a grey is 100% fledged knows how to fly and land properly to avoid issues related to stress they should be left flighted or delay clipping for a lot longer than some other species their size. The timneh is more likely to pair bond very young and keep that bond if they aren’t worked with more often by other members of the household the Congo is more likely to switch bonds and be a more active flock member with slightly less effort. All of these things correlate to the differences you see in the subspecies in the wild, the Congo tends to be considered baby in their flock for considerably longer than the timneh, the timneh is considered adult to their flock and start integrating out of babyhood at around 6 months the Congo is 12 months that’s why the Congo when they pair bond seem to go from one member of the house to another, they see the initial caregiver as mom the other people are other flock members that will make suitable mates the timneh matured into the flock faster ergo will pair bond off to whoever that caregiver is because they are much closer to maturity when they enter a new home from baby-hood. These can be integral facts that can make living with these birds easier for some people as well as help them troubleshoot when they do have issues behaviorally.

      @@mr.django6283 Love is a uniquely human concept. So no. Your bird, dog, cat ,bunny rabbit, hamster, etc will never love you. But they can bond with humans and even other animals that are not of their species. They can give and receive affection, but that's as close as an animal can ever get to "showing love."

    • @silvergtotwinturbo9984
      @silvergtotwinturbo9984 5 лет назад

      @@wandy39 All it takes is to have no fear, patience is the key and try to interact with it every day. Try not to make it a ritual, meaning that if its 10 o'clock you must see to your bird, they get used to times and could take abandonment hard, ie, featherpluck. So make it random but give him a lot of fuss each time you interact with him. Make him come to you and try not to force issues.

    My friend has one and before covid I visited nearly every week. He was used to me and I was the only one he chatted with a lot and practiced his new words with. I was and still am petrefied of being bitten. However I was always convinced he really liked me and he also obeyed me to get on his perch when I needed to close his cage. I'm going back there this week, I've got a cucumber and some cardboard he can keep himself busy with. Also some almonds to put in his bowl. What can I expect? Will he recognize me? Will I be able to bond with him again in the 3 days, I'll be up there? Or do I need to introduce myself all over again? He's not handtame and is known to bite when you want to handle him.

      If there is a head lowering but the head is cocked to one side or the eye is looking up at you, it's not an invitation to pet. Our female does this sometimes. A true invitation to pet will be a bow and no eyes trying to look up. Also, sometimes they will raise feathers where they want a pet/scratch. But you really have to know your bird's body language as a whole because raised feathers can mean a number of things.

    • @RichardP539
      @RichardP539 6 лет назад +3

      I imagine the bird staying with a friend or relative is an option (as is boarding). But you need to know if the bird has bonded to you. For example the guy who has the cockatoo named Max agreed to watch him while a neighbor was out of town. But since the original owner had only had max for a short time the bird ended up bonding with his caretaker (original owner let the 2nd guy keep the bird). His channel is Mr Max TV. He has a couple of Q&A videos that I think are really good.

      Give him time to adjust and get used to a new owner and environment. They become very attached and will likely be missing him. Do youre research, learn what you can and start basic trust building exercises. The bird might be to much for you to handle and if that's the case rehome it. Your uncle would want what's best for you and the bird.

      @LACKOFBORINGSELF as a proud grey owner , I do not recommend u to be the parent of an African grey. It’s a lifestyle and make noise at night? Well they DO sleep , so unless you are up and active late at night in ur house then no. Please don’t get one. These and all birds need quality time, love, patience but more then that they need the right person/family who has researched and done the homework for what raising/owning any species of birds will takes. for the sake of the birds quality of life . half the ppl who think they want a parrot and get one end up getting rid of or mistreating them and wonder why the birds don’t act right. Because the owner does not act right. It’s not fair to them research on what owning a parrot is about.

      Probably depends on where you live. The bird shop by me usually sells them for between 800 and 1000. But shelters often have them for a smaller adoption fee (but usually still a few hundred dollars). Shelters often get them because of the death of an owner or they had to move and weren't able to take them, so they tend to be a few years older, which is actually good since they will have their behavior pretty set in their ways so you know what you're getting. A fairly big cage and playstand are needed for a grey that can cost from 300 to a grand depending on how big it is. And greys are smart and get bored easy so you need lots of toys and to replace them fairly regularly. So expect that the original investment will all the equipment, food, toys, and the bird to cost probably 2 grand up front.

      Kayla Ramos probably if he's used to seeing white people in the house, introduce them to black or whatever other races you might be friends or associates with.

    This is referring back to sociology all over again! Wow! I guess my sociology class that I am taking right now in college isn't as bad, because these parrots will act almost exactly like humans!

      Hi Shooga, if he starts to get really vocal, leave the room, when he quietens down walk back in with 'Good boy' and a treat, don't reward him for bad behaviours. Talk to him and get him to try to talk back. They are quick learners. Had mine 16 years, what I'm trying now is to get him to lie on his back in the palm of my hand. He loves going over backwards whilst on my finger so now I'm gradually putting my hand on his back and letting him get used to the feeling of being 'in my hand'. He has let go with one foot so its getting there. He has to give me a kiss before I swing him upright whereby he chuckles 'hahaha'. Good luck

    You should never snatch a bird like that nor molest the bird like you did most the video. You’re sexually confusing and frustrating your bird. DONT BE THAT GUY…
