- In 1981, Prince embarked on a project to create his first girl group. No, we're not talking about Vanity 6. We're talking about the short-lived girl group that was the prototype for Vanity 6...... The Hookers, consisting of Susan Moonsie, Loreen Moonsie and Jamie Shoop. So how much happened with The Hookers? And why did it fall apart? Watch and find out!

Before Morris Day was a part of The Time, his job was to film everything. I hope the tapes survived Prince's leaky vault.
I hope we get to hear Prince’s demos from this project. I LOVED hearing him sing “Makeup”, “Jealous Girl”, “I Need A Man” & “Money Don’t Grow On Trees” so let’s hear the rest in either another Originals CD or a Super Deluxe album. That would be 🔥
Ya know if we could just get Remastered releases of Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6 I would be pretty happy. Include the videos because these albums are great and never get the respect they deserve.

I'd JUST heard about the Hookers for the first time a few days ago, via Apollonia's podcast on her (with Susan and Brenda!), and they were telling the story of the Hookers. Absolutely fascinating and very Prince-like... then this video shows up in my recommendations the next day, offering more insight. The algorithm occasionally works. Thanks for the info.

Salute to @the violet reality for another dope video. I've heard of The Hooker project as far back as the late 90's/early 2000. I sure hope those demos/early recordings from The Hookers project see the light of day officially. I would hope that the estate reach out to Jamie as well as Susan's sister for approval along with possibly their participation in the release of that material. Personally, I think that those unreleased recordings from The Hooker sessions should be included as part of an future SDE of Vanity 6's self-titled debut album. They were what Vanity 6 became, in more ways. As for the Prince recorded early demo versions of The Hookers as well as Vanity 6 songs, I think the estate should continue to include/sprinkle material on future releases like Originals 2, etc. I hope the estate keep the Originals series going & give us more of that. Let's hope that we get Originals 2 in the future. Peace & B wild y'all 💜😎
I don't recall hearing Prince's demo of Makeup even though I purchased all of the posthumous albums. Gotta go through my archives again I suppose. Thanks for the video

It seems like Vanity 6 grew from the ashes of the Hookers. I would like to hear more from this Album.
Prince also attended Kid Creole & The Coconuts shows in New York in 1981 - confirmed by Caoti Mundi.

An interview i watched this week- “He was holding his curling iron” said Brenda “…and i was sorting his wardrobe (for the controversy tour) hearing me sing he said “you could be the other hooker”…” haha so originally she was a hooker or at least just before he met Vanity anywho

Also that "Bite the beat" was so damn funky with Jesse Johnson wrecking that rhythm guitar. Probably the best track next to Nasty Girl
When will the estate release the version of When Doves Cry with the bass still in??? Should have been in the Purple Rain Deluxe set but instead we got a bunch of radio edits. Who TF wants radio edits???
there is much more than this version...u have in the vault the 1st studio take of the song...much more produced & longer with more...keyboards...guitar parts..vocals & instrumentations...confirmed by McCreary & the alternate demo has been found by Howe himself on tape in the vault!
It was more than the bass that was taken out. It had orchestration and a lot of overdubs. Susan Rogers said it was over produced before he took everything out

If I'm not mistaken, Prince first met Vanity ( Denise Matthews ) when he opened for Rick James in early 1980. She was Rick's girlfriend at the time and undoubtedly one of the reasons why Rick liked to bad-mouth Prince.
Denise “Vanity” said that she met Prince and Rick James in the same night and they both told the paparazzi that she was their wife but she stated herself that she never dated Rick James that’s a good folklore rumor that she was dating Rick James but she didn’t mention Rick and In Rick James book he only mentioned met her at the AMA’s but not that they dated

It’s pretty clear “the hookers” was just a rough draft idea of vanity 6 tbh. The blonde lady had the cigarette just like Brenda so I do believe the idea & characters were the same. I think once vanity was thrown in all he did was cut Susan as the lead singer of the group & made her the 3rd girl like her sister but kept the character the same. Same goes for apollonia I don’t think vanity or apollonia really wanted a music career I think prince kinda sparked that interest for them but to me all there music was just based off the character he gave them tbh.
I pray that the estate will release it

C'mon, it's OK to love Prince and still tell the truth. There was no talent in Vanity 6. Prince was NOT great at finding talent, certainly no idolmaker. More than the lion's share of his proteges and side projects were musically lackluster. For the most part, Prince kept all the great music for himself, while his "vanity" projects were JUST that.

Prince was a baaaaaaaaaad boy, the man not only creates an entire group, played all the instruments, recorded and arranged it all, he starts our with The Hookers, dumps that lead singer, get with Denise Matthews makes her the front woman, then dumps her and gets with Apollonia Kotero and forged her into the group renames it and re recorded the same songs. His gf/lead singer got hotter and hotter with each swapping. ROTFLMAO couldn't make this shit up
