You might not like these but I do! Ohuhu Molokai Extra Wide Alcohol Marker review

  • These markers are big and beautiful! I was sent the new release of Ohuhu Molokai markers the other day and I can't stop drawing with them! They come in 4 sets of 6 alcohol markers and they feature a 3/4" nib on one end. You can pul the nib out (I tried it and show it at the end of the video) and refill with an alcohol ink of your choice (Ohuhu does not offer ink refills at this time but they plan to in the future for their most popular colors to start) making this an economical alternative to the empty wide marker Copic sells. You can see the marker here: shrsl.com/3vo3h at Ohuhu and now on amazon: amzn.to/3QW9kE9
The Molokai wide markers use the same color names and numbers as the Honnalulu series (brush) markers. They would be a nice addition to that range.
    Pros:
    Price
Good color selection of colors you would want in a large format (landscape, architecture, basics, greys)
    Comfortable to hold
Nice amount of line width variation.
    Fun to Use
Color name and number are printed on the marker body
Come with indexing stickers to color and put on the caps for accurate color identification
Nice reusable packaging with acts as a marker stand/storage and protects them.
    Cons:
Only available in 6 color sets, no open stock options
No refill ink or replacements nibs available as of 1/17/23 (and it looks like the Copic wide nibs are not a match but you can use Copic or any other ink to refill them)
*This is a nitpick but I don't link the one neutral grey in the grey set as the others are cool grey, I think they should have given us a darker cool grey instead of the random neutral grey.
Bottom line: I really enjoy using these! I hope they come out with a skintone or earth tone set because I would like to have these for large figure drawings. I think the sets are well thought out tho (except for the one neutral grey) and I plan to use them with my other markers. I am keeping them handy on my table so I do. I'd recommend starting with the Haycion oasis set if you want to try these out as there are some good landscape colors in there and that is where I think you would want to use wide-fill colors and see how you like them. I can't wait to see what colors they have next, I hope they expand the line but they are off to a wonderful start! Or at least offer packs of empties or clears so we can make our own at a lower cost than Copic.

I have not historically been an alcohol marker person, mainly for budgetary and space constraints, and I've learned about myself that having too many color choices in anything/any medium is distracting and makes it hard to focus on choosing effective colors to layer/glaze. These sets seem to alleviate that problem, plus I love how quickly one can block in a background so you can move on and focus on building up your details; I loved your realistic shadows on the couch around Penny and the combo of colors in the water of your landscape. Definitely a page to bookmark on Amazon!

My friend got two full sets and offered a few of our friends one of the extra sets. Thanfully most of them wanted the blue tones because i wanted the oasis set. I think the color palette seems more useful. I still havent opened it so i appreciate the swatches. I do wish it included a lighter base green, maybe a linden green (winsor gouache shade) but the colors included are still really nice.

Hullo Lindsay, excellent use of these markers and your landscapes are wonderful! Your details are amazing on your Puppy's Pic! I think if I needed a wide marker these would now be a first choice for me! This is saying something too! I did not see a need for the Copic wides when they were available, yet you made such an amazing demonstrations with these markers and you were not setting out to do a demonstration video! To get the entire set of under $100.00 is typical of Ohuhu! Wonderful video Lindsay, thanks for showing everyone the good and better of these markers!

It's good to "see" Penny and that lovely landscape. The water in the landscape is spectacular. Hope you filmed your process there and will offer a video! It's also fun to watch videos for products that don't tempt me at all -- it's relaxing without feeding the want-monster. I bought a ton of markers when I started my art journey and now I mostly use them to blend pencils. I'm clearly not a marker person at all, wish I could trade them for more pencils....but it's good to see that companies like Ohuhu are getting creative for those who do like markers. Creative companies offer promise for everyone, because they probably spur competitors to get creative too. Along with the colors you mentioned, these kits are also missing the pinks, purples and baby yellows, so I suspect those will be coming out this spring for Easter or something. Enjoy your new markers!

$100 total to get the 24 set seems steep, especially for Ohuhu!

So I have a set of 12 Prismacolor brush tip/bullet tip professional markers, but I just can't seem to get them to work. Anytime I try to blend out one color with a lighter color (or any color), the overlap area develops this weird blotchiness and strange looking texture. It's like the pigment in the markers doesn't want to mix or layer, so some is settling out of solution, creating a spotted, blotchy effect. I've tried different papers, but none of them have fixed the issue. I have tried the Strathmore mixed media visual journal (100% cotton vellum), Strathmore drawing visual journal, and Canson Fanboy illustration pad, and they all perform poorly compared to what I would expect from what I see from online tutorials. The Canson illustration paper blended the most, but also had the most pronounced splotchiness, and a lot of bleeding. The drawing paper was a little better in bleeding, but still had issues with the texture. The mixed media vellum paper was basically unusable, because the marker immediately soaked into the paper. When I layer the lighter color over the darker color to blend them together, the lighter color literally just goes on top and doesn't mix, and it's like these little pigment dots slowly building up slight, uneven opacity over the darker color underneath, creating an extremely splotchy and weird effect.
I should mention that the markers and all of the paper I used are many years old, because I quit art for 4-5 years and didnt touch any of my supplies during that time, and only very recently starting getting back into it. Maybe the issues is that the sizing on my paper has gone bad, though I remember that when I first got the prismacolor markers, I barely used them specifically because I could never get them to work right and look good. I used to enjoy using the cheap unbranded alcohol marker set I had, and that's why I bought the prismacolor markers in the first place, so I don't know.
I guess I'm trying to figure out if this could be an issue of technique, or if it's just the markers themselves. Could I have gotten a bad batch?? I think I might try to buy a couple markers from a different brand open stock to compare them with the prismacolor ones and the no name ones, because I used to really like using alcohol markers like 7+ years ago to create abstract designs, and that was something I did in my sketchbooks a lot. Or maybe I should buy an ohuhu marker pad. I'm not sure which is the problem here haha. The cheap set performs better on all papers, but still doesn't perform super well. It's definitely not as splotchy as the prismacolor, but the blends could be smoother. I think the illustration paper is soaking up too much of the marker too quickly. It seems like both the paper and the prismacolor markers themselves are contributing to the problem. I wish I knew how they are supposed to preform, but I can only compare to RUclips videos.
