    I totally agree with this. When I rise queens (the poor man method, not grafting), I use those frames because the new "free" drown comb is soft and clean and it helps having big healthy queens.
    The only drawback is when the hive start getting big (more than 5 frames). Bees tend to draw drone comb. I know it is the natural way but come on! 3 deep frames of drones is "waste" of resources. Beside no worry for drone population, when bees want to make drones they will do it no matter what.
    My favorite method is gradually adding those starter strip frames when I have that new split with new queen which help not overwhelming the new colony. After the 5th frame, I start adding frames with full sheet of foundations.

    This year I have started using craft sticks I bought off of Amazon. I use wood glue, and glue three sticks inside the slot at the top of the frame. The bees have taken to it really nice. It also gives them the option to decide what size comb to draw.

    You right David they build quicker without the sheet of wax, i have used frames with just a strip of wood across the diagonal of the frame and it was finished by the end of the day. Couldn t believe it. It s a technic called "cadre à jambage" in France, jamb frame.

  • @rpeebles

    I do almost the same. I use grooved frames because half my frames use plastic foundation. On my non-foundation frames I wax or glue in a thin strip of wood into the groove and then use an old small paint brush to brush on the melted wax. I tried the foam brush but it wore out quick and when it dried it took a lot of wax with it. :)

  • @MrSnapper1d

    Run your brush along your line.Wax on the line helps them build on it a lot better also.

    I prefer to let the bees do what they do best and this caught my attention. Have been thinking about testing a couple foundationless frames and this sounds like a good way to go about it. The fishing line is a good idea for us since we are new bk's with one hive.
    I understand it's best to put two foundationless frames as outter frames and the rest with foundation to see how they do. I'm not sure if bees have time to fill a whole foundationless hive with honey as we live in northern BC where summer is short so I won't push my luck.

    Thanks Dave, I was working on some medium frames for my supers this week and had done 10 frames with the foundation cut to make starter strips. I use small cell foundation and didn't want to burn through a bunch of it making strips so this should work great for me. I was going to use an eye dropper and fill the channel of each bar with wax rather than painting it on like you show here but will try both methods and see what the bees like.

    • @beasbeesrva2615
      @beasbeesrva2615 3 года назад +3

      Alan, being foundationless requires a little work to keep the new frames in the center of the broodnest where they are more likely to draw worker comb. Frames to the outside of the brood will always get drawn as drone comb. Nothing wrong with the queen. The workers decide what to build and a natural cell hive will have around two full frames of drone comb.

    Although Frames can be constructed without Foundation, the more Wax Bees Build the Less Honey you get, because Wax Building requires a lot of resources.

  • @jasongentry7405

    I am still growing colonies and lack drawn frames to go around. I take full frames of capped brood from my nucs, give them an empty (starter strip), and add them over my production colonies. The bees hatch, increase population and the frame gets back filled with honey rather than my honey colony worrying with drawing wax. Make the little colonies do all the work.

      In my experience the bees will start at some point of wood that is hanging down to draw out their comb. Without a guide there is no telling where on the bar they will make their comb. The point is actually more important than the presence of wax. I have been managing top-bar hives for about 7 years now, and have never used a full sheet of foundation. I used to use starter strips. Now I just use a wooden guide in the middle of the bars without wax on them.

      The bees will build what they need as far as drones. High drones in a healthy colony is actually a good sign. So what anyways. When the drones hatch just move the frame up to a super. If you take care to leave the drone frames they will build less drone frames next season. It's a give and take really.
