I think I'm not the only one feeling terribly mournful at the passing of the one and only Pete Seeger. Not because it is sad for him or those close to him; he lived a far longer and more fulfilling life than many of us could possibly hope for. But his death is, to me, the end of an era. Mr. Seeger represented an America that is swamped today beneath greed, opportunism, and military adventurism. As a veteran, like Pete Seeger, I long to live in peace beside my countrymen and my foreign neighbours.
Sorry peete seger.but i discovered you 40 years too late...i was 10 years in 68..you where even better than woodie guthrie!! Thanks for the RUclips even they have much crap..😚
It has often amazed me how someone you've only met Casually can have such a Profound Impact on one's Life. My Grandparents were friends with the Seeger's, and several times when I was very young, accompanied them to Beacon. As one with Hearing Problems and an inate Love of Folk Music, my Parents saw No Future for me in the Music Business. Pete sat me down, explained the basics of how Sound worked and encouraged me to not abandon my Love of Music, but to find another Avenue into the Music Business. Decades later I became a Professional Photographer and an Electronic Engineering Technician, and also the Purchaser of Raw Land on which we began our Empire from the Ground up. I also developed my love of Streams and Waterway from my first visit to their house, and know, in looking back, much of my Life's Ambitions evolved directly from my brief encounters with the Seeger Family. We think of them often, and cannot adequately express the Debt owed to them. We can only move the Music and Values forward in hopes that somehow, we can have the Impact on someone else's Life as positively as he had on ours. RIP Pete, and we always remember Toshi's Jahrzeit, as it falls on my Birthday . ..
Paul Donohoe We did really miss something didn't we. You can capture some of the magic, however, in their wonderful album "Precious Friend." Among the many great and wonderfully done songs is "Amazing Grace" with the added bonus of Arlo telling the history of the song, with only slight poetic license. Pete Seeger what a life well lived!
+Mack Lee thanks for that Mack I am going to definitely look for that one And yes As Leonard Cohen sings Mr Seeger now lives on the top floors of the tower of aong
i saw Arlo live two times, it was around the same time, early 1968. One was when he did a show at the Troubadour on the Sunset Strip, great show, did all his songs, which weren't very many then, he only had the one album out but he did an unforgettable long Alice's Restaurant that night. The other time i saw him was at the Ash Grove on Melrose not far from the Troubadour, much smaller venue though, real small. It was a Ramblin Jack Elliot show, he played there a lot, saw him a few times there. So this one night when we went to see Ramblin Jack, Arlo was there for the show, ringside, just came to see the show. Jack invited him to get up and sing some songs, he sang two or three, great treat for us, we played his album to death. After the show, me and my two friends were on the sidewalk in front of the Ash Grove, i think someone else had gone to get the car, or maybe we were just taking our time leaving, things were very loose then. And Arlo came out the front door, by himself. One of my friends, somebody i still know, on Facebook, walked over to him and offered him a joint. Arlo looked like he had seen a ghost, turned on his heel and walked away fast. Jack came out as that was happening and saw everything that happened, and walked up to us and said "don't mind him, he's very paranoid." He was concerned that we would be hurt. i remember it like it was yesterday. Jack was a very warm and friendly guy. He went off to find Arlo. i could understand Arlo being afraid, the police didn't like the way marijuana was so popular at the time, and they especially wanted to get celebrities who smoked weed. Not real long after that Arlo had his hit song, Comin Into Los Angeles, Bringing in a Couple of Ki's, don't Touch my bags if You Please, mister customs Man. For all he knew, my friend was a narc. i was kind of embarrassed when my friend went up to him like that, although it was well intended. I've been listening to Pete Seeger since 1963 when i was 14, loved his songs, he was really good song writer. Great performer. I was so glad we had him around for so long, still performing in his 90s. In fact, i saw a thing on TV about him and saw him using an axe to split logs when he was in his 90s. Good to see that. Today is Bob Dylan's 76 birthday, and he's touring all the time. That is so great to see. To have somebody like that for so much time and hoping for another 20 or more years. Still doing original creative work in the studio. I consider doing the old songbook music by somebody like him who isn't from that era, and brings a whole new experience to the music to be original. I didn't know much about any thing when i first heard Pete in the 60s, musically. i was a kid from the suburbs who listened to nothing but Top 40 radio and as it turned out, some folk music made it onto Top 40 that year, including Pete's We Shall Overcome, and Peter Paul and Mary's two Dylan songs, which got everybody talking about Dylan who we heard wrote more great songs like that and we wanted to hear him really bad, but later that year in December 63 when me and my friend shoplifted the Freewheelin album from Builders Emporium and heard him for the first time, it was clear why Top 40 wasn't playing him. He was the most uncommercial sounding music we ever heard. Ramblin Jack, whenever he would perform a Dylan song back then, he used to introduce the song saying "This is a song by my father and son, Bob Dylan." So many things Pete was involved in. Elizabeth Cotton had a job working in his house, doing house work and if i remember right, that's where she learned to play guitar. There was a guitar laying around and i think she was left handed and she taught herself how to play it upside down, and she developed a great finger style and she composed the song Freight Train which popular commercially successful folk artists covered, and Pete helped her get started as a performer. She was another great song writer.
I saw Pete Seeger when he appeared at McDaniel College with his grandson. I also saw him at Pier 6 in Baltimore when he appeared with Arlo Guthrie. Inspiring, magically, amazing. I miss him. AL
Look at these two, Arlo was a young lad and Pete looked almost as old as he looks now. I think everyone is blessed who has a friend and mentor like Pete Seeger. Thank ya all
LOVED IT SI MUCH THNX MR. STEAD NOTHING COMPARES TO THESE ICONIC SINGERS AND MUSCIANS LOVED IT !!!!!!!!YES INDEED MY FREIND IT JUST AMAZES ME THIS BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY WE CALL LIFE HOW FAST IT GOES ....
I missed Pete when he played in my town a few years before his death. I did see Arlo perform about 15 years ago at a folk festival. What a talented character...
I have told my relatives that I want Arlo's version of Amazing Grace played at my funeral. Hopefully they will find something that resonates with them all. Whenever Pete came to Melbourne, Australia back in the 60's and 70's I had the privilege of going to his concerts! They need more Pete's and his ilk more than ever now!
I think this is from the "Precious Friend" double album, which I first owned as an undergrad, 30 years ago. It's good to hear Arlo again...though at the time my favorite was the older and wiser Pete. God bless us all.
@debbiedamoose the song dates back to the eighteenth century: John Newton the slave ship captain turned abolitionist and preacher. Been around for centuries, but no one (that I've ever heard) sings it quite like Arlo.
I don't view this as a song about religion, I have always seen it as one man's politicisation of at least one of the evils perpetrated by the ruling elite!!!! Long Live,Pete and Arlo, not to mention Woody!!! Great men all.
Rest In Heaven, Pete Seeger. 94 years you benefited Earth.

Grew up with Arlo - finding this feels like finding a beloved cousin 💓❤️

Does anyone recognize where exactly this was? Thanks
I love this song. I love Elvis' version, I love church groups, I love it acapella. This one, though, is my favorite.

How wonderful to perform with a grandchild as Pete has here!

This video is pure gold. Brought tears to my eyes.
I missed Pete when he played in my town a few years before his death. I did see Arlo perform about 15 years ago at a folk festival. What a talented character...
RIP Pete Seeger, You will be missed, but your music will live on.
Thank You Arlo. There is no Singer who is present everey day of my life so as you are.
My inspiration only
deepens with every song the Guthrie family
and Pete blessed us
with! Namaste🏤
Thank you so much, Pete! Arlo, I didn't realize you were so awesome, I'll be checking in.
You go Woody's boy! You do him proud for sure.
Amazing Context ... how sweet it is.
The simplicity of this rendition, guitar and voices, makes it the most moving version that I know

Nobody has ever sung this song like Arlo.

God bless us all.
Thanks for being there at the beginning, Pete...R.I.P
Fortunately, Pete is still with us and still as forceful as ever. A model for us all.
Seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and we will have everything we need.
Arlo at one time ended all his concerts with Amazing Grace. I miss him doing that.
Brings tears to my eyes.
Really surprised that that is late 70s. When Arlo had the TV show in the late 80s he was much older.
Beautiful!
RIP Pete
3:35 - how to wait your turn and then lay down a friggin' mind-blowing banjo solo - 101.
@kinskifreak yep, I just gotta love him! Love this heartfelt rendition.
Amen-brothers and sisters! Amen!!:)

I sent an email. I wish we had a couple of Pete Seeger's today!
@LeeSawyer Pete turned 92 this past week. He's still the same ol' Pete.
I think this might have been at Wolf Trap. I saw them there many times.
@debbiedamoose the song dates back to the eighteenth century: John Newton the slave ship captain turned abolitionist and preacher. Been around for centuries, but no one (that I've ever heard) sings it quite like Arlo.
Arlo grew up to be a pretty dang good musician didn’t he.
After Pete Seeger and Doc Watson can we find anything better??
arlo guthrie was the first grunge singer ever
R.I.P. Love you Pete! Swing that hammer and fix those gates!
