Just thinking about why he decided to keep the candy till the end hit me in the feels 😭 (´༎ຶོρ༎ຶོ`)
i think because of Xue Yang's past, in his childhood in the manhua version, he was lied by people and didn't get candy and as a result he lost his finger because he chased the person who promising him a candy.
and maybe he is very grateful or happy because there is XXC who gives him candy every day.

I feel like XY always kinda had a thing for XX but XY just didn’t realize exactly what those emotions were till he befriended XX and then lost him to his death. XY basically lost whatever sanity he had after that because of the fact. Tbh they really both deserved so much better... the one couple that utterly destroyed my heart in The Untamed
That last shot with Xue Yang holding the candy until his very last moment destroys me
Xue Yang and Xiao Xingchen really deserved a better ending. It's so sad that they couldn't be together.

With this edit, you can see that from the start, XY already had a thing for XX. You can also see how much he disliked SL and ruined him and his clan because of this. It has to be jealously, why would he only destroy SL but never tried to attack XX. XY always looks at XX and he always initiates conversation with XX but SL was XX's true friend so he was ignored.
Even though XY had these feelings, he didn't understand them so he dealt with it the best way he could. Even when he had the chance to change, he decided to trap XX in a gentle cage along with a qing and made him kill innocent people unexpectedly because this is the only way he (XY) knows how to feel joy. He wanted to have that life with XX by his side until SL came and he knew everything will change. His desire to kill SL is now his only priority to keep XX in the dark, a qing is too afraid to do anything for these 3 years because even though XX is strong, XY is capable of killing them both with the advantage of his sight.
We also need to give XX some credit for how his story ends. He took the ultimate control by taking his own life, surely he knows the ghost general and now SL is a puppet. He knows without a doubt XY will do the same to him, so he takes his own life and destroys his cognition forever, the price XY has to pay for his insanity and deception.
Now XX is no more, XY is in despair. He is desperate to get XX back. All these years he hid the ying iron but now he makes a ST Amulet to to revive XX only to realise his cognition is beyond repair. Upon hearing WWX is back, he does everything to catch him so he can get him to revive XX but WWX can't revive him so the rage is crazy at this point. LZ and WY are to powerful to subdue so he loses his life while offending them. His story ends so sad for him, SL is no longer a puppet, aqing got her Revenge on him, WWX never revives his love, 8 years to live with the pain of what he's done to XX and most painful of all, XX, who everyone can see who he has obsessively loved in his death for 8 years, had taken his own life and will never come back.
His love was too toxic and he realised it too late. Poor XX.😭

I guess xue yang had history with xiao xingchen but then yang got corrupted and xingchen moved on to song lan and fell in love with him while yang never moved on? idk
Xue yang was a well-known delinquent / criminal who killed many and was pretty much a sociopath, he eventually got caught by Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan. After XY got out of prison he killed the entire clan of SL and blinded him. XX gave up his eyes for SL and traveled on his own afterwards because he and SL had a fight of sorts. XX traveled for a long time on his own until he met another young girl and afterwards a beaten down XY. XX was now blind and XY was horse from his injuries XX did not recognize him. XY was planning to kill XX however, XX fulfilled his one dream and gave XY a home of sorts. So both were companions until SL came back looking for XX and XY killed SL and turn him into a zombie/ puppet. The young girls saw the ordeal and explained everything to XX who was in despair and when he found out that he killed SL of all people he killed himself causing XY to go into a form of depressed Insanity for losing the one thing he cared about.
