One thing that is wrong is how back in the day, how much often would people redeem the codes themselfs, yeah adults did but the most important buyers (not tech savvy parents) where the main focus, so the rewards being online where like 3 walls from actually being there (being able to log in, have enough points to redeem a reward AND pay for shipping because I doubt Nintendo did that for free) Nowdays you can get my Nintendo points from online purchases so most likely they are giving weaker rewards to compensate for greater demand
Wait no the shipping was free? Well anyways there is actually the extra wall of being able to know what the fuck club Nintendo was and if they shipped the rewards to your location (Latin America)
