An excellent production. Forster was indeed extremely talented and incredibly brave.

You do know that sexual relations in private between men were illegal in Britain, and not decriminalized until 1967 (1980 in Scotland, 1982 in Northern Ireland)? Though Forster lived until 1970, one can hardly blame him for not publishing the novel, or his gay-themed short stories, during his lifetime (Maurice was issued in.1971). At least he did not stipulate that they be destroyed upon his death.@@monteirolobato6830

The Merchant/Ivory screen adaptation of Maurice (1987), with the young James Wilby, Hugh Grant and Rupert Graves, is one of the team's greatest achievements -- a beautiful film that holds up very, very well. It came out at a time during the first terrible decade of the AIDS epidemic when its unswerving affirmation of love between men -- NOT excluding sexual expression -- and its happy ending were an incredible gift to those of us who saw loved ones and colleagues disappearing at an appalling rate, and the right-wing sex-negative forces revved up. I think Forster would have been happy to know that his novel had done great good.

I underestimated the novel and the movie, both perhaps the greatest among Forster’s novels and the films based on them. It is terrible to think that Forster hid it for 57 years until after his death - but it still speaks to us after 110 years.

Surprisingly contemporary. This was one-of Forster's earliest works. Shame that it took so long 2 be published

How sad and unfortunate that some people, regardless of their persuasion are so obsessed with erotic desire that they will endure such misery inflicted by another, which may in the end only result in anxiety and torment 😮

If “erotic desire” can be freely expressed, it typically ceases to be an obsession. Basically, repression is what causes the issues.
