Great info here but it depends on the industry. I have courses based on metal guitar and that's pretty much how I make my living. So I wouldn't say courses are dead. I am looking to expand into a membership style platform for recurring revenue..
Courses, email lists, newsletters… I’ve been trying to grow my RUclips channel since 2008! It’s only NOW starting to take flight. I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. I have spent thousands on ads too. Now I am out of money and almost out of patience. We are fighting bot farms, and algorithms, AI… it just sucks!
Courses, email lists, newsletters and spending thousands on ads will only get you results based on the quality of your content. I just checked your channel to see what videos you're putting out and although you are doing well in putting content out where your videos are lacking heavily is in quality. If people do not perceive your videos to be of quality they will not stay long nor will they subscribe. Contrast this to people who have news channels woth only 2 or 3 videos and yet they have thousands of subs, why? Because their video and editing quality is top notch. When people know they're going to get quality videos from you they don't mind waiting long for tue next upload and they subscribe. Quality still matters. Get better at quality and your channel will grow.
(1) Shannon (OP)... Very nice studio background. Simply film your videos in landscape (horizontal) mode rather than in portrait(vertical) mode, and you're golden! (2) Perhaps step-up your vids by adding an interesting, engaging intro, for example a selfie video while walking outdoors. One RUclipsr (cannot recall his name at the moment) begins his videos (in selfie mode) by talking while getting out of his car and gathering his laptop and papers, and waking towards his small office, continuing filming as he walks thru front door down a hall then into his office and settling at his desk. One time while getting out of car he dropped his car keys and while bending to pick them up his camera view was all over place (trees, sky, his leg, the pavement, etc). The outdoors while walking video intro can be super engaging. Hit me up with a comment reply if you'd like more ideas. (3) @EliCamacho, with all due respect I disagree with you about needing pro editing etc. The largest channels (e.g. Mr Beast) have over-produced videos with crazy-good pro editing plus utilize animated graphics, animated fire and explosions, carton toilets flushing, dancing emojis etc to hold people's attention--which is required for the types of content they produce (e.g. playing practical jokes; riding in fast cars; etc) and required for the low attention span viewers they cater too. However for instruction videos, over-produced videos with pro editing and constant animations is NOT necessary. Ryan Lee (owner of this channel) in a recent video he mentions he does not even edit his videos, so when he makes a talking mistake it's shown on video. That's great. In fact, "casual" is preferred. (and over-produced is not desired). Because in the world of instructional videos, "Content is King". One simply needs an okay studio/background (Shannon yours is very nice), a good mic, and good content. (which you have) Ryan Lee 's vids are casual, filmed from his office with his bookcase behind him, which is perfect. Most of the famous marketing gurus (Frank Kern, Eileen Wilder, Austin Ford) also film from their home office, with a paper flip chart behind them. They spin around to write on the jumbo pad with marker, then turn back to the camera to continue speaking. (4) For instructional videos, Vanity Metrics (huge subscriber counts, crazy high video views, etc) do not matter. Again, content is what matters. ("content is king!") Ryan Lee has 6k subs and his videos don't have huge views, but his vids convert, and people buy his stuff. Jason Fladlien, who mentored Russell Brunson and tweaked Russel's challenge to bring it from not converting well to converting like crazy, Jason films in front of a black wall, wearing a hat and a hoodie or tee, and he has a low subscriber count and low video views, yet his videos convert and bring him large course sales and income.
I was considering doing this very thing… my book/course is just too large to try and drop all in one chunk. The “cohort” term is perfect, and the live aspect is an angle I hadn’t thought of. Thanks!
I'm finding that videos about RUclips and/or building your business on RUclips are getting the most views. If you look at other small niche channels that have at least 1 video about this topic, it has way more views than any other video on the channel. RUclips loves self promotion. It's just a theory, but maybe worth it. ❤
COHORTS I am very interested in this idea since I have been learning everything to start my channel and options for creating an income while helping others solve a problem. Thank you!
I am 64, retired, and on a fixed income. I was an educator and could really use a system to develop an extra revenue stream into my finances. I would love to learn your “Cohort” system. My name is Vic.
For promo, do you use email to let people know about your micro cohort course? Also, I’m assuming you record the sessions - do they have access to replays? Thanks!
I remember paying $5k+ for IT tech courses in the early 90's. I must have completed 5 or 6 over 10 years. But they were highly specialised training that invariably led to a higher paying job. People took them to get ahead in IT. Fast forward thirty years and it's totally different. You can learn new tech from a 16 year old guru with a RUclips channel in a day. No one is going to pay for a course if they can get the information for free on RUclips or elsewhere. It has to be exclusive, niche based and worth it. Who's going to pay 2k to learn how to make bonsai?
It's no longer just about selling "information". We don't need MORE. But people WILL pay to have it organized, taught in a system and to have questions answered. You're right, if it's just "how to make a bonsai", no one's shelling out 2k for that. And THIS is what bothers me about people teaching "courses".. because they act as if you still can.
Thanks so much. And while I now live in Connecticut--I was born and raised in New York! (we all have that Northeast no-nonsense hustle with a hint of snark!)
Ryan: I was a member of your email lists a LONG LONG time ago. The bandwidth was unlimited in 2020. Remember using G+ with 24 hour unlimited bandwidth? Remember the unlimited bandwidth sources (G+ leading the pack) even in 2013? I punched into this because I knew your name. Remember the late Chris Lang? You knew him as an email delivery specialist that could take your list and jump the open rate exponentially. i'm sure there's value here. I stopped at 6:58. You were slinging stuff but I know at the bottom you'll have some value. Stop over selling. You really have been around 20-25 years, So have I. And I always wondered what happened to you? You have ALWAYS been a great promoter. I can learn from what new promo you've got. So at bottom this is a compliment.

the way you talk I see uncertainty, selective of words to say, you're too nervous, my senses tell me you are untrustworthy, I don't buy your pitch. I agree scammers are on the rise, and they are many, and you are one of them. Just being frank and honest, what's your credential anyway!!!
Oh he's just created a couple of amazingly successful 7 figure and 8 figure profitable businesses (mostly in the fitness and health world). 😎 look him up, and you'll find plenty of evidence of his credentials. He's one of the OGs in the biz world who thrives and teaches from REAL world successful experiences and makes a world of positive difference in this 'scammy' biz niche! 💯
