The piano is out of tune. Terribly. This composition is hardly a masterpiece. The choir is dreadful. For a decent perofrmance, check out the Serkin/Kubelik BRSO performance. A decent piano, great orchestra and well trained chorus.

Yes, this is the same record, 23 February 1952 recording date. Both Ates Tannin and Trovar list only this commercial recording, although Trovar says there is a private recording of a live performance given on 22 March 1952 In the March performance, Kurt Sanderling is noted as conducting the "USSR Radio and Television Symphony Orch." During the February session Dr. Sanderling conducts the "Moscow Radio and Television Symphony Orch." They may be virtually the same ensemble for all I know. Hope this helps.
After listening to the same piece played by MARIA YUDINA and richter I realized what a huge gap lies between them, Yudina is a true romantic and richter plya it like a woodpecker, painting the sound in one color, like Tom Sawyer painted the fence. His phrasing has no sense of direction, it's static and dead.
+MrPianoevil it is technically impossible to paint a fence in one colour without variation. The amount on a brush varies with each stroke. Also u have to take into account the state of wood panneling. Some are more absorbent etc.

Yudina's recording of Beethoven's Fantasy, though made a year earlier than Richter's was released eight yers after her death, in 1978.

Минусы этого варианта исполнения классиков, уверен, в своей сумме превышают сумму возникающих минусов. К сожалению, советские, российские хоры классического направления никогда не страдали первоклассностью, как произошло и в данном случае; а здесь и звукозапись хоровой части просто ужасна. Мне жаль, что в последние лет тридцать в России исчезла традиция исполнения подобных вокально-симфонических драматических произведений классиков на русском языке, что, понятно, отнюдь никак не способствует популяризации классической музыки.
