You dont have to go back and remake a classic and black-ify they characters. ITs unoriginal and its blatant marketing ploy to get black audiences and no black people dont like being spoken down to and getting left overs. This is insulting to white people who love the original Ariel the little mermaid and its insulting to black people who get a Token black mermaid that they should feel as their own original princess. It’s disappointing how many people think it’s okay for this cultural appropriation and racism is acceptable to any race , specifically Caucasians. I see a lot of the comments “ oh they’ve done it in the past “, but we are armed with all these lessons and knowledge today with everything learnt from the past and you think it’s still okay for their cultures to be disrespected?. It’s hypocritical !!!. I’ve also come across alot comments where people have noted the villains being white and questioning it and then have people saying it’s “ historically accurate “?. Like how ugly do you have to be to say something like that?.
    I live in Australia , a multicultural country where we don’t get judged or unfriended or bullied on who you vote for/ which side you go for and have been brought up to learn how to respect other peoples cultures and ultimately not steal and appropriate from them. One of the biggest cultures impacted have been our indigenous people. Creating dot art paintings and depicting their Dreamtime stories as an outsider is known for racism especially if your a European in decent , so how the hell is these adaptions getting away with it?. It’s not even the adaptions too, it’s all their movies stealing fairytales and appropriating down to clothing. Example Aladdin was an Chinese fable using Arabic characters which they then all the sudden change their traditional clothing to Indian inspired clothing ?. Like how confusing is that as an Assyrian?. Then you have stories that have been stolen like the German fairytale of the princess and the frog where the story has been completely changed , raceswapped and location along with culture?. I don’t understand why we can’t just make new fairytales that depict culture correctly and are diverse rather than steal, implant and change someone’s else’s culture?. With the little mermaid I would have said to make the actress danish in order to depict a danish fairytale but literally raceswapped her entirely and then insulted the danish and audience but bringing it up as “ we are giving opportunities to other cultures/races “ as if anyone who speaks up about this theft is being racist. I get it’s fiction but it represents cultures and insults them and passes on the wrong messages. If this is acceptable then nobody should have culture they can express.

      Anyone medelled after Ariel would look absolutely ridiculous. She looks like an exaggerated version of an 80's popstar with aggressive fire engine hair, ENORMOUS bangs and just the hair overall is fucking awful. Even worse if the actress was to be as pale as the animated Ariel. It works in an animated film but even attempting it on a real person on anything but photos would look like cheap cosplay. And no Ariel was not that iconic, dear lord. I don't think I heard anyone ever mention Ariel when talking about Disney films for the past ten years before she was suddenly everyone's favourite when a black actress was cast as her. Ariel is based on The Little Mermaid who did not have red hair and no one lost their mind about that and she is actually iconic and has several statues (replicas of the original one in Copenhagen) in different countries over the world. The original was not some obscure fairytale when Disney decided to make an animated feature, it wasn't even the first time it was turned into an animated film.

    Representation is wonderful, but it shouldn't be used as a replacement for good writing.
    If you have good writing, a good story, and you work diversity into that in an organic way, then you have something that ANYONE can enjoy.
    I like to use The Umbrella Academy as an example of how this can be done. You've got 7 main characters, 2 white guys, one Hispanic guy, an Asian guy, a white girl(who is later trans) and a black girl. The Characters have diverse personalities, sexualities, gender identities, and interests. It's very diverse, but the focus is on them trying to stop the apocalypse and dealing with how messed up they are as a family.
    The representation feels organic, it's not shoved down the audiences throat, and it doesn't make the story take backseat.
    It can be done.
    Disney just doesn't care to do it.

  • @theroseofversailles
    @theroseofversailles Год назад +95

    The best way to include diverse representation is to create new stories that reflect it in a positive light. Ariel being black isn’t going to be impactful. Tinker Bell will be left behind in favor of her original white version, just like Ariel. Disney needs to add diversity into their line by not remaking old stories. The stories are CLASSIC for a reason. They might have flaws too, which adds to the charm and impact. Peter Pan has harmful Native American stereotypes but we shouldn’t censor it since it’s important to know that those were the views back in the day. Disney needs to stop pushing their fake woke agenda and start actually caring about diverse voices. It’s not only about race. Where is the neurodivergent representation? When can I get an autistic Disney princess who’s like me? Where’s the diverse body type representation? Disney used to be magical, creating stories that would last for ages, changing many generations and becoming special. I’m tired of the remakes and sequels. I want new stories and new diverse voices. Disney can do it. We got Encanto. We need much more. All races, genders, sexualities, and cultures matter. Give us true representation, Disney.

      I have to be honest: I get tired of hearing the trope that "movies reflect the eras they were made in," as if all movies are docudramas or history lessons. Also, the fact that something is depicted in a fantasy film does not indicate that the filmmakers think it exists that way in real life. Does anyone really believe that 1950s audiences saw "What Makes the Red Man Red" as a serious examination of Native Americans? They didn't - so let's stop insulting their intelligence!
      It's also worth pointing out that PETER PAN creator James Barrie had already portrayed Natives in a stereotypical manner in the source material, so that was his responsibility and Disney shouldn't be scapegoated for it. We also need to appreciate that social attitudes toward Indians DID change between 1900 (around the time Barrie was writing) and 1950. (Among other things, Indians were finally granted U.S. citizenship, and their cultures started to be more seriously studied.) Disney was simply staying true to Barrie's vision, and Barrie was just mining his imagination for exotic whimsy. It was never political.

"We're aware of societal problems like not having fair representation in media" rings hollow when their "solution" is to give those that need representation reheated leftovers of beloved characters and calling it a day. As a result, the changes add nothing and fail at their premise of being inclusive, just turning it into tokenism.
    Also these movies would be garbage whether or not they were virtue signalling for brownie points. Theyre pitiful cashgrabs that only exist to cash in on nostalgia and any remaining good will the general public has left for the company.

    The problem isn't really "wokeness" per se. One need only look at the original "woke" era of moviemaking, the "New Hollywood" of the '70s (a time when, ironically, Disney was remaining stuck in the past). The filmmakers of that generation disdained a lot of things - but by no means all - associated with Classic Hollywood, but at least they created completely original films rather than going back and "fixing" the classic films (KING KONG being the only major remake of that era). Martin Scorsese has even confessed his love for the classics he saw as a child in the 1940s, even though they are in many ways nothing like his own films.

    Ur right about all of this, but it’s unfortunate that they have their own “army” that defends them and are ok with them race swapping, having more wokeness, and following other political agendas as that’s how we’re supposed be like. And as long as it’s affecting white characters only then it’s ok, but God forbid we face swap a Black character cus apparently that’s “racist”.
    I hate this so much and it’s very disappointing to see where Disney is going with this and even more disappointing and upsetting to see people fall for this crap and support it. What’s baffling is how it wasn’t long ago we didn’t care about this at all or at least had the common sense of how things worked around the world. This is more true toward comedy as u can see the difference between now to what was ok in 00s which IMO is still ok and it’s only “not ok” because of how sensitive our generation has become.

    The key thing here is that most studios are not good with execution.
    The concepts had- and have always been FINE for decades. These race swaps are NOTHING new.
    But why the others work is that the end product, the marketing, the story, and so on... They were all executed well. Like what happened with Mario and house of the dragon.
    We were still attacked when we point out the black cast or a american voicing an Italian. But since the end products were well written, well acted, and, over all, Entertaining, all that drama got pushed under the rug.
    People praised the projects, actors thanked the audience for the positive reception. And it was done.
    But since studios like Disney and Warner like to double down, while NOT making sure their quality is AT LEAST good, REALLY shows the inexperience of these people. Regardless of their sex.

    Just like Fox, I wonder what kind of major corporation will buy Disney after their attempts for "being well" with those ones who are of the sectors they made fun before will lead to their downfall since The Black Cauldron. It doesn't help its biggest rivals: Dreamworks and Illumination humiliated them with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Super Mario Bros. Movie (respectively). At least they have villains that acted like real CARTOON villains instead of lovable characters that turned out to be one of them in the end. Or turning female characters into stuck up Mary-Sues.

    When is it ever gonna get through their heads now that movies and shows are literally JUST SUPPOSE BE ENTERTAINMENT TO WATCH?!?!
    Every movie and show in the past all followed that simple rule, something enjoyable to watch. Sure there is an underlying message in them, most are good, some are bad but not bad to the point of it being political or about representation.
    You want a sort of political movie that's good, Pocahontas I think is a good example for this, people in America invading the lands of a tribe to try and drive them out (or kill them) just to try and dig up gold. Now I'm not Historian, but I think the only reason I think Pocahontas gets on a pass on that is because I'm pretty sure an event like that happened in the past where we drove out tribes to try and mine for precious resources that probably isn't even there.
    Hell Red Dead 2 even reinforces that an event like that happened where the tribe you meet in-game had to be driven out by the Americans because the land the tribe inhabited in had oil.
    We don't give a fuck about your political or representational message Disney, just make entertaining shows and movies like you always did in the past.

A few years ago I thought that the remakes where fine but seeing this video and soo many more throughout the years has made me realize how bad these movies truly are. And I will never be okay with people shaming Republicans or conservatives because you Cannot just shame people for their beliefs and I’m sorry if that makes some people mad but I really don’t care about what people think about me or my beliefs because everyone has their own opinion and beliefs about the world. And I also agree that you can’t blame your viewers for what You put into the movie that’s just asking for a loss of interest and money. Eventually Disney is going to go downhill so much that it might end up being just a company that is not going to give you quality content, instead second rate garbage that’s only a cashgrab. But who knows maybe Disney will see their mistakes and make better decisions, or someone will be rich enough to buy Disney and change it for the better.Awesome job on this video you did amazing!

      Ever since I was little I wanted a latina Princess, that Disney took one of mesoamerican's legends and adapt it to a new Disney film, what I didn't want was a handout...to turn Snowwhite or any Princess into latina just because (besides...there are latinas who truly could give a more close look to the character, as we come in many shapes and colors...not mention, the actress is a terrible person, a bully...)

      If you take European culture and blackwash it then it is indeed a bad form of wokeness. If appropriation of other cultures is bad, then don't race-swap European culture. Valid representation would be working with African myths and casting black people for it because it wouldn't make sense with any other ethnicity. This is the representation people need and want. Show us cultures in authentic ways. Nobody would complain if they just did that.

    The problem with the woke is that it is a disrespect of ethnic European culture. Its maybe the feeling black people get when they talk of black culture or any shared history. I like anime but I am not going to demand that they have ethnic Europeans in their animation or as a lead. Maybe at the very least I will conceive my own take on it with inspiration from them.
    That is the main problem. I wonder do the black people feel that way. There are ways to adapt an original into a different setting but it takes great care and attention. Ariel was just altered arbitrarily. It makes no sense. They should have her a bearded lady or a man in the gay relationship just to cement how crazy their woke is; why not make her a drag queen, or a slimy mollusc in slimy love. Make her jabba the hut. There is your funny departure from the canon.

Ariel is characterized by her ethnicity for sure and I didn't like the change either, but I know I would hate an actress who sang badly even more, even if she was white and redheaded
    And the story remains the same, she even remains a redhead in the film, so why pick on her color? let's pick on relevant things like the bad CGI and the animals were really bad

    • @nyrion_
      @nyrion_  Год назад +3

      I've talked about the animals, the bad cgi and dumb choices they're making to the original story in previous videos. No one has a problem with the actress herself, but she was cast in a role that she doesn't fit in and Disney knew damn well what they were doing when they cast her as Ariel, they're the evil ones putting Halle in this situation. But no, she's definitely not the best singer out there (not saying she sings bad). But Disney's lying if they're claiming that they picked her because she sings so good, they picked her because it was their plan to raceswap her from the start, like Hollywood is doing with all white redhead characters nowadays. There are hundreds or even thousands of pretty young white actresses and singers they could have and should have picked, but Disney wanted to virtue signal and check all diversity boxes to get a good ESG rating to receive money from investors (like BlackRock). They don't care about accuracy or the fans, it's all about the money.

    • @2004Aninha
      @2004Aninha Год назад

      @@nyrion_ so name some white and redheaded actress who sings as well as Halle, I honestly don't know. And she's still a redhead in the story, so she just changed her skin color and I can't see how that could be negative since her color doesn't change the story. In addition, I thought that the actress brought a vibe similar to the original Ariel, curiosity, innocence, in short. The point is, Halle fit the role perfectly, she's pretty, she sings well, she acts well, they could have even chosen another black woman in her place but they chose her, that's for a reason. Does she not deserve to receive the role for the simple fact that she is black? I also think it's bad that they keep changing the physical characteristics of the original characters to meet an ideological agenda, I wish this had happened just because of Halle's natural talent and not for financial interest

      It doesnt matter if she looks or sounds great, its supposed to be a live action adaptation of the cartoon classic, and in that regard it's unrecognisable. The movie looks dull and soulless and Ariel doesn't look anything like she should. Disney is culturally appropriating a danish folktale and that's just disrespectful. In addition to the fact that they're only doing that so that they cater to african americans, get a better ESG score, virtue signal and so they're later able to blame all criticism of the movie on racists.
