Haha, when this video first came out I was mesmerized by this, not understanding anything here, 7 years later I'm now an Electrical Engineer and this is child's play, time really flies.
There are a lot of do-it-yourself articles on the internet but having studied yours I think it is the best and it looks good. I shall be making one shortly.
Good gosh, thanks for the post! I do not even have to have to make a home depot run for this! There have been so many times I would have used this rather than pull out the Mig. I think ill bore the arms and run the leads up inside the arms but for most people this may not be a option (less common tools/drills). Great job, thank you for taking the time to post this and so many other things. Btw am I correct that this will draw the same amps as the original microwave? I have a couple of push button reset breakers (10 and 15a) and I am thinking of using one. (again the odd things I have here, I serviced electric door openers, mostly garage type for 18 years and saved old stuff cause you never know when you going to need a relay, contactor or other odd part). Thanks again
Masterbuilder333 well im broke, i find free microwaves all the time.. i may make one so count me.. ppl don't just wake up and say their ganna build this, they find an interesting video like this or it starts with an ideal from goofing with electronics and projects.. i know this first hand. but idk what exactly i would spot weld and since im broke it will probably be a while till i need on then i may build it.
I've been needing a spot welder to finish a project I have been working on. I just need to fuse some music wire together. So yeah, Some people do wake saying, "I should make a spot welder today." In a few days, I'll do just that.
This is the first video of yours I watched. I can't believe you're gone. I spent so many nights watching your videos, staying up late, and taking it all in. I hope you're doing fine, wherever you are.
I was mostly talking about his lack of a band saw which is probably the most useful saw there is.. in hind sight I should have been more specific. I do appreciate the fact that he makes great stuff with common household items and tools (although where I'm from a band saw is a common household tool).
The tips will last longer and stick less if you tilt the part being welded. So that the left of one electrode and right of the other contact the item and the current flows through on the diagonal. Also mount it on a bench and add a cord or wire connected to a foot pedal to free a hand. Could even add a spring to make the pedal two stage, one stage to contact the part and with a bit more pressure the second stage engages the switch.
For those attempting a similar device I recommend getting copper mig welding electrodes. Cheap, made from a copper alloy which prevents steel from sticking to it and is designed to withstand high temperatures and the come with a M6 threaded piece for easy fitting...
+eraldorh yeah youtube payment doesn't work like you probably think. its not view based (well views are relevant but ill explain in a minute). when you monitize a video, youtube place ads in your videos, and a portion of the profits youtube make from the ads on your videos (i dont know the exact amount but its pretty small, my friend has like 4000 views and allows ads and he checked how much hes earned, 10p... in like 14 months) is diverted to you.
Thanks so much for this great video. The best so far, plus the way the device looks is much better than the others. Not only that but the way you explain everything is crystal clear; greetings. Please just ignore the shrimp heads and their stupid comments. Keep on doing these great projects. We love them.
Anyone copying this fine project should consider adding a relay between that little interlock switch and the transformer. All microwave ovens have a relay or triac that switches power to the main transformer. The little interlock door switch does not, and is not rated to handle the full current draw of the transformer. [ I note here that it obviously worked in the video, but that doesn't mean it wasn't limiting power or heating excessively which could be dangerous in one's hand.] The switch should control the relay which then can supply full power to the transformer, safely. TLDR: I'm suggesting a small improvement for a great project.
+A1Skeptic Yes, I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw that little switch. This is a good idea although I use my everlast tig welder for a spot welder. I just needed to adjust the downslope to get the spot welds consistent.
No, the power relay is generally a large stand alone relay about two inches square. Newer ovens may do away with the relay and use a large power transistor or triac to control power to the transformer and so to the magnetron.. You can trace the power lead back from the primary of the large transformer to figure out what they are using to switch power. The secondary of the transformer will be connected to a capacitor, diode, and the magnetron.
it doesn't conduct electricity, is relatively inexpensive, easy to use, and if it does somehow manage to catch fire, you use the fire extinguisher you should have nearby.
Not really. The reason tools and other stuff aren't made of wood isn't because it'd catch fire easily but because of weight. We use metal boxes because they are strong and light, but honestly the best and safest boxes tend to be plastic banana boxes. Though plastic is even easier to catch fire then wood. Electricity causes electrical fires only during improper wiring, or people being dumb. Most electrical fires happen in bedrooms using extension cords that get pinned under heavy dresses or bedframes that end up breaking the insulation and leading to exposed arcing wires.
wow never thought it could be that easy had a few jobs I was using a spot welder resentley will love to try to make your spot welder it's looks amazing to thankyou
RockerEAB .....not just his voice......every molecule of his entire channel has eroded into nonsensical videos that appeal to his child-like subscribers. This video is an example of his glory days. Sadly, he doesn't understand this yet.
Your projects are amazing. I like playing with mechanical and electrical components myself but I learn by doing. I am not trained in any way. Watching your videos it makes me want to buy some power tools and hop right into these.
That is awesome, it will only take you about 5 days to make without killing yourself in the process. It would be amazing to have a big pile of junk laying around just so I can melt a couple nails together. Save 200 dollars and spent a week making a wooden fire starter. If you dont have a job then you wont lose money making it! Totally safe and after a day of use hopefully you will still have your vision and not look like fredy Krueger. Built yours today!
Believe it or not, but i actually have all these parts in my scrap pile. It's not about the money or time, but about the process of CREATING from scratch. Seriously...
Great build, but please take under consideration of the cost for ALL materials. I hate it when video makers don't take under consideration that others might not have the parts required for the build already available (tools excluded of course). So in the future, please don't say that it is only a few bucks when you could be spending $100+.
Lol seriously? Shut up dude. Stop being a crybaby. This guy is a genius and this video is amazing. Don't cry over the cost unless you actually planned on following his instructions to make one.
I'm just making a recommendation. I never said he was stupid or made any sort of negative comment about him. I stated what i disliked about it in hopes that he may consider listening to it. As for the instructions, I did listen to them and I followed them. But what if you don't have the parts available? That's all I was saying.
Do they have craigslist where you live? Or something like it? Do they have scrap yards or metal recycling businesses? No matter who you are or where you live, if you want one you can get a MOT for less than $10. What else is there? Some wire? Some wood? Even if the whole thing costs you $20, compared to $150-250 this is a freebee
I think his quote is to show what can be achieved if you're willing to get your hands dirty rather than buying everything. Also, I'd say old microwaves are pretty much a renewable resource lol
Ian Hawthorn Thain Unless the welder is a woman who doesn't happen to be wearing a bra. It happened one day in the shop where I worked. After that, a bra was required safety gear for all female welders.
In one of your FAQ you told us that you often make projects for which you need to do another project. What about a video whic would enclude this spot welder to show us what it can do? Great videos!
He only has a couple of turns of wire for the secondary he added to that salvaged microwave transformer. That is only going to produce a couple of volts. You couldn't shock a mosquito with it. It will produce masses of current if shorted. Go touch the terminals of your car battery and see that you feel nothing. They wouldn't leave it exposed if it was dangerous, yet it supplies 150 Amps to crank the starter. In fact people use car batteries to spot weld instead of the transformer in this video.
Jeffrey Deutsch Thanks Jeffrey. I am still gun shy from when I was 10 and held angle iron for my Dad to tac with his arc. Never a problem before, but his time when he touched the stick, the 220 curled my arms and after 40 years I forget the technical reason it happened and I am a bit paranoid, lol
scott lund dad probably forgot the groundwire and you became the ground conductor. and arc welders use a higher voltage than the about 2volts this spotwelder uses.
Jaden Smith Technically when you bring the two tips together, you are touching both terminals as you hold the metal. I was concerned about becoming the ground as what happened when I was young. What FlexDRG said about it having minimal shock value helped....yet I am still a bit shy. I apreciate the heads up though, thank you
scott lund holding the metal inbetween the electrodes won't shock you. your resistance is much to high, certainly compared to the electrodes & wiring so all current will stay within the cirquit and not flow through you.

tbh thekingofrandom content quality startted declining after his death. i still miss him
Man I miss him... I watched his videos so much😭
Thank youtube, putting this blessed mans vids in recommended,
Thank you
You should seriously patent that thing
PwnageDev true
PwnageDev May I Ask Why Are You Typing Like This?

PwnageDev
lol what an excuse.
Rest In Peace man you’ll be missed 🙏
Miss you dude, youll always be the legendary king of random
Who here can't imagine Grant with a really angry face?
Im trying so hard rn but i cant
Me
I can imagine him being angry! :D
Is it a joke?
Rest In Peace man 😔 I use to watch all your videos and enjoy you building 😔
😭😭😭 I miss Grant and the old format!!!
He had to die for RUclips to start recommending these? Wow
Dude wtf
Going to miss him we all are. He taught us something that our teacher probably would never even talk about
Great build, but please take under consideration of the cost for ALL materials.
Then you follow the chain of his videos referenced in the beginning that show you how to get the parts for free.
Also, I'd say old microwaves are pretty much a renewable resource lol
he says its "out of his price range", and yet his house is huge with a pool and a waterfall.
I was thinking that too.
Ethan Krantz - That's why it's out of his price range! :D
+Anders Vestlund, he says it in the video
+Mustafa Rizvi, very true.
I was about to comment on that (about the 5 mil. views he got) but then I saw this comment
I am adding this to the Homemade Industrial Tool playlist.
Rip the best scientists there ever was🙏🙏🙏🙏
Be sure to wear safety gear. Pellets of hot metal can fly off and give you a serious burn. This is not a toy, it's a serious tool
not really it just melts it without anything flying it releases fumes
I worked for six years in a shop with spot welders. They do give off flying pellets of hot metal at times.
+Emmit Stewart oh
+Emmit Stewart why don't you marry it
Ian Hawthorn Thain Unless the welder is a woman who doesn't happen to be wearing a bra. It happened one day in the shop where I worked. After that, a bra was required safety gear for all female welders.
In one of your FAQ you told us that you often make projects for which you need to do another project. What about a video whic would enclude this spot welder to show us what it can do? Great videos!
Dammmm. This dude always finds trash and turn it into luxury
Fan Boy I know
Spot Welder, meet car. Car, meet spot welder.
This is seriously the best channel I've ever subscribed to.
Rest In Peace man, we love you😔
So touching the metal being spotwelded will NOT shock you?
First video I ever watched of his. Thank you for inspiring me.
He makes it look so easy 😏
Soppydimond 905 Your right
