This is perhaps the most popular Christmas song in Finland. It is a poem by Zacharias Topelius from 1859. The poem echoes Topelius' own grief: his son Rafael died when he was only one year old in the spring of the year before the poem was written. That's why it is so melancholic. There is a saying: "Finns have two kinds of songs - sad and very sad" 😄
Great reaction, and you are right this song is sad. But man, what a song. Marko, as always, just kills it. His singing is so emotive, and the solo was amazing. All of the musicians just do a fantastic job. Keep rockinbg.
You shouldnt say that this is a sad song knowing nothing about the backstory and that it plays every Christmas in radio and hoselholds in Finland. Not sad but melancholic that gives hope and has a lot of meaning
So, often in a Raskasta Joulua Marko sings Ave Maria with a female singer With Floor Jansen: ruclips.net/video/ut6ufu2CPNg/видео.html With Tarja Turunen: ruclips.net/video/V0_C23wNTAM/видео.html With Elize Ryd: ruclips.net/video/u9DLekO0wY8/видео.html BUT Marko has also done it alone: ruclips.net/video/f_yyRV3l4FI/видео.html Few other Finnish Christmas songs re-done as Raskasta Joulua songs: Raskasta Joulua - Tulkoon joulu ruclips.net/video/2s_QgMCW9ks/видео.html Raskasta Joulua - Heinillä härkien kaukalon ruclips.net/video/CJz1UEyw0MM/видео.html
Wow, thank you for all these recommendations! I don't think I will be able to get all through all these here in Christmas week but I will certainly check them out, thank you so much.
Another reaction suggestion: JP Leppäluoto,. He's the first one singing in the version of Little Drummer Boy that you reacted to. In my opinion he is Finland's best voice. There's a fan-shot video from some years back of him performing a song called "Konstan Joululaulu" ("Konsta's Christmas Carol") that's actually quite good quality, and his performance is incredible.
Hello, next week I will be changing things up and doing a week of history reactions to mini documentaries and such, any recommendations for that?

Finnish christmas songs are really, really sad. Although most finnish songs are. Happiest country in the world has people with dark and sad souls.
You mispelled "melacholy".
