its understandable though. anime culture might be big now but in the past its really frowned upon. sana and momo being a normie( probably) might not even know some of the mainstream. besides japan has a variety good of anime that can easily sweep pokemon down the market in their time
Depends on what you mean by "the past". The stigma of being a fan of anime was at it's strongest in the late 80s, but it never stopped people from being fans, amd there was always a thriving community of people who were fans regardless, even then, the "frowning upon" was really only applied in the social sense, and not in terms of industry or creation. It began to gain traction throughout the 90s, even despite the multitude of changes made to Japanese products when brought to other countries (although this still happens now, who am I kidding), and this was in fact a large reason why weeaboos hailed Japan as a Mecca where they could gain the unfiltered, "true" version of manga and anime. Momo and Sana just don't have Pokemon in their interests, which is fine, but it still is amusing to see that they don't even know (or remember, given the benefit of the doubt), the bare minimum. One would need to combine all the most iconic Toku, Sentai, Kaiju, and other anime properties to even begin scratching the amount of popularity Pokemon has, and that'll likely never happen. It never disappears from the public lexicon.
It makes my head hurt that it's taking them a long time to learn info about Pokemon characters when theres a Pokemon wiki and Momo doesnt know the characters 😂☹

Honestly it’s kinda surprising how it took Samo long enough to realise who the characters are considering they’re Japanese and Pokemon was/is crazy popular in Japan and aired when they were children too
Me trying not to scream to my phone so they can hear me. It’s Jesse and James. I also heard it in Spanish and for some reason James says his name as Jamames. Iconic!!
it's so interesting that ash, james and jessie's names were localized in sk bc i assumed all the pokemon were known by their japanese names there. also pokemon was eeeeeverywhere in japan when misamo were growing up, how do they not know the characters 😭😭😭
Sana knows Doraemon (knows enough to attempt his voice-over during vLive lol), though. And because Pokemon was broadcast on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 7pm and Doraemon was broadcast on Fridays at 7pm, i speculate that dinner-time TV for elementary-school-aged MiSaMo was less feasible during weekdays compared to during weekends. Also, Sana remembers "Sooooonansu" (Wobbuffet's name and only line) and Satoshi's name, which makes me believe that she does remember the series to an extent, just not the names of Musashi and Kojirō
In Latin America it is also Jessie and James took the names of the USA version, although I do not know if in Spain and Brazil it has the same names or other names
i watched the 1997 to 2002 Pokémon anime in Japanese when i was little. I sporadically watched the ENG dub for AG, Once i was old enough and knew my way around the internet, X&Y came out and I've only exclusively watched Japanese dub ever since. It was much better than English dub, no wait time, more epic openings & endings & soundtracks. whoops went on a tangent
