I have a light skin with a neutral undertone, and always got matched in store. Now that we can't go anywhere near a make-up counter, trying to buy the right colour foundation online is haphazard to say the least. Some brands give their foundations names, some have numbers but not all of them give a description of the colour and undertone. Occasionally I get it right, mostly I don't 😒! Caveat emptor it seems. Anyway, I love the look you did especially your eyes. Your tutorials are always so easy to follow which is a great help 😊.
Yes I completely agree with you. The method is only helpful if brands have a description of the undertone and the shade. I think slowly but surely, more and more brands are including the undertone in the description bar, hopefully within the next 5 years they’ll ALL be following that protocol. I’m pleased you enjoyed the tutorial and find them easy to follow! I appreciate that you always take the time to comment ♥️
You're honestly my favorite make up tutorial artist. Every video you make is just so full of knowledge. Is not only a girl doing make up in front of a cam but showing actual mastery. I have tons of respect for people that you can tell they know their stuff. ❤️

This was very helpful for those of us who even at age 50, still struggle in determining what our skin undertone is and also for helping to learn explain the difference with those Two foundations in particular as I have been considering possibly purchasing the one from Dior. Thank you for sharing your expert advice, I find I always
You’re welcome, Jana! I’m pleased you found it useful 🙂 I’ve seen a few makeup artists mix both these foundations together for something in between the two finishes. I might try it for myself tomorrow!
I was watching something else and got a phone call so it paused and I checked my notifications before unpausing the video I was watching and saw this and I couldn't click faster! And I was super into the story they were telling on the other channel 🤣😂 I have a make-up group I'm in on FB (yeah I know this tells you I'm getting old lol cause I don't understand Instagram) oh gosh anywho I have so many ladies in there trying to figure out their undertones especially now that they can't go into Sephora or anywhere and get shafe matched. So now they are stuck buying foundations online and guessing and settling on cc creams and tinted moisturizers🤣😂 that means this is going to be a very popular video real fast because I know they cant be the only ones needing help and idk how to help them. Phone pictures literally tell you nothing, 2 different phones show 2 different undertones lol thank you for this much needed video! Definitely gonna help a lot of people save some cash to keep from buying the wrong foundations over and over trying to guess lol 😆💜🖤💜🖤

I’ve been into makeup for more years than I care to say lol (just turned 50) & skin undertones is a topic that so many people have trouble understanding. It’s really a complicated subject for some & so I thought I’d expand on it a bit. So looking at the color of veins is just 1 (very good) way to see what your undertone is. Generally, blue veins=cool undertone, green veins = warm undertone, but that can be confusing for some because someone w/a neutral undertone can have either blue or green. But again, these are just very general guidelines. Additionally, the color of jewelry that’s most flattering can help too (is gold or silver more flattering up against your skin? Are both equally flattering? Gold=warm, Silver=cool, Both=neutral). Another way is looking at what clothing colors look best on you. Jewel tones, like a true purple, deep plum, rich burgundy, forest green, navy blue are just a few “jewel tone” colors that are generally flattering on a cool undertone. Now that’s not to say that these colors don’t look nice on a warm undertone, but there are other colors that are indeed more flattering on warm undertones, like Autumn shades for example, warm rusty brown, olive green, orange-y browns, maroon, mustard -y yellows, they’re oftentimes these sort-of “in between” type of colors lol. It’s a matter of taking a particular color & tweaking that color to what looks most flattering up against your skin - not necessarily a favorite color. So let’s take the color green. For me w/a cool undertone, a deep forest or hunter green would look best on me. For a person w/a warm undertone, an olive green or a swampy shade of green is going to look best. It’s like if you have a warm undertone & you take almost any color & add yellow to it, that color becomes more flattering for you. If you’re a neutral undertone, you’d probably be able to wear either warm or cool & they both can look nice. But depending upon how your neutral undertone leans (cooler or warmer) will determine which colors you prefer. And let me just clarify that this doesn’t mean that people w/cool toned skin can’t wear warm toned clothing or makeup, or people w/warm undertone skin can’t wear cool toned clothing or makeup. This is just a guideline to help you to figure out & understand what your undertone is because this is a subject I see so many people struggle with. So when you do your makeup, we all can kind of see what colors are most flattering on us. Also, have you ever noticed if we wear a foundation, or lipstick for example, that if it is too “opposite” our natural undertone, it can make us look washed out or sickly? For example, if I wear a foundation that is the right shade but wrong undertone (if it’s too yellow or orange) I’ll look TERRIBLE - washed out, sickly. Or i don’t look great in super warm toned eyeshadows either, like very orangey or copper colors, also bright yellow-gold eyeshadow is also horrible for me. Whereas, shades w/more gray in them or pinks like taupes, silver, burgundy & certain purples look really pretty. Many think that cool undertones are mostly seen on the very pale which is a fallacy. I’m a medium skin tone & still have a SUPER cool undertone to my skin, even with a deep tan. I know that was long but maybe it can help s1 to understand better bcz this is a topic that I ALWAYS see a lot of questions or confusion about.
Hi shonagh you are so beautiful I can't wait to see your wedding day pictures, and thanks for the tutorial especially the hooded eye liner bit lot's of love jacky from Oxford 😀💝 XX
Thanks so much Jacky! ♥️ I hope it all goes ahead for this September 🤞🏼 or none of us will see the photos, hahaha!!! This virus has a lot to answer for 😤 Hope you’re all well x
You are an AMAZING teacher! By far your instructions are so easy to follow and you explain the reason for every single thing and angle to use to sheer perfection! I bet if you were a math teacher I would have learned my algebra lol (I mean if you knew as much about math as you do make-up application 😆) heck you might actually be really great at algebra and there I go doubting you by saying "as long as you know it as much as you know make-up" good Lord this is the second time I rambled on this one video yikes 😬 seriously thank you for this amazing well explained and well thought out video. You are amazing! 💜🖤💜🖤
Haha, you’re safe there Sheri, maths is not my strong point but I totally got the analogy 🤣 so thank you!!!! I wish I was as good at math as I am makeup!
From a TRUE cool undertone person. CoverGirl TruBlend foundation is the only brand that I’ve ever found that has a perfect shade (& undertone) match for me - because they’re actually pink or cool enough. Even if I get a really deep dark tan & my foundation shade deepens by 2-3 shades, I can still count on CoverGirl TruBlend to have my perfect shade, which is SO RARE! I mean, brands have cooler shades, but most shades become warmer in the undertone as the shades deepen. And most brands have their version or idea of what they think is a cool shade range & still others title shades as being cool or neutral & they just aren’t. Most brands are notorious for not having a TRUE cool undertone shade range. Most do indeed fall more neutral, not cool. It’s very difficult for me to find that SUPER cool undertone that I need. I’ve tried many “inclusive” brands but 99% of the time, they’re just not the right undertone. But now, all I really need to do is bring my foundation bottle along w/me (which is my perfect shade) & compare it to a brand I’m interested in trying & if the undertone is close, I might try it. But most of the time, they’re much too warm (too yellow or orange). Sometimes I can “make them work” but at this point; with all of the hype surrounding “inclusivity,” I shouldn’t have to. Most brands just don’t go cool enough for me (except CoverGirl but only in the original TruBlend line, the newer matte one I don’t use or any of their other foundation lines either I don’t think. The CoverGirl Vitalist line was another favorite & perfect shade match & a formula that I loved but it’s been discontinued. Now I understand how it’s so easy for a warm undertone person to see that a shade might be “too pink” (too cool), but that doesn’t mean that it’s going to be suitable for someone with a truly cool undertone. I feel that it’s entirely possible that these brands are testing (& then creating) their cooler shades on people who aren’t a true cool undertone. I also feel that if a brand is going to come out with 30, 40, or even 60 shades of foundation (& grandstand about “inclusivity”) then the people that work on the shade range ALL NEED lessons in what it means to INCLUDE shades that have TRUE cool undertones. Not “sorta cool” or on “the pinky side of neutral” or “pinkish” & not being labeled as “cool” because it’s showing up as very pink because it’s being tested on a person who has a neutral or warm undertone. Or, my favorite, they label shades as having a cool undertone, but they describe it as having a peachy undertone & it looks peachy too. Seriously, a peach or peachy undertone USUALLY suits a neutral to warm undertone, but not ever cool! But CoverGirl got it right with knowing how to create TRUE cool undertones no matter the depth of color (even though they’re newer foundation launches are all neutral to warm). But these “all-inclusive” brands need to rip a page out of CG TruMatch (original formula) playbook.
How do you personally remove makeup from the waterline and under your lashes on the top lid the best/easiest way? My waterlines/eyes get so irritated when I use a cotton pad! x
I like to use a thin cotton face cloth with makeup remover on. Or a cotton bud. I remove the majority of it with a micro-fibre eye pad, and then remove the waterline with the thin cotton cloth or cotton bud.
Beautiful as always! As far as undertones go, I always thought I had cool undertones. Then I went to MAC and SFF NW 25 was a near perfect match. Confused the heck out of me, LOL! I think they should explain that their shades are named ass-backwards from what you’d think they should be 😂
@@ShonaghScott, I've seen a few YT videos over the past few years, where they attempted to explain MAC shades, but it just muddied the waters so to speak. Your explanation cleared it up for sure, thank you!
