WARNING:
The electrified wire of the "Styro-Slicer" can reach temperatures well above 1,000ºF, which can cause burns, and potentially start fires. This project should only be attempted with adequate knowledge and training, and under constant adult supervision. Have fun, but always think ahead, and remember that any project you try is at YOUR OWN RISK.

Project History & More Info:
This is the final video on the Styro-Slicer itself.
A lot of people have been asking why I made 2 Quick Clips, and 2 Projects for this one system. And I'm happy to explain.
The first Quick Clip was to introduce the styro-slicer, and show what it could do. It introduced the concept that it exists, that it could make styrofoam swords, guns, and airplanes, and that it compacts back together for storage.
The project video that followed (goo.gl/AO7ZaJ) was a fully produced tutorial of how to use it. It showed all of it's different features and operation, and took over 5 minutes to demonstrate. So that required a video of its own.
The 2nd Quick Clip was to preview the styro-slicer tutorial, and I put enough information in there that savvy viewers could figure out how to build it before the tutorial. And apparently some people did.
This video is the final installment, showing step by step how to make the styro-slicer. Also with this tutorial being 3-4 times longer than regular videos, it takes 3-4 times longer to produce, and since I try to put out a video posted randomly, the Quick Clips gave me a chance to show the project, and just enough breathing room to get the tutorial produced and released.
This video is all about making the Styro-Slicer, but doesn't get into great detail about how to use it.
Although the build is fairly simple, there is a sizable materials list and the video can seem quite technical. But I promise that if you take it one step at a time, you'll get it finished.
I made 3 previous prototypes of this model. Each one giving me new experience and insight into what I wanted the finished product to be able to do.
The ultimate success came when the design for compact storage actually worked out, and the assembly could compact together for quick storage. I am still very excited and proud about that feature :)
I took a lot of inspiration from different pictures on Google image searches, of professional foam cutting machines. I was inspired by different features, like cutting at angles, and adjusting the temperatures, and wanted to replicate those features.
My first prototype took just over 15 minutes to put together, and used a scrap 2"x4" piece of wood, a piece of picture hanging wire, and was powered by a transformer I ripped out of an old stereo.
It worked great, but it was also really crude and I didn't have time to make a nice version for my metal casting videos, so I never did mention it until recently. But I always had intentions to fully develop it.

3 years later, my parents finally let me build one of these along with the mini metal foundry
How’d it go
Lucky!
@ITZ TRAMDOMZ when I was 10 my parents let me cook my own quesadillas its actualy pretty easy, also I might buy the stuff to do the mini metal foundry.
@ITZ TRAMDOMZ I am confused this video was made like 3 years ago
ITZ TRAMDOMZ lmao that’s 7 yrs ago it’s three years ago
This is one of the best "build it yourself" videos I have seen...So well thought out, planned and executed.....The instructions are crystal clear...and everything has been thought out to make the project complete without guessing or asking further questions...Excellent.....JRZ

To those who also build this: when assembling the wood base make sure you look at the way he assembles it and note that he switched up the 18" and 15" 2x4 with how to screw them in.
Sean Mayfield Thanks brother, I’m assembling mine now and am watching and like WTF ? Glad I’m not crazy !🤣
Ditto!
I miss you my friend. I"m finally getting around to building this. I owe you for so much fun and education. Thanks to your wife, and friend for keeping this alive.
Give this guy some pvc pipes and he will build anything.
right
+Moe Moradi give him some huge steel pipes and probably make a nuke launcher :P xD
***** omg i'm playing the game right now by the way, and i only said that for those who don't play the game
+Moe Moradi Add a batter to that mix too
lol
lol
How to tie the knot @ 2:20
-Have the wire already be stripped, separated, and looped at the end.
-Drill the hole into the PVC pipe.
-Now, *before* you add the elbows to either end of the PVC, push both ends of the wire through either end of that tube.
-With both ends of the wire in hand, tie a simple knot (it really doesn't matter what type).
-Now, take one end of the wire with a loop, and push it back through the other side of the tube, so that you have a wire with a loop at the end of it on either side of the first PVC Tube
-Pull the original wire (the one that first enters the tube at the back) so that the knot is at the hole, demonstrated at 2:32.
-Snake each looped wire through the elbow brackets, and proceed with the rest of this tutorial.
PS: Awesome concepts, tutorials, and vids man. Keep up the work!
The first ever video of Grant's I ever watched. Thank you so much for the memorable childhood. We'll never forget the King of Random.
I wish for more videos like this. Stuff like this is what brought me to TKOR so many years ago.
*Hey guys, let's hang out! I'm going to be here in the comments for the next hour chatting with you, and answering as many of your questions as possible. So .. what's up?*

Hey guys, it's been awesome spending the last 2 hours with you. I hope I answered most all of your questions and comments. If not, there's a good chance your questions was asked by someone else, so look through the comments and see if your answer is there. I have to go back to work on the next project, so I'll see you soon with some cool new content. By the way, Propane torch is next :)

I finished two slivers, one for me and one for my sisters for Christmas. Sadly I didn't pay enough attention and bought a 500 mA transformer instead of 3 amp. I had to order a new one, but after I installed it it worked exactly as yours does. Great project, Grant!!
If you can't manage to get the knot tied in the wire, inside the pipe. i suggest using Hot glue, thats what i done. Vote this up so future builders can see this.
You is life hack king
Always use hot glue gun
Thanks Ted. You the real mvp. You know, when you arent killing folks. XD
you can also get rubber wire grommets at any electrical/electronics supply store.
Excellent build! I can see this also being useful for cutting other plastics as well. I'd also include an "ON" light for indication and safety reasons.

Planning on building this over the weekend. I've been playing with foam terrain and need a straighter cut. Can't wait to get started!
Some quick links to a few of the materials I used:
[✓] 12 v transformer (3 amp): amzn.to/2cmkPFo
[✓] 3 position switch: amzn.to/2cGZjKL
[✓] Push on/off 1000w dimmer switch: amzn.to/2c9gXEm
Np
I bought .58mm X 76.2 M 24Guage hanger wire and 6 volts wouldn't heat it up enough.
I blew threw like 3 transformers trying to get this to work and I'm a little confused on y the dim-switch comes before the transformer not after. Am I using he wrong wire? I used like thing galvanized steel wire any tips that could help me finish making this? I'm a big fan and I'm make a lot of your other projects such as the mini melt foundry and the baterangs. Any help would be useful. Thanks Cole 😂
Thin ****😂😂😂👌🏼
in the video you used a 600w dimmer, in the comments you recommended a 1000w dimmer...what's the difference? besides wattage of course.
100% of people want to make this but only .01% of people have the skills and patience to make this...
and materials
It's not that epensive, the most expensive things in the project are the lantern battery (around $10) and the transformer (10-$20) so it costs around 30-$40 plus the equipment needed are pretty everyday: power drill, saw, wire stripper; if you don't do all the extra stuff and cosmetic bits he does (rounding, spray painting, power fuse, ect)
David Lam No I don't have a power drill ANYWHERE in my house and there is no tech/woodshop class at my school.

Wow. Thanks. Perfect! The cutter is exactly what I was looking for. I plan to ask my husband to follow your great instructions and advice. He loves building items from PVC pipe so it should go over well. Thanks for all the work you put into the design and video.
Now all I want to do in my life is slice styrofoam... Damnit.
+Hymness You should watch the aluminum casting video...
I know I did :P But hey I can't do everything!
The foundry is actually easier to build than this project... I highly recommend. I use mine to cast custom aluminum hardware.
Rip.
Remember when an 8 foot long piece of 2 by 4 was about 2 bucks
Oh man, this guy has passed away.. I was so grateful as this is the only hot wire cutter video that actually made sense to me. He sounds like such a young guy in this video :(
Grant, you have some of the cleanest well paced tutorials I have had the pleasure to learn from. Thank you.
+Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" Next vid you do could you please make a parts list, it would make things a whle lot easier, thanks for making the content though!
also, would it be pausible to use metal guitar strings instead of the hangar wire?
+Cannamore I'm compiling this video into blueprints and schematics for myself, if you want I can send you a copy when I'm done. Also, a guitar string will probably only work with stainless steel string.
+Robbin_ted99 That would be extremely helpful!
Robbin_ted99 i have tried guitar string, and it works beautifly, and also, i do not need schamatics, because i am close to finished!
+Robbin_ted99 hi, is there any way you could send those schematics and blueprints to me?

bro i've take my transformer from a old stereo but i can't recognize where is the input and the output is
help please
Cool
Thanks!
This guy deserves to have the patent for this thing.
That would defeat the purpose of uploading these to RUclips, if no one was allowed to make anything he posts he wouldn't be getting the views he is.
He most likely has the right to submit this as a design patent (wire foam cutters on their own are ancient technology), but what garners massive amounts of respect is telling the world "Hey! I made this cool thing! Here's how I did it, so you can do it too if you like!", rather than going after people for infringement of Intellectual Property.
Just stumbled across this channel, and instantly, I have nothing but love for these videos.
Actually, the former owner of my floral shop built one on the same principal about 40 years ago and we used it a lot. You can buy them from craft places now, but I would much rather build my own for how inexpensive it is.
All the projects he does are based on technology that already exists. He mainly just shows us how to do it on a budget
Except for the fact that he didn't invent it, and also patents stifle innovation.
Made this today. First project like this so its a little rough, but it works like a charm! Very clear tutorial, thank you!
Outstanding instructions on how to build. I would suggest viewing the video a few times prior to attempting. Only thing, I had to find out 6v from 12 v by trial and error, but got it after one try.
Grant is my hero.
+Barnacules Nerdgasm I think that is all of us.
The 3D print master is here
Your Styro Slicer hero
thanks
+Barnacules Nerdgasm hi
5/32 inches... And americans think the metric is stupid
I think the imperial system is stupid, it's just what we're taught
We just like powers of 2, not 10
Brendan Biernacki and twelve and three
You can't say Americans think the metric system is stupid, because the truth is, we have to learn it because it's what our society and government. chooses to use. I'd rather spend my time learning the Metric system than measurements like these.
+Dominic Yeap-Holliday I would really love for us to convert to the metric system but not much I can do about that
Thanks Grant... I've done many of your projects. Anything from the Lego Gummies to the metal foundry.. Styroslicer is next. Greatly appreciated.
I like the foam cutter. Probably more useful for me than the metal foundry, but both are very clever and well-thought out. Great work!
The one thing I *definitely* would have done differently is include a power LED somewhere. Other than that, great job!
Can you tell the purpose of the LED?
@@ananyranjan8750 so u can use it in the dark
I think it’s to tell if it’s switched on or not, since it does not really change in colour until you switch it on at max power
I just said this in another comment, but since I think it's a good idea I'll also say it separately: How about a homemade telescope for astronomy? Something below $100 (below $50 is even better) that anyone could build to view some of the brighter deep sky objects, such as the Andromeda Galaxy and the Orion Nebula for instance, and also be able to see the outer planets clearly? I'd love to have that project to do...
I think it's quite difficult... With 50$ I think you couldn't even buy the lenses...
+Pota MNL Productions Alright then, disregard the price restriction. Just added the constraint to make it more of a challenge for Grant and make the project more accessible for us common folk. That, and at $100 you can get a pretty good entry level telescope on Amazon. I was wishing for a scope project in the same ballpark range but with much better imaging. Just a challenge.
+Pota MNL Productions just give him some PVC pipe and he will make a lense.
+Logan Kinney true he will find a way
+L.D. Johnson my cousins made one
Most focused effective description I've watched, so far. I've watched a few...

I just made this styro slicer and it's awesome. Great for cutting foam for a Pelican or Plano case.
OK, do not use a wire that is to thin it will have too much current and it will explode, learned the hard way.
grant... you are a very smart man, i would not be able to do ANY of this by myself let alone buy ANY of this miscellaneous items
I like the AC power supply approach. All of the other videos on this subject use DC supplies. Since you used AC you can use a common dimmer switch to regulate power. Very cool!
You're not only the king of random, you are also the king of DIY

I can’t believe he’s gone still, I just miss his creativity, it’s devastating how such amazing people can be taken just like that..❤️❤️💔
Glad I found this, had 2 4.5×3.5×.5 foot things of styrofoam I needed to cut and all I really had that was viable for clean cuts was a heated wire blade and that's way too small for anything but details

Thanks for the videos, the help and the inspiration!
Made this earlier today. Used an old powersuppy that had a 12V AC output. Did not add a dimmer or 3 way switch. Tested and works like a charm. Next step is to add a switch and fuse.

He was the only person who possessed the knowledge from the library of Alexandria after it burned
so how much will all this cost?
Grant takes the basics of science and turns it into something amazing. Great job Grant! :)
Great video. I made one just to see if I could and it works perfectly. I've used it multiple time for custom packaging. I would like to see a bag sealer. I'm sure this same configuration would work. SIT bag sealer with cutter would be cool.
Do you really need to add the complicated wiring in that ''box'' or can you just make the box and use alligator clips to connect the saw to the battery?
SkeleBonePancake try it and tell me what happens!
Not really, the wiring is so you can connect it to the wall. You can just connect it to the battery with alligator clips

Brilliant... How I admire people who've mastered building stuff. :)
5:42. I think you made a typo when editing the video. When you drill together the 2x4s, it says one of the pieces should have the 5" piece on the side, a 15" in the middle, and the 18" on the other side. I'm pretty sure the 18 should be in the middle and the 15 should be on the side.
