  • In this spotlight we look at the MK-14 torpedo. The primary torpedo of WWII. It had a combustion engine that used fuel, air... and water!

    IIRC mk14 torpedoes were kept in the inventory into the 1970’s. My sub carried them in 1976

    The "bureau of ordinance stupidity" torpedo. They fked up America's torpedo in the first part of the pacific war and continuedly trying to block any improvement until admiral king step in. However to be fair they also created the excellent aim-9 sidewinder

    Ah, everything is working untill Admiral King starts asking with gun on bureos heads to find problem and fix it.

    It's fascinating that even today there are 2 types of torpedo propulsion: internal combustion & of course, electric (batteries). We could debate about which propulsion method is better, but neither produce visible wake of bubbles on the surface that was typical for wet-heater, compressed air or steam that was typical of WWII era Eels >:3
