I love this Little Mermaid so much more than the Disney versions, she is unselfish and pure. A beautiful message in her story.
Delicate little Danish soul. She makes me cry.
Thank you for listening, VJ. So glad this story struck a chord for you!
Finally a version that isn't on RUclips kids forcing me to keep RUclips up on the screen to listen!
Glad you’re enjoying the stories, Gideon! 📕 🧜♀️
I love this version of the sea witch so much. She really is just a chill woman vibing at home surrounded by her pets.
Not even malicious, she’s just vibing and wants proper payment for her services.
My girl is living the dream.
Hans Christian Andersen is very loved here in Denmark and I am so happy that the world finally can read his Original stories. Hans Christian Andersen wrote these stories in a time of depression in Denmark. with banktrupcy, lost wars and lost land many danes was very sad these years and Hans Christian saw a lot of that and made them into his stories. His own life was also filled with a lot of sadness and it was first after his death people really began to pay attention and read his stories as they deserve to be read. Beside his stories he made songs aswell and also made the famous christmas heart that still today is sold world wide with very few people knowing they have his design in their homes. He was in many ways like the little mermaid and sometimes still is today.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this. He’s certainly an intriguing individual. I’m surprised there hasn’t been a mainstream movie of his life produced over the years. Perhaps in Denmark?
@@classicaudiobookswithelliot there is some in danish but true they are few. It took Denmark many years to recognise him and for the world even longer which is funny because everywhere if you ask people do you know this story or this song or this poem people always know atleast 1. As an example then Disney's Frozen is also HCA. And it doesn't matter if you ask people in Asia, America, Europa or almost everywere and you could try test this around your friends see how many atleast knows one story but don't mention his name and see how many will tell you they know atleast 1.
Many of his songs were even a surprice by many danes when they discovered they had been singing them for years. Which ironicaly is why Hans Christian Andersen stories in many ways were ahead of their time because its first now people begin to realise, how many of the stories is in all of us every day. In other ways HCA was trying to open up our eyes to see the world from another angle.
The little mermaid had no tears and therefore she suffered more, how many times have everyone been in that situation of their lives when dreams was shattered. But i so agree that a Mainstream Movie about him would be what he would deserve.
200 years after he died he is still getting more populare everyday. His house in Odense still exist and is keep as he lived in it.
@@AH-df3rcI’m from India, but I was glad I knew a lot of his stories both the original and the Disney adaptations. Ofcourse I preferred the Disney version because they were happier while the original works are tragic (in its own beautiful way) but as an adult, having experienced personal struggles, I began to appreciate the original stories even more, little mermaid is one of them ❤
So good to have this man read storys
This was beautifully read. Both relaxing and enchanting. A nice way to spend the morning.

Thank you for listening, Luke ❤️
This voice reading the story makes it even more amazing 😊
That’s very kind of you, Fran. Thanks for listening!
You read it fantastically and brought out the colorful imagery! It takes a lot of effort and patience to nail the intonation and bring the story to life and you did it wonderfully. I appreciate the hard work!
Thanks so much, Greg! 📚
Your voice is how I imagine Hand Christian Andersen would sound like. Amazing! ❤
Praise indeed, Claron. Thanks so much, really appreciate it!
I had this book when I was little, I liked this better than the Disney version
It’s so different, isn’t it? You can understand why Disney took out some of the darker themes. Thanks for listening!
That voice! It somehow helps my mind envision the imagery. A+
Thanks for listening, Atticus. And what a wonderful name! ❤️📚
Absolutely wonderful reading. Would share this to my friends. Huge fan of the Disney version (both the animated and the live-action, especially the songs) but this original just left me broken-hearted. I've never heard such a heartbreaking unrequited love story in my life. 😢
Thank you for the narration. A MASTERFUL.
Thank you so much for the kind words, Rifan. It was a pleasure to narrate! ❤️
I was trying to read The Little Mermaid, halfway I found this video and I thought, "Oh, I'll just listen to it." then fell asleep on it, three times😅
That’s fine by me 😆. So glad you chose to listen ❤️
This was one of the saddest stories Ive known next to the little match girl. I actually teared up, and I don't cry easily. 😢❤
I heard that Han wrote this story because he had romantic feelings for another man that were not returned, and Han was heartbroken. So he wrote a story about a being who loves someone who she can never be with, and the heartbreak that comes with unrequited love and how far someone is willing to go for a chance at love.
Absolutely breath taking! Thank you krystina Marie for sharing with me!
You’re so welcome, Fran. Glad you enjoyed it!
I am absolutely obsessed with the audio classics ❤❤❤❤❤ thank you
Thanks so much for listening, Sherry!
I have to say this is a beautiful but tragic story that made me cry when I read it as a little boy. The story was way too sad to be a children’s story. The ending upset me greatly when I was little and I asked my mother why did the little mermaid have to die, it just wasn’t fair. None of my mother’s answers satisfied me then. I wondered why God didn’t save that little mermaid in the story.
Even today, the ending never fails to bring tears to my eyes. I think it is because I’ve never experienced such pure love in my life. I find the purity of her soul and her pure love so moving. And heart wrenching. The irony is that Prince never even finds out how much that little mermaid sacrificed for his life. I wonder what tragedy Hans Christian went through in his life that made him write such a fatalistic love story. I’d like to think that what separates us from being just base animals is that potential to lift ourselves to be capable of such Divine love.
I literally just discovered this channel. You have a great voice. I loved timed stories for bed.
Thank you for tuning in, Lizzy. So glad you enjoyed this one ❤️
In The Little Mermaid remake of this year I remember Scuttle saying that Ariel had to “kill the prince, no kiss the prince”. Nice little 1837 Easter egg there. Also the quote at the beginning of the movie is a line from the original story. I’m definitely re-watching the remake once it comes on video and keeping an ear on more references.
Absolutely right! Her tragic task is too much for her in the book and she simply washes away with the waves 😢
She isn't washed away, she gains a soul, she turns from immortal to mortal and enters Heaven because of her sacrifice which was out of genuine unselfish love. Her sisters, out of genuine love for her sacrifice their hair, and in turn the little mermaid spares a life out of genuine unselfish love which is why she becomes a "daughter of the air". She rose to the task, and was rewarded with something far better than a marriage. @@classicaudiobookswithelliot
The remake has so many subtle references to the original story. One thing I noticed in the 2023 remake is that Ariel’s tail is distinctive compared to other merfolk. The multicolored, iridescent effect and the way the dorsal fins drapes elegantly as she swims is unlike any other tail in the movie. It’s very apparent the producers of the film wanted to highlight Ariel as the most beautiful mermaid by making her tail the most unique and visually stunning.
In the original story (heard at 30:51), the old mermaid tells the little mermaid that her tail is considered “so beautiful” among merfolk, but it’s seen as “ugly” by humans. This is shown in the remake when Ariel regains her voice and tail. The humans at the party look at her gorgeous tail with fear and repulsion.

Thank you beautiful book my favorite mermaid.❤
I watched the Disney version when I was young and loved it. (still do today). But I do remember getting this book later on and reading the very different ending. I was a little confused to say the least 😄😄. I still love both versions. ❤❤
Thanks for listening, Lola. There’s a definite ring of Shakespearean tragedy to this tale, but it’s beautiful nonetheless ❤️

A great read. A nice audiobook.

I love the original story
Thanks for listening! 🎧
THIS is the version that should be a live action movie. Directed preferably by Tim Burton
That would be phenomenal! Write the screenplay now, Gio 📖
Sofia Coppola was initially set to direct the Little Mermaid, but there were too many disagreements regarding the live action remake. Would've loved to see her version!
There have been many live-action film versions of the original story over the decades.
Thank you so much for sharing my favorite tale!
You’re so welcome, thank you for listening!
Imagine if this were the story Disney told. 😢
Thanks for listening Rin. So many of these classic fairytales are so much more heart-wrenching than their adaptations!
They should've adapted the little match girl, I'd love to see them spin a heartwarming tale out of that one
It would've been a far superior movie.
Hans wrote this tale as a story of heartbreak in his own life of unrequited love. And I love the Disney version because not only did they give the little mermaid her happy ending.... in a way they gave Hans the ending he wishe he has as well. Beautiful in a way.
@Brandon Jackson that one is so sad. Lol they made a short on disney plus. It was a bonus feature on the little mer.aid anniversary DVD.
What a great story.
Thanks for listening, so pleased you enjoyed it!
The alternate ending is ridiculous imo. The real ending, albeit terribly sad, should be honored.
Thanks for listening, Mack!
“Weeping like 👍 a 🐊 crocodile 🐊 yikes 😱 “ and lol ❤😂😂😂😅😅!
I remember reading this book at 6 years old, growing up I always preferred this version over the Disney one. Can’t tell if it’s really good or just nostalgia effect :)
They’re so different, they’re almost entirely separate entities. I love both but there’s no doubt that this version has the heart, the passion and the tragedy that we all know HCA to bring to all of his stories ❤️
You call it 'this version' when it's not a version - it's the original story. Which Disney bastardized. Talk about disrespecting someone else's intellectual property.
I saw a comment that talked about how bad Walt Disney is and said, "he made adaptations of fairy tales that the original author wouldn't like", although, the movie of this book is loved by all and brought Disney back, and I'm pretty sure that Hans Christian Andersen wouldn't have liked the Disney movie based on this story, as it entirely misses the point of it
It’s all artistic interpretation isn’t it. There are so many aspects of the classic fairytales that perhaps belonged in their time, with elements seeming slightly harsher by our own standards today than they would have done when they were first put down on paper. There’s no doubt that HCA was something of a tortured soul and certainly revelled in the obscure and often melancholic aspects of his own stories 📚
As a dane i can say that your picture of HCA is the same way we read his stories. HCA had in many years been in love with a woman he couldn't get and many rumors has also been towards his love life if any is true noone knows. and i agree HCA wouldn't have enjoyed the Disney ending cause he himself never experienced the happy ending. Many of his stories was first really accepted and understood after he died sadly. which also in a ways pictures The little mermaid, the ugly duckling and so many others. But one thing we know is that HCA is always present somewhere in his stories. HCA in many stories was many years ahead of their time which meant people in his own time didn't gave his stories the same worth and in ways that can be said about many time zones aswell until people began to actually read between the lines in his stories then people will discover many more layers to them. He is one of the main reason of why danish people changed as a culture.
Love the voice. So calming
Love narrating these ones. Thanks for listening ❤️
What a soothing choice for a bedtime story! The Little Mermaid is such a timeless tale of love, sacrifice, and transformation. The mermaid’s longing for a soul and the sacrifices she makes are so poignant and moving. It’s always interesting to see how the story differs from the Disney adaptation, especially with its deeper themes of identity and longing for something greater. 🧜♀✨ How do you feel about the original story versus the Disney version?
"...and thought her body was dissolving into foam...". That's how I remember the book ending. I don't remember the part about rising out of the sea or the 300 years...but I remember that mermaids don't have immortal souls. Funny how fragmented my recollection is.

Great reading 🤙
Many thanks, it’s much appreciated ❤️
I have always loved this story, but my friend and I were discussing it recently. And I opined that the Little Mermaid is actually a really selfish character. She has a beautiful home and a loving family, and she leaves them behind when she is only fifteen, and causes them terrible heartache when she leaves them for the world above. Also, she only decides to become a human after she discovers that if the prince falls in love with her, he can make her immortal, so she's using the prince for her own gain. She knows that she will die if he does not love her, yet subjects her family to grief when she does die. The only unselfish acts she commits are saving the prince from drowning and not killing him to save herself, as she realises he should not suffer for her own foolishness.
Hope you enjoyed this reading, and I’m glad it sparked some conversation. That’s what the best novels should do!
Pretty much goes to show how the desire for love can blind you. The "love is blind" saying
@@jaxthewolf4572 I don't actually believe the Little Mermaid loved the prince. She only wanted to become a human after discovering that if the prince loved her, she would become immortal through gaining a soul. So she was simply using him for her own benefit.
@@WolfieMcMuffin I see why you say that as she didn't really know the prince. She just thought he was handsome. So it was superficial attraction at best. I agree that she was thinking mostly of herself and what she wanted. She abandoned everything and everyone for a guy
@@jaxthewolf4572 The sea witch warned her that she would die if the prince did not love her, and the mermaid chose to leave her family and put them through the grief of losing her. She only thought about herself, not the people who loved her.

George R. R. Martin mentions Daenerys Targaryen wearing a dress made of starlight and seafoam which makes me wonder if her character in the books might have an ending more like the little mermaid. Especially if she is the dragon that falls under Euron's spell from the dragon-binding horn.
Question: What do you think Disney got Right or Wrong about The Little Mermaid?
Great question! There’s no doubt that a large element of the little mermaid’s tragedy and heartache was removed to make a slightly more fun story for the kids. But whether that’s a negative or not is up for question. You can’t deny that some of the greatest Disney songs of all time appear in that movie, and it arguably started the “Disney renaissance” which led to Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King et al. HCA was a bit of a tortured soul, no doubt. So perhaps they should have put a disclaimer: “inspired by the work of Hans Christian Andersen” 🤷🏼♂️
@@classicaudiobookswithelliot true it was removed but Disney's decision to do so diminishes the story as whole. You can water these things down and still teach kids an important lesson that can understand.
