You do know that sexual relations in private between men were illegal in Britain, and not decriminalized until 1967 (1980 in Scotland, 1982 in Northern Ireland)? Though Forster lived until 1970, one can hardly blame him for not publishing the novel, or his gay-themed short stories, during his lifetime (Maurice was issued in.1971). At least he did not stipulate that they be destroyed upon his death.@@monteirolobato6830
The Merchant/Ivory screen adaptation of Maurice (1987), with the young James Wilby, Hugh Grant and Rupert Graves, is one of the team's greatest achievements -- a beautiful film that holds up very, very well. It came out at a time during the first terrible decade of the AIDS epidemic when its unswerving affirmation of love between men -- NOT excluding sexual expression -- and its happy ending were an incredible gift to those of us who saw loved ones and colleagues disappearing at an appalling rate, and the right-wing sex-negative forces revved up. I think Forster would have been happy to know that his novel had done great good.
I underestimated the novel and the movie, both perhaps the greatest among Forster’s novels and the films based on them. It is terrible to think that Forster hid it for 57 years until after his death - but it still speaks to us after 110 years.
How sad and unfortunate that some people, regardless of their persuasion are so obsessed with erotic desire that they will endure such misery inflicted by another, which may in the end only result in anxiety and torment 😮
In a world full of Clive Durhams, be an Alec Scudder. 💜
Yes, He obviously had the upper hand on Maurice who even though upper class was putty in his hands😮😮
I love the movie and read the book now i'm listening to this
Wonderful rendering of this great novel. The voices and the accents are beautiful.
An excellent production. Forster was indeed extremely talented and incredibly brave.
Forster did not seek to publish the novel during his lifetime.
I agree. Absolutely riveting story. EM is a superb writer.

Can't bring myself to hate Clive because Good Luck Babe by Chappell Roan was written fir a reason
Surprisingly contemporary. This was one-of Forster's earliest works. Shame that it took so long 2 be published
Thanks helping with my English
Nah the way my jaw dropped when Clive said he didn’t love Maurice anymore 😭😭😭
Is this the full audiobook?
no, a dramatic adaptation
Very heavy not sure I would listen to again I will stick with the light hearted plays etc

If “erotic desire” can be freely expressed, it typically ceases to be an obsession. Basically, repression is what causes the issues.
Truer words were never spoken.
very good paragraph all to say that love is cruel
Different
After 3 mins..... gave up. "Sir" has a serious problem.
Can you be more specific?
@dodo: YOU have a problem.
Are you on a travel on the starship Enterprise at WARP speed?
Merely the awkwardness of a prep school teacher.
Perhaps he finds sodomy distasteful ? It's not compulsory to approve of it .....yet !
