Really happy to see a review like this , at least one reviewer speaking with the real understanding of the movie . I watched Bosky's review and wondered why these people are criticizing movies without any knowledge of cinema. UV gave satisfaction after a long period in Tamil cinema. Apart from the acting, the theme of the story, immortality is beautifully said by the two stories. Even though people say the 18th century story is boring i loved those scenes for the songs, acting and it reminded us the folk songs in such a marvelous way. The connection between the 2 stories may not be comprehend-able for everyone, but thank u Kamal sir for giving us such a fantastic poetry which we will never ever forget. We don't expect ordinary movies from Kamal sir. We are expecting more..
Kamal's film are always ahead of its time. What is not appreciated now will be celebrated a decade later. It has happened to many of his films in the past. Hope it doesn't happen to Uttama Villian and it enjoys a decent run. Kamal deserves it for all his hard work, dedication and total commitment to the art of film making. He is a celluloid who wants to blend commercial and art cinema in the right mixture to make them watchable. He has been experimenting on these lines for time immemorial and wants the Tamil audience to come out of their obsession with masala flicks to enjoy the experience of a true movie which has a message.
I don't know what many people hate prashant's review but in my opinion this guy is giving the most genuine and realistic reviews about tamil films. And by far this review about uttama villain is the best of him and everything he said on this video is true. GOOD JOB
Yes ! You're right ! Kamal is like a pillar of tamil cinema evolution. Nowadays, people give a lot of support on "normal" films because it's trending ! But true masterpiece of cinema are forget or ignored ! We must support this talent that can encourage some actors, directors, script writers to be more talented. I live in France and Kamal is known for is performance in Hey Ram that is a true masterpiece of tamil cinema created by Kamal himself.
Uttama Villian can be explained in one line. "Kalaignanukku saavu undu anal avanudaiya kalaikku savee kidayadhu" This is what Kamal sir has tried to explain in this 2hrs and 51 minute movie with mortality and immortality stories in parallel tracks. Story writer - Kamal speak these two issues - Mortality and Immortality through characters Manoranjan, Uttaman, Mutharasan ,Iraniyan . It is his intelligent to include Iraniaya Kasipu's play (a demon in our puranic literature who also boast of Mruthanjaya i.e Immortality), which is not possible. That 8'th century position is about to be last movie wanted to direct under Margadarisi in comedy genre. But it has deep meaning . In uttaman's story, the iraniyan play is a plot to kill muthurasan cheatingly. But in story teller's view it could be an addition to show the reality about mortality. The same is displayed in uttaman's advice to Mutharasan. முத்தரசனுக்கு புத்தி சொல்லவே உத்தமன் ,மரணமில்லா வரம் பெற்றது போல் கொக்கரித்த சாக வரத்தின் சோகம் மற்றும் இரணியன் கதையே தேர்ந்தெடுபார் . மரணமில்லா நிலையை சொல்வதற்காகவே , உத்தம வில்லன் திரைபடத்தின் கதாசிரியர் , இரணியன் பாத்திரத்தையும் இந்த கதையில் சேர்த்திருக்கலாம். The scene where Kamal sir opens to his son about his problem was a well-written and well shot scene ever in Tamil cinema in my POV, a perpetual film, K.Balachander sir score equally to Kamal sir of course he is the GURU & SENPAI of Kamal sir know. An art, a poem, a lesson, a classic.

I don't know why did this movie didn't fare well in box office.for me it is so far the best product I have seen in this year. Kamal haasan a man, a hope, a artist, a flirter at the same time a good soul this is what Kamal sir has conveyed through uthama villain in a strong manner I watched the movie only recently through online I'm sorry I had my exams at the time of movies release I wonder again where did this Kamal come from I was astonished by his performance, screenplay and a unique and realistic story if the direction was completely by ramesh then kudos to him also. The acting of balachandar, m.s bhaskar, urvasi, jaya ram and the persons who played the roles of Kamal son wonderful job superb they have made this movie a artistic one the scene in which Kamal speaks with his son for God sake both artists should bag many awards I cried in that scene. Overall uthama villain gave me the best movie experience for me in recent times I again thank this man Kamal for it again, I thanked him for anbe sivam, I thanked him for nayagan, I thanked him for Indian, I thanked him for dasavatharam, hey ram etc and etc and now for uthama villain but only thing I can do was just thank him for keeping tamil cinema alive Kamal the DOCTOR OF TAMIL CINEMA

Watched UV. Yesterday. This movie IS a testament to Kamal the actor. And agreed this is a tribute to KB sir. I (my opinion only) loved the movie. Lots of recent kamal's movie were a let down. This is not. Infact I thought the 18th century portion were quite enjoyable if u understand little ancient Tamil. Here in Australia there were lots of laughs and Lots of tears. Yes there were a few boring parts. The song I thought could have been smaller or montaged. But otherwise it was an enjoyable theater experience. This movie seems to say ... Life is short .... Art live longer.

One of the best performances of Kamal Haasan till date in the role of Manoranjan. Would make you revisit the emotional scenes again and again. Each time you watch, you will notice a new nuance on his performance. A very careful selection of supporting artists-all veterans in their own right. Mr.Bhaskar, KB, Urvashi, K.Viswanath, Kamal's son, Jayaram need special mention and not to forget the director of the movie. A treat to watch.

In a career spanning 50 yrs he made many excellent movies, some controversial ones and maybe a few so so movies... but as an actor he has always been faithful to the characters he immortalized. The roles he tackled are unbelievable. Some are just not possible for other actors because the characters require skill to perform. eg . dancer in salangai oli or Indian thata or Avvai Shanmughi or hell Alavandhan and many more. By far the most gutsy actor in Indian Cinema for a long time. hard to equal let alone beat. Salute to legendary Kamal Haasan.

Spot on. The inadequacies of the inner film can't dilute the excellence of the real story. The scene in which Kamal removes his make-up also reveals the real person to his daughter who seemed to know only of the reel character until then. Brilliant. உத்தம actor.

Kamal's film are always ahead of its time. What is not appreciated now will be celebrated a decade later. It has happened to many of his films in the past. Hope it doesn't happen to Uttama Villian and it enjoys a decent run. Kamal deserves it for all his hard work, dedication and total commitment to the art of film making. He is a celluloid who wants to blend commercial and art cinema in the right mixture to make them watchable. He has been experimenting on these lines for time immemorial and wants the Tamil audience to come out of their obsession with masala flicks to enjoy the experience of a true movie which has a message.
I don't know what many people hate prashant's review but in my opinion this guy is giving the most genuine and realistic reviews about tamil films. And by far this review about uttama villain is the best of him and everything he said on this video is true. GOOD JOB

Yes ! You're right ! Kamal is like a pillar of tamil cinema evolution. Nowadays, people give a lot of support on "normal" films because it's trending ! But true masterpiece of cinema are forget or ignored ! We must support this talent that can encourage some actors, directors, script writers to be more talented. I live in France and Kamal is known for is performance in Hey Ram that is a true masterpiece of tamil cinema created by Kamal himself.

Story writer - Kamal speak these two issues - Mortality and Immortality through characters Manoranjan, Uttaman, Mutharasan ,Iraniyan . It is his intelligent to include Iraniaya Kasipu's play (a demon in our puranic literature who also boast of Mruthanjaya i.e Immortality), which is not possible.
That 8'th century position is about to be last movie wanted to direct under Margadarisi in comedy genre. But it has deep meaning .
In uttaman's story, the iraniyan play is a plot to kill muthurasan cheatingly. But in story teller's view it could be an addition to show the reality about mortality. The same is displayed in uttaman's advice to Mutharasan.

I watched this flick like 04 times, a timeless classic again +1 in Kamal Hassan sir's career, everything about the movie is a gem. The scene where Kamal sir opens to his son about his problem was a well-written and well shot scene ever in Tamil cinema in my POV, a perpetual film, K.Balachander sir score equally to Kamal sir of course he is the GURU & SENPAI of Kamal sir know. An art, a poem, a lesson, a classic.

But it meant to be their (hero-director) last movie and people shldnt forget them... That's why tat portion deal with "immortal" issue... The immortal he tried to show is not be live immortal as captain america... But the intellect n love were immortal... I don't know why did this movie didn't fare well in box office.for me it is so far the best product I have seen in this year. Kamal haasan a man, a hope, a artist, a flirter at the same time a good soul this is what Kamal sir has conveyed through uthama villain in a strong manner I watched the movie only recently through online I'm sorry I had my exams at the time of movies release I wonder again where did this Kamal come from I was astonished by his performance, screenplay and a unique and realistic story if the direction was completely by ramesh then kudos to him also. The acting of balachandar, m.s bhaskar, urvasi, jaya ram and the persons who played the roles of Kamal son wonderful job superb they have made this movie a artistic one the scene in which Kamal speaks with his son for God sake both artists should bag many awards I cried in that scene. Overall uthama villain gave me the best movie experience for me in recent times I again thank this man Kamal for it again, I thanked him for anbe sivam, I thanked him for nayagan, I thanked him for Indian, I thanked him for dasavatharam, hey ram etc and etc and now for uthama villain but only thing I can do was just thank him for keeping tamil cinema alive Kamal the DOCTOR OF TAMIL CINEMA

Each time you watch, you will notice a new nuance on his performance. A very careful selection of supporting artists-all veterans in their own right. Mr.Bhaskar, KB, Urvashi, K.Viswanath, Kamal's son, Jayaram need special mention and not to forget the director of the movie. A treat to watch.

Surprising to hear that the shadow monster scene towards the end of the film as an example of kamal's creativity as I too felt the same when I was watching that scene, that was the ultimate scene in the film. One of the best movie I have ever seen.
In a career spanning 50 yrs he made many excellent movies, some controversial ones and maybe a few so so movies... but as an actor he has always been faithful to the characters he immortalized. The roles he tackled are unbelievable. Some are just not possible for other actors because the characters require skill to perform. eg . dancer in salangai oli or Indian thata or Avvai Shanmughi or hell Alavandhan and many more. By far the most gutsy actor in Indian Cinema for a long time. hard to equal let alone beat. Salute to legendary Kamal Haasan.

You are very straight forward when you tell the areas where it can improve..and the greatness of Kamal..I felt exactly the same way..18th century portions could not be enjoyed with the heaviness of the current story...but I can watch this move 100 times for the greatness of the storyline...

The scene in which Kamal removes his make-up also reveals the real person to his daughter who seemed to know only of the reel character until then. Brilliant.
