I guess you were not around in the late 60s ... when this came out in L:P form; then it went on CD with the EMI label; and it's still around and nothing matches it, though that's just my opinion. Barenboim is perfection.
Truly an intensely, yet delicate exchange between piano and orchestra and THEN THE SEXTET and CHORUS ADDS THE CLIMAX. just so magnificent. I LOVE BEETHOVEN
I can't believe how many great recordings there are of this piece. This one has an incredible studio sound to compliment the patient but passionate performance. Thanks very much for the upload.

The slow crescendo this piece travails, in volume and intensity is incredible. The wall of sound achieved at the end is palpable, vital and all consuming.
There's a 3 CD set of the complete works, 1--5, with the choral fantasia ... still excellent even on CD; on the EMI label (Amazon sells it) ... I wore the LPs out (on the Angel label) long ago. Grateful they produced them onto CD ... Best performance ever, in my opinion--don't know of any other recordings that include the Fantasia at the end of the 5th.
Great tempo here. So many interpretations are far too fast, like the soloist is late for a meeting. It doesn't gloss over or run roughshod over the emotional content of each note the way some others do. This one broods on the notes in a way that I feel the composer would have approved.
How is the incredible “discordance” achieved starting at approx 3.07 marker. I had same comment on Martha Argerich performance. I have not seen the full score. Particularly skillfully performed by these two Argentinian geniuses. Michael Harvey, Luxembourg
