One detail: this song is completely gender neutral. And yeah... this is actually a big thing. in Italian everything has a gender. Like, everything, objects too. They wrote it in second person singular and used a lot of figurative speech and they managed to create some truly beautiful lyrics ❤
It is unlikely that the Italian song will be sung in English because the selection for Eurovision takes place through the Sanremo festival where by regulation only Italian songs can participate, however, nice review 😊
They need to sing in Italian in Sanremo, but it's however possible to make an English revamp later. Remember Francesca Michielin in 2016, she revamped partially in English.

I completely agree with an earlier comment here - this is not a "gay love song". It may have missed your radar completely but Blanco happens to be straight. There is a provocative homoerotic tease to the performance, sure (#vote winner) but (and I say this as a gay man) for me this song is two men singing about their respective relationships. Check the official video where Mahmood has his intimate scenes with a completely different male actor, Blanco is seen in the company of a woman with long hair.. The message of the song, more realistically, is that conflicts and pain within relationships are universal, regardless of the orientation of the people involved. As Ryan O'Shaughnessy said, at the end of his performance in 2018 (the one with the gay dancers!), "Love is Love" BTW - TOTALLY love your channel, right up there with my 'go to' Eurovision content every year. Our read on the video is completely different. They start with other people, but seem very distant. They then get on the diamond bikes, leave their previous lovers, and go find each other. The fact that Blanco is straight doesn't factor into it. Ricky Martin did a million straight songs. But now we're rethinking things and maybe we'll do a follow up to discuss whether we were too hasty.

Many do not understand that the Sanremo Festival is not the selection for ESC, but it is a contest that honors the Italian song, and not the singers who may also be little known or old glories of the past. The winner has the opportunity to agree to represent Italy at Eurovision. In 2016 the Stadio won Sanremo but refused to participate in the ESC. The song that participates in the Festival must be unpublished, must be in Italian, must be performed live, must be accompanied by the orchestra. This already makes it clear that it is not produced for ESC, also you can use the autotune, there is no censorship in the text and there is no limit of 3 minutes. BRIVIDI for ESC will have to be modified because it is longer and because it contains an expression that is not allowed; at the ESC you will not be able to count on the presence of the orchestra which gives an important touch to the Sanremo Festival. However it will go to the ESC, this song has already been successful having conquered many hearts, Italian and not. In the many interviews the two singers have repeatedly said that each has expressed his point of view on the difficulty of loving, which is not a dialogue between them.

A great and informative comment but also: the point of art is to provoke emotions and personal interpretations. The artists' intention and idea when creating their art is one thing, the other one is the way their art lives afterwards. All the various interpretations it later inspires with the audience is not something that artists can control or dictate once their creation is out, nor is it something they or their fans should endevour to do.

I fail to see the difference, apart that in the case 1. it is just stating your interpretation ("I think that this song is about X"), and 2. is giving arguments that made you interpret it that way ("I think that this song is about X because A, B, C"). Unless someone expressing their interpretation is being rude and calling all other interpretations stupid and incorrect, and insisting everyone must accept their interpretation as the only valid one for example, all interpretations and the way they are put (with or without arguments) are equally valid. The artists' answers to the repeated questions of the press about the meaning of their art are given in a social and market context that conditions commercial success and reach and acceptance of said art, therefore they should be reasonably treated with caution as to their veracity. But even if what they are saying in the interviews is true, it still doesn't invalidate other interpretations, nor should the artists, or anyone on their behalf, try to dictate the interpretations the individual members of the audience/consumers might have and express. Unfortunately about 30 seconds of Brividi have to be cut to make it fit the three-minute rule. It still works, but the slightly longer Sanremo version is better. I totally agree with what you say: the orchestra plays such an important role at the Sanremo festival and elevates a lot of the songs. I wish this were still the case in Eurovision too.
Why as an American do you almost demand from non-English speaking singers and countries that their songs be offered up to you on a monolingual plate? It’s about time that Americans realised that they are missing out on some great pop music because they refuse to burst the monolingual bubble, which they arrogantly choose to live in.
the problem is that everybody feel like it’s their right to discuss sexual orientations of singers and that their private life is a public matter, not understanding the massage they want to convey with the song not necessary has to relate to it. People act as if in the mv is displaying their actual stories or represent their actual partners instead of actors. The mv is only the representation of the message they want to give. They purposely choose to give to the song a neutral and universal meaning, representing two different relationships but that have the same problems, portraying them as equal. Italy brings quality every year. I'm so pleased they sing in Italian... Italian entries always have poetic lyrics. I think you're making this song "smaller" than it is when saying it's a gay love song: the whole idea of having these two sing it looks more like a way of saying that this is something shared in all relations, no matter the sexual orientation. They are not singing -to- one another, they are sharing one text that could be sang by one person: one is appearing as an openly straight person (and maybe open minded?), the other as mostly homosexual (but potentially open minded?), and they share this feeling of being unable to express their feelings in a relation. No matter if it's a straight, homosexual or any other type of relation. It's universal, and having two persons with different orientations sharing that text does highlight this universality. At least this is my view, and a big part of why I like this song: it is meant to everyone, in all types of relations.
If enough people feel this way we might do a follow up, but it honestly didn't occur to us (despite the singers' vague comments) that this wasn't about a romantic relationship. Mahmood mentions sex. Blanco talks about staining the bed with wine. And they look directly at each other when they sing about how they'd like to give each other the sky. If one of them was a woman, would people even question the meaning?
@@overthinkingit It Yes, this is why I say they are sharing one text, not talking to one another (they aren't answering to one another after all, it's more like one monologue spoken in two voices): this is not about a relation between them (as in representing two guys in a relation), but -about- the relations they had before, and the many times they had this feeling they're talking about in the song. They share one text as if they were one person, so of course they look at one another when sharing this "state of mind". This text could be sung by one person, on its own, it just makes the message stronger to have it shared between two persons of different sexual orientations.

Clearly you're free to interpret the song as one that they sing "to each other" and they don't mind giving that impression when they sing it live, but they didn't write it about each other, and the video makes it rather obvious. Each of them wrote their lines thinking about their own separate relationships.

They are simply to men talking about their fragilities to each other on stage independently from their sexual orientation. Mahmood is gay and Blanco Heterosexual. Your last statement: "I would have preferred this song to be sung in English" disappointed me. Italian is such a beautiful language. Songs in English are always heard on the radio and they all sound the same, which makes them boring. Italy is such an amazing Eurovision country - ever since they re-entered the contest in 2011, there were only two years where they *weren't* in the top 10, and during that time, they won once, came second twice, and third one time. And before they took a break from the contest, they had two songs that made Eurovision history (Nel blu and Insieme) - and I'd bet anything that some of their songs from the last decade will enter Eurovision history as well

I love watching your videos. Your analyses are always spot on. The only thing I disagree with here is your wish for this song to be performed in English. It needs to be in Italian, that's an important part of its beauty and appeal.
Music has to be creative, sometimes shocking, always different ... this is why I like this song, this is why I loved Queen, Bowie, Prince, Dylan.... Now, haven't we had enough electro-pop made in studio by a software? Same rhythm, same simple meaningless lyrics? Italian is a very suitable language for expressing deep feelings, an English version wouldn't have the same impact.
You know... I kinda get where his “I wish this was in English!” is coming from. It would be nice if the song could gain more visibility. With that being said I disagree and admire the fact that Italians always chose the winner of Sanremo to represent them on Eurovision. Personally I was very partial to “Fai rumore” and din’t like Mahmood’s song very much. I like the general idea but overall... this sound... it’s just not my thing. I’m fluent in Italian and honestly I’m not so sure if it’s particularly suitable for expressing deep feelings... surely a fun language to speak with a lot of interesting expressions and challenging grammar but sometimes the metaphors and poetry seem kind of trite and boring.
I think a lot of people are missing the point because they're hung up on the idea that two artists in a romantic duet must be in a relationship with eachother, which is garbage. This is 100% a mlm love song, and yes Blanco is dating a woman. These things are not mutually exclusive.

But they literally ARE singing to each other! From like, as close as they can possibly get while holding microphones! For what it's worth, the American Eurovision host (who is very gay) immediately screamed out "JUST KISS!!" as soon as the song was done.

We think that might just be something they say because there are many countries in the world that air Eurovision but might have a problem with explicitly gay content, so being a little coy about it is a smart move. It really seems like a love song to us.

When I first heard it I thought it is a breakup song. Which well could be. The vulnerability to love make sense though. If you just hear the song without its videos it could be anything not even a gay song.

I think in the face of so much polite and articulate countering of your analysis already, attempting to just re-enforce your opinion will only serve to get people's backs up and actually damage the credibility of your (wonderful) channel. The performance of Mahmood and Blanco at Sanremo was outstanding, but an on-stage chemistry between two performers does not equate to them singing "to" each other. As a gay man I watched the performance. It was stunning, it was incredibly moving and passionate, but did it ping my gaydar? No, absolutely not, regardless of the sexuality of either of the performers. I liked your analysis of how this song plays with different rhythms and melodies. I don't normally like Eurovision's slow songs about romantic woes, but this one is better than most. ...and you're right. It is kind of odd how few Eurovision songs are this explicitly about a same-sex relationship given how many entries are campy, feature LGBTQ performers, or directly depict queer content in their music videos or stage performances.
I think you got this one a bit wrong. They're not necessarily signing at each other and freeing yourself from toxic masculinity is not a theme. Yes vulnerability is a theme, but it might as well have been sung by a woman - the song is completely gender neutral.
Look I know I'm beating a dead horse here but I think if this were a man and woman singing together standing a foot apart and staring into each other's eyes, no one would even question whether there was meant to be romantic tension between them. In 2014 The Common Linnets came in 2nd with "The Calm After the Storm" and nobody suggested those two were just friends.

In the music video they have separate relationships, on stage there is romantic tension between them, and the song is versatile enough that a man and a woman or a woman and a woman could sing it and it would still fit. It seems that lots of commenters here are missing the point when they say that this video is missing the point. The point of art is to provoke emotions and *personal* interpretations. The artists' intention and idea when creating their art is one thing, the other one is the way their art lives afterwards and is perceived and interpreted by the audience. All the various interpretations it later inspires with the audience is not something that artists can control or dictate once their creation is out, nor is it something they or their fans should endevour to do. Mahmood's and Blanco's interviews where they explain what the song is about (because they are being asked about it on every occasion) are not a part of this song, or of its live performance (objectively packed with great stage chemistry between the artists, which gives way to all of these various interpretations), and therefore cannot and should not influence the way each one of us members of the audience interpret it. And even more irrelevant is the real life sexual orientation of the artists, the way they do or don't label themselves, or the gender of people they are or aren't dating. Those fans who try to push all of this to the people who interpret this song as a gay love song, or performance, should be aware that it comes across as highly homophobic and intolerant in a more ample way. Let people enjoy art the way they feel it.
One detail: this song is completely gender neutral. And yeah... this is actually a big thing. in Italian everything has a gender. Like, everything, objects too. They wrote it in second person singular and used a lot of figurative speech and they managed to create some truly beautiful lyrics ❤
It is unlikely that the Italian song will be sung in English because the selection for Eurovision takes place through the Sanremo festival where by regulation only Italian songs can participate, however, nice review 😊

I completely agree with an earlier comment here - this is not a "gay love song". It may have missed your radar completely but Blanco happens to be straight. There is a provocative homoerotic tease to the performance, sure (#vote winner) but (and I say this as a gay man) for me this song is two men singing about their respective relationships. Check the official video where Mahmood has his intimate scenes with a completely different male actor, Blanco is seen in the company of a woman with long hair..
The message of the song, more realistically, is that conflicts and pain within relationships are universal, regardless of the orientation of the people involved. As Ryan O'Shaughnessy said, at the end of his performance in 2018 (the one with the gay dancers!), "Love is Love" BTW - TOTALLY love your channel, right up there with my 'go to' Eurovision content every year. Our read on the video is completely different. They start with other people, but seem very distant. They then get on the diamond bikes, leave their previous lovers, and go find each other. The fact that Blanco is straight doesn't factor into it. Ricky Martin did a million straight songs. But now we're rethinking things and maybe we'll do a follow up to discuss whether we were too hasty.

Many do not understand that the Sanremo Festival is not the selection for ESC, but it is a contest that honors the Italian song, and not the singers who may also be little known or old glories of the past. The winner has the opportunity to agree to represent Italy at Eurovision. In 2016 the Stadio won Sanremo but refused to participate in the ESC. The song that participates in the Festival must be unpublished, must be in Italian, must be performed live, must be accompanied by the orchestra. This already makes it clear that it is not produced for ESC, also you can use the autotune, there is no censorship in the text and there is no limit of 3 minutes. BRIVIDI for ESC will have to be modified because it is longer and because it contains an expression that is not allowed; at the ESC you will not be able to count on the presence of the orchestra which gives an important touch to the Sanremo Festival. However it will go to the ESC, this song has already been successful having conquered many hearts, Italian and not. In the many interviews the two singers have repeatedly said that each has expressed his point of view on the difficulty of loving, which is not a dialogue between them.

I fail to see the difference, apart that in the case 1. it is just stating your interpretation ("I think that this song is about X"), and 2. is giving arguments that made you interpret it that way ("I think that this song is about X because A, B, C"). Unless someone expressing their interpretation is being rude and calling all other interpretations stupid and incorrect, and insisting everyone must accept their interpretation as the only valid one for example, all interpretations and the way they are put (with or without arguments) are equally valid.
The artists' answers to the repeated questions of the press about the meaning of their art are given in a social and market context that conditions commercial success and reach and acceptance of said art, therefore they should be reasonably treated with caution as to their veracity. But even if what they are saying in the interviews is true, it still doesn't invalidate other interpretations, nor should the artists, or anyone on their behalf, try to dictate the interpretations the individual members of the audience/consumers might have and express.
My point being that you're free to interpret the song the way you find most credible, and/or to believe the meaning artists explain in the media, but you cannot insist that other interpretations are incorrect, as there is no one absolute truth when it comes to art, and not even the artist that have created it, and let alone you, just another consumer, have the power to dictate what other people think their art is about.
Unfortunately about 30 seconds of Brividi have to be cut to make it fit the three-minute rule. It still works, but the slightly longer Sanremo version is better.
I totally agree with what you say: the orchestra plays such an important role at the Sanremo festival and elevates a lot of the songs. I wish this were still the case in Eurovision too.

the problem is that everybody feel like it’s their right to discuss sexual orientations of singers and that their private life is a public matter, not understanding the massage they want to convey with the song not necessary has to relate to it. People act as if in the mv is displaying their actual stories or represent their actual partners instead of actors. The mv is only the representation of the message they want to give. They purposely choose to give to the song a neutral and universal meaning, representing two different relationships but that have the same problems, portraying them as equal. The ultimate purpose is to only notice two relationships, and not focusing on who love who. You are all categorizing an artist that always refused any label as if is the most normal things to do. As in the other hand it’s useful to the matter to underline if one has a girlfriend or not. Sexual orientations is not relevant whatsoever here… it shouldn’t been in the equation in a way or in the other: if they are singing to each other and sharing affection it doesn’t mean they are displaying mtml. They are sharing the emotions of the song and of the stage and they are normalizing that even male friends can show their affection to one another

A massage that surprisingly passed really easily in Italy, without any question about their performance or the mv, as it was the most normal things in the world as it should be. I end up saying why we must put people into boxes? Why we need to label everything? If someone feel the need to clarify it, go for it… but in this case what’s the need?
Italy brings quality every year. I'm so pleased they sing in Italian... Italian entries always have poetic lyrics. I think you're making this song "smaller" than it is when saying it's a gay love song: the whole idea of having these two sing it looks more like a way of saying that this is something shared in all relations, no matter the sexual orientation. They are not singing -to- one another, they are sharing one text that could be sang by one person: one is appearing as an openly straight person (and maybe open minded?), the other as mostly homosexual (but potentially open minded?), and they share this feeling of being unable to express their feelings in a relation. No matter if it's a straight, homosexual or any other type of relation. It's universal, and having two persons with different orientations sharing that text does highlight this universality.
At least this is my view, and a big part of why I like this song: it is meant to everyone, in all types of relations.
If enough people feel this way we might do a follow up, but it honestly didn't occur to us (despite the singers' vague comments) that this wasn't about a romantic relationship. Mahmood mentions sex. Blanco talks about staining the bed with wine. And they look directly at each other when they sing about how they'd like to give each other the sky. If one of them was a woman, would people even question the meaning?

This text could be sung by one person, on its own, it just makes the message stronger to have it shared between two persons of different sexual orientations.

Italy is such an amazing Eurovision country - ever since they re-entered the contest in 2011, there were only two years where they *weren't* in the top 10, and during that time, they won once, came second twice, and third one time. And before they took a break from the contest, they had two songs that made Eurovision history (Nel blu and Insieme) - and I'd bet anything that some of their songs from the last decade will enter Eurovision history as well

Personally I was very partial to “Fai rumore” and din’t like Mahmood’s song very much. I like the general idea but overall... this sound... it’s just not my thing.
I’m fluent in Italian and honestly I’m not so sure if it’s particularly suitable for expressing deep feelings... surely a fun language to speak with a lot of interesting expressions and challenging grammar but sometimes the metaphors and poetry seem kind of trite and boring.
I think a lot of people are missing the point because they're hung up on the idea that two artists in a romantic duet must be in a relationship with eachother, which is garbage.

And not only, the same Eurovision was invented by Italy on the model of Festival di Sanremo.
3. We don't sing in english, firt of all, because the rules of the Sanremo contest oblige to sing in italian because Sanremo is the contest of ITALIAN song. The performance of Mahmood and Blanco at Sanremo was outstanding, but an on-stage chemistry between two performers does not equate to them singing "to" each other. As a gay man I watched the performance. It was stunning, it was incredibly moving and passionate, but did it ping my gaydar? No, absolutely not, regardless of the sexuality of either of the performers. I do kind of assume you're straight Matt (that's a damn shame - oops! did I just say that?) and as much as I don't want to come across as hissy or pedantic in any way, I just suspect that your own personal straight version of gaydar might be just a little out of frequency here... Y'know, gay people do tend to know what's gay and what's not...
To concur, I WILL accept there is something of an artistic homo-eroticism here, but I think that plays more to a straight audience than to gay men themselves. I wonder also if there may be a transatlantic divide in perceptions. This performance might cause outrage in Azerbaijan or Belarus but, for the most part, in Western Europe sexuality on television and in social media nowadays is very blurred. It's just not a thing, it's no big deal. Perhaps in the States it might still be a little more unexpected to confront issues of sexuality on prime time TV in front of a family audience? Tell, me, I think we might, just might, still be waiting for the first openly, and visibly, gay contestant on Americavision...
Lastly, If you perhaps think a gay love song in Eurovision is revolutionary, well... can I perhaps suggest you react to the winning song of the contest from 1961. I liked your analysis of how this song plays with different rhythms and melodies. I don't normally like Eurovision's slow songs about romantic woes, but this one is better than most.
...and you're right. It is kind of odd how few Eurovision songs are this explicitly about a same-sex relationship given how many entries are campy, feature LGBTQ performers, or directly depict queer content in their music videos or stage performances.
I think you got this one a bit wrong. They're not necessarily signing at each other and freeing yourself from toxic masculinity is not a theme. Yes vulnerability is a theme, but it might as well have been sung by a woman - the song is completely gender neutral.
Look I know I'm beating a dead horse here but I think if this were a man and woman singing together standing a foot apart and staring into each other's eyes, no one would even question whether there was meant to be romantic tension between them. In 2014 The Common Linnets came in 2nd with "The Calm After the Storm" and nobody suggested those two were just friends.
@@overthinkingit That's true, my point is that there are more ways to interpret the song than just seeing it as a gay love song. In the music video they have separate relationships, on stage there is romantic tension between them, and the song is versatile enough that a man and a woman or a woman and a woman could sing it and it would still fit. Gay love song seems a bit too definite an interpretation for a song that could have so many layers. Also sorry I had not realised this video was a month old didn't mean to bug you about this after such a long time 🙈
@@overthinkingit They never mentioned toxic masculinity though. They sing of love and the feeling of knowing how difficult it is when things don't go as planned. The persistency of love and the pain it causes. You might want to listen to their actual voices describing the song in official interviews instead of attaching themes which are not there.
This video commentary has more to do with cheap leftist talking points about the right than about the song itself. Fascism appears to be voice of the anti-fascists nowadays. There is nothing more fascist than thinking that who disagrees with you is a fascist. By the way, nowadays in Italy most men are actually way less machist and homophobic than you think.

It seems that lots of commenters here are missing the point when they say that this video is missing the point. The point of art is to provoke emotions and *personal* interpretations. The artists' intention and idea when creating their art is one thing, the other one is the way their art lives afterwards and is perceived and interpreted by the audience. All the various interpretations it later inspires with the audience is not something that artists can control or dictate once their creation is out, nor is it something they or their fans should endevour to do. Mahmood's and Blanco's interviews where they explain what the song is about (because they are being asked about it on every occasion) are not a part of this song, or of its live performance (objectively packed with great stage chemistry between the artists, which gives way to all of these various interpretations), and therefore cannot and should not influence the way each one of us members of the audience interpret it. And even more irrelevant is the real life sexual orientation of the artists, the way they do or don't label themselves, or the gender of people they are or aren't dating. Those fans who try to push all of this to the people who interpret this song as a gay love song, or performance, should be aware that it comes across as highly homophobic and intolerant in a more ample way. Let people enjoy art the way they feel it.
