The manual says to wait 3 hours for the oil level sensor to reset? It looks like you put a lot of oil in a bit randomly and were possibly lucky not to over-fill it and blow an oil seal... it must have been pretty low. Also, it looked like you were topping up a hot engine -- never do that. Park on level ground and wait for the engine to cool and oil to drain down into the sump. Then check level with the dipstick before doing anything else. Unfortunately, the dipstick in this model is really hard to read. I resolved this issue with a full 4 litre oil and filter change. It took 48 hours for the warning to reset and the "oil ok" message to return. There was only 1.5 litres in the sump (and filter) when I drained the old oil so it was actually quite low. I might contact Peugeot and see if they can provide a decent dipstick with a graduated scale on it instead of this stupid, illegible, plumb-bob looking thing. Hope this helps...
He definitely overfilled the engine, the specs for a 308 engine capacity are 4.25 litres including filter for the petrol engine and 3.75 litres including filter for the diesel engine, he potentially overfilled by about 3.5 litres, this video should come with a large warning advising the use of the dipstick prior to adding any oil, the dashboard warning said to check the oil level, not add oil
Mr. Howard I have the same problem with my Citroen DS3 which is basically a Peugeot in disguise. I had the car serviced recently 3 months ago at the main dealers themselves, they put 3.5L of oil according to their service report and the tank capacity is 4.5L. I checked the dipstick seems like there's plenty of oil inside. I bought 5L of 5W-30 and put about 500-700ml, took it for a test drive round trip of around 10 miles but still shows oil level low top up. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated Edit: I just put some more oil about 500ml and start the ignition and the light shows up and gone instantly.
@ReflexCoil I don't add more than 400ml. Sometimes, the warning goes away immediately - other times, it can take a few starts. I guess it depends on how much you've used... I try to do it as soon as I get the warning. Always wait a few cold starts... and best to put the car on a totally level surface before doing anything else. If the warning still doesn't reset, add another 100ml and wait again. Better not to overfill! And to think none of this would be necessary if they just made a decent dipstick that you could actually read.
Really I want to know about warning signal, yesterday I change engine oil but untill now it's showing please top up oil level. Really it's take 48 hours to reset????
Did you ever asked a mechanic about before pouring a ton of oil in it? You're very smart to ad 5 more litters on top of whatever it had in without checking the dipstick first
Exactly. There was a dipstick next to the oil filler. If the error is with the sensor, then a check using the dipstick will verify this. The way it was done risks overfilling with oil, which is just as bad as having insufficient oil because if the oil level is high enough to be touched by the crankshaft as it rotates, the oil can get frothed up, which then gets pumped around the engine providing insufficient lubrication to the critical parts.
BEFORE I TOOK ANY NOTICE OF YET ANOTHER POINTLESS ELECTRONIC FEATURE, ID HAVE LIFTED THE OLD FASHIONED DIP STICK AND CHECKED THE LEVEL MANUALLY - ITS BEEN GOOD ENOUGH FOR OVER 150 YEARS - WHY ON EARTH DOES IT NEED TO BE COMPUTERISED NOW?
Yeah, have the same electronic message all the time...Day after regular Service the message is coming back and i know the oil level is perfect. Please just check the level manually as Andy recommends....its working 150 years !
another possible problem is low oil pressure which would mean the oil pump isn't working properly, unless there is another light for oil pressure, that should be taken into account don't you think? older cars had an actual guage for oil pressure which I would like to see on my modern car.
Before refilling it should be mandatory to check oil level manually to see if the electronic sensor is damaged and how muc oik you really need. Additionally - Cold oil needs some time to go through the engine to the oik tank. Could be that you have 2 litres in the engine room directly after refilling and level in tank is still low. Also the message flag will be mostly deleted only after a total system shut down (2-3 hours of no use of car) . So even if level is ok after refilling the message will only gone after a system shut down or a manual message reset (Garage friendly, the car owner should directly go to a garage for everything)
Oh that's brilliant - thank you for showing this. I topped my up my Peugeot 207cc with oil, this morning, and it is still bleeping saying "top up engine oil level". I have come back in home now and switched off. Probably the oil needs to cool down. Hoefully then, the warning will go away.
the same is happening to my 308. warning sounded so topped up but warning continues. I'll leave it a few hours and try again. dipstick looks fine. fingers crossed it'll be ok
The first I do at least once a week, is check the dipstick before very first start of the engine, or if the engine has been off for more than half an hour. For that warning to come on, would mean total neglect or something is wrong! This is the problem with some or most car owners today, and I have met a few. They don't do any checks and some don't even get the car serviced, unless the car breakdown or fail the MOT. Then they complain how expensive it is to fix. Oh yes I give any car I own, a regular oil change, and if the car has a cambelt, that changed too.
Just wondering if you know anything about the dipstick.. why is it there? any idea.. I guess not as you emptied all 5 liters into your now suffocating poor engine..
This video is totally incorrect and should be ignored. Not least because the oil capacity of a 308 is around 4.25 litres. Adding too much oil can be more damaging than not having enough as the additional pressure created can can blow oil seals etc. Add small amounts and check the dipstick.
Oh my goodness! you added 5 liters of oil to the engine, which even when empty, is not even that 5L. Use that dipstick, jerk! if the dipstick has the right amount of oil, then the problem is elsewhere.
Next time is better to check visually oil level with the dripstick. Overfilling the engine oil level Will also generate the message oil level on dashboard.
Okay, okay, we all saw that the video shows an unacceptable amount of oil being added. But thanks to the comments, we can find out how much to add, how much to wait for the warning message to disappear, so thanks to the caring commenters. If this does not solve, contact the service, it may be a breakdown of the oil sensor or oil pump...
I have peugeot 207 1.6 have same alert message , every time I add only 500 cc new engine oil and leave the message. When I drive about 10 km , the message will gone.
OMG I’m an Aussie girl looking for advice with a shit box oil leaking Peugeot & even I know that’s too much oil & the oil light doesn’t go off until it’s run 4 a bit after topping up! Why are u posting if u have no idea wat ur doing!?
I wonder why you never even touched a dipstick before pouring a ton of oil in the engine? The manual/analog dipstick there is for a reason. The sensor can fail at some point, hence you shouldn't trust it for 100%.
My Peugeot comes up with this: 'oil --' on the steering wheel lcd, but no check oil level on the dash. It has come up with the dash warning before, but only oil -- this time? Any idea what this means?
A picture is worth a thousand words.... You top up the oil with 5L oil... But Totally ignore the DIPSTICK... Surely you should have shown the oil level on the stick before & after adding oil. most engines are about 1ltr from add oil to full... The add oil light is a warning that something is seriously wrong & you need to do something ASAP. You should check your oil using the dipstick at least once per month. I gave you a thumbs down for misinformation. I suggest you remake this video.
What a misleading title! You didnt fix the message, you just toped up the engine which for some unknown reason you left it empty! If you guys have a problem with the top up message and your engine is full of oil (which happens when you have passed the service milage, just turn off the switch (dont turn on the engine), press the reset button for a few seconds, turn back on the switch ,hold the reset button up until the service milage goes to zero and then turn off the switch. Problem fixed.
I personally wouldn't use that cheap shit oil. Peugeot recommends Total quartz ineo Ecs 5w30 and if they recommend it you should be using it. They are the ones who designed the engines and therefore know best
My Vauxhall local shop would not sell me their oil, they told me my Peugeot 207 cc must be the right grade, so I had to go to a Peugeot shop. At least I know it isnt that cheap rubbish then. What would it do the car if we put the cheap stuff or the wrong grade in? Just curious
Actually, that 1.6 engine is a joint design between Ford and Peugeot /citroen. It's an excellent engine when looked after with the right oil & the right schedule. I've had 88.2mpg and it's at 191k miles so far. I always use Total quartz ineo ecs 5w30...every 6 months, regardless of mileage.
Is there anybody here how to fix my problem??? My car show overheating sign and stop the engine...and i just started my car but the sign go to the max level...i open the trunks of the car and its still cool...
What a plonker lol...after watching this "how not to do it" video i put in 1.5l of oil then waited until the morning for the sensor to reset ...now it says oil ok
This car has several problems related to oil. The dipstick is almost unreadable because of its color and the electronic oil sensor does not refresh the meassure instantaniently. You should focus on cover the little hole that is near the minimun on the dipstick. Once this happen the electronic sensor will return an ok level message after the second or third engine start from a completely cool oil situation. i guess this happens because all oil is needed in the carter to take a correct meassure. I think the very high oil consumption is due to this car wastes oil. The oil is wasted throught the top engine junction (valves). Small drops travels down and rear to the bottom of the carter. some of them will be evaporated the other will fall to the metallic plate that protects the plastic cover under the car. (what? a metallic plate to protect a plastic cover? is this a coincidence?. Jesus christ!!!!)
This is the dumbest video about oil level problem solving. You have a dipstick right beside oil filler. . Why didn’t you just check the level but pour 5l of oil in it. 1.6 diesel only take 3.8 l🤬🫣
Too much oil = white dense exhaust smoke while driving. Congratulations on your ideas. Something like that should be removed immediately.

takes upto 6 hours for the sensor to reset. 1 litre is normally plenty to take it back to normal.
After you added oil, take 6 hours to the sensor reset?
With all the respect with the update you've added, this video is misleading instructions and may damage the engine so it better to be removed.
Exactly. There was a dipstick next to the oil filler. If the error is with the sensor, then a check using the dipstick will verify this. 5l if oil.... you are crazy man

The peugeot 3008 dipstick pipe is so tight that it scrapes up all the oil on the way down and leaves it difficult to read
I am having the same problem
This video was a God sent. Was about to head to the mechanic after an oil change

Man !!! How could u put 5 litres in there?? 1 litre it's enough .
If you read the manual you should add 500 ml oil that is 0,5 liter oil. I always wait till it is really on the right level. Never put to much oil.
Oh that's brilliant - thank you for showing this. I topped my up my Peugeot 207cc with oil, this morning, and it is still bleeping saying "top up engine oil level". I have come back in home now and switched off. Probably the oil needs to cool down. Hoefully then, the warning will go away.

thankyouuu

Where was the oil mark on the dip stick, when the digital read out finally worked correctly???
You just put 5 litres of oil into an engine that only has a capacity of 4.25 litres, its a wonder it wasnt coming out of the oil filler cap lol
I can't belive :D 5 liters more... and more, and more... :D Fabio Ferreira takes good information
Just wondering if you know anything about the dipstick.. why is it there? any idea.. I guess not as you emptied all 5 liters into your now suffocating poor engine..

Change the oil level sensor
HELLO mister i have a question about how can change counter oil engine from 20000 to 10000 km and thanks
OMG I’m an Aussie girl looking for advice with a shit box oil leaking Peugeot & even I know that’s too much oil & the oil light doesn’t go off until it’s run 4 a bit after topping up! Why are u posting if u have no idea wat ur doing!?
Sorry to say sometime this type going will mislead others you your dipstick to check engine oil level not by estimate amount

Thank you very much well appreciated 😀 😊 top man
Okay my one the oil pressure come on when i brake and comes off when i drive nicely . So i don't know. Peugeot 308
Dude... remove this video! This is ridiculous! NEVER DO THIS ON YOUR CAR!
My Peugeot comes up with this: 'oil --' on the steering wheel lcd, but no check oil level on the dash. It has come up with the dash warning before, but only oil -- this time? Any idea what this means?
TheOldBill It means there is a fault in the oil level sensor.
The user manual tells all you need to know
I'm gonna ask you one thing & one thin only :
WHAT THE FUCK THE DIPSTICK USED FOR ??????
A picture is worth a thousand words.... You top up the oil with 5L oil... But Totally ignore the DIPSTICK... watsupp man how often do youbtop up your oil
Just use the dip stick!
You should have shown the dipstck

Me too same problem peugeot 308 t7...maybe sensor problem...
Thank you mate it was helpful
Dude you need to wait few minutes 😀
Wtf this video needs taking down it could cost others thousands in engine costs

Is for views! Who fill oil without checking oil level on.... degree failed
Never put the full lot in
I had the same with the coolant level
5ltrs ur mad lol gone check dipstick now omg lol
You probably blew your seal because too much pressure
Ffs made me laugh at some of the comments.
Please don't tell me you are a mechanic😂
Is there anybody here how to fix my problem??? My car show overheating sign and stop the engine...and i just started my car but the sign go to the max level...i open the trunks of the car and its still cool...

errrrrr.....using the oil dipstick might be better
Complete nonsense. Check the dipstick.
5 ltrs of oil ?! 🤣😂🤣
Should be removed .
