    The disabled community is really benefitting from smart home tech, including smart lights. I am super grateful that accessability is becoming main stream. A smart light may seem trivial, but it is life changing for someone who is able to have a little more access to their world. Thanks for the quick run-down.

      LIFX lights can be controlled with the switch if for some reason your Wi-Fi doesn’t work. Sort of like the problem he talked about some random person turning off your lights in the video but when you turn it back on after it gets disconnected, it will turn on again and function like a normal light bulb until you turn it off with the app again. Also, smart bulbs don’t have to cost $70 or even $45. LIFX sells a good bulb for just $20 and you can even find cheaper ones from other brands.

      One thing is to not have internet access and another pretty different is the actual wifi signal not working. You can still connect to the devices offline, sorta like accessing your modem's settings.

    Luckily this video is very old. All you need these days is a router and stuff that runs on tuya (or no router and stuff that runs on zigbee for local). A good quality smart bulb these days will cost you around 15 bucks.

    Thanks for the informative video! The video is a few years old, but now, with the emerging Matter standard, for someone like me who is just starting with a smart home, Matter is definitely something to consider. When it comes to smart lights, then a related standard, Thread, is something to watch. "Matter on Thread" is probably the way smart lighting will go forward, for the reasons mentioned in the video (no need for another hub, ease of setup, and reliability). There aren't a lot of smart lights that support that right now, but that will hopefully change over time.

    The Philip one has actual light switches to replace your old ones, and won't interfere with your commands.

    • @stephengnb
      @stephengnb 5 лет назад

      I think it's the newer Echos that have Zig-bee built in, which is what the Philips Hue hub uses. The newer Philips Hue lights now come with Bluetooth built-in, so you can start using them without a hub. You could theoretically use them without a hub, as the bulbs mesh with each other, but the hub gives you more options and off-network functionality.

    You should use smart switches for any light fixture, period.
    For lamps I've been working on converting to lamp itself to be smart. It takes some work but you can rewire a lamp with a small device in its base. The lamp switch goes to the device so it can still be controlled like a dumb lamp, but the device itself actually powers the lightbulb socket.
    Sure you don't get multi-color bulbs or different temperature settings, but nobody can screw stuff up because it doesn't lose any of the ease of use of 'dumb' lights.
