  • Meadowlark Log Homes is located in Libby Montana with a covered production facility that can handle up to five or more log homes or log cabins being pre-assembled at the same time, depending on the sizes.
    This video includes stunning footage of highly detailed and demanding crafting techniques from the time the first log is laid until the walls go higher.
    The history of Meadowlark goes back to 1976 when we build our first log cabin. Actually, our legacy goes back many centuries into early 1700s Europe where our family immigrated with other Amish families and brought the heritage of that wood crafting into the United States being involved in building Amish timber frame barns and homes. Part of that background is the reason we have been able to develop our unique, highly refined system of building the world’s finest handcrafted log homes.
    Today, instead of being limited to hand saws and hand drills, we use a combination of hand tools and highly advanced tools such as the Stihl fuel injected chainsaws!

    Elvie, it has always been very clear how proud you were of your children- your sons particularly- and I don't doubt a double handful of the young men who work in the yard and plant. What selections and how long does it take to apprentice and "top out" one of these extraordinary craftsmen- I rather doubt you can just run an ad of call a job staffer! It is always a treat to watch these homes emerge from flying chips and swinging logs- it is truly a dance your crew have done a time or two! FR

      Thanks for your kind words and observations. I’d say at this point my son is mostly the one who should get the credit for building the team we have over the last 5 years. It’s not easy to develop a team this size all with high levels of skill. We’re very thankful for all of our team. It does take a lot of work and time to train and put it all together.

      @@AmishMeadowsOfficial So take us further into that "locker room" that you showed us for the first time I think in this drop. I may not be a member of your community, Elvie, but I do note you raise tremendous children, and those children are becoming men and women- pretty outstanding individuals at that. Indeed, it isn't easy, buy neither my Lord or yours promised easy. Let some of them tell their stories, tell us why they are where they are and plan to stay. Because, Elvie, the lot you work with look like men to cross a very big river with. FR

    It takes hundreds of logs to build one beautiful log home and that means cutting trees that took years to grow. Do you also have a tree replanting program to replace those cut? This thought keep crossing my mind as I watch each amazing episode of log home build.

      We don’t plant trees, but our forests are seriously overcrowded and overgrown. The trees naturally replant themselves, but you have to realize that in Montana there are far more trees being replaced, and growing than what we take out of the forest.

    Great vid! That crane and fork work to pick up and off load logs shows how much care and respect for the craft you guys have. Out of curiosity, how big are those logs diameter before and after being milled? They look huge. What would one of those long log weigh?

    • @AmishMeadowsOfficial
      @AmishMeadowsOfficial  2 года назад +1

      We use many log diameters because trees grow big on the bottom and small on top but the average log diameter is about 12”. And our cabin logs are a bit smaller. The house in this video starts off with approximately 14”-16” diameters. The larch logs are heavy even when dry. It’s similar to some hardwoods in weight and far heavier than pine. Some of the logs in this video are likely as much as 600-1000 pounds.

    I noticed that the bar on the chainsaws has a light bar, is this for decreasing fatigue or is this bar more precise cut for notching, also do you use a special chain for cutting that doesn’t rip the log too bad

    • @AmishMeadowsOfficial
      @AmishMeadowsOfficial  2 года назад

      We exclusively use the Stihl Light bar, which weighs about 2 pounds less than a regular bar and that is significant. It is for cutting back on fatigue when you carry the saw very long.
      It also is a professional high-quality bar.
      The chain we use is Oregon 3/8” pitch with just the right tooth combination and style so it cuts fast and smooth.
