Leah's Story - Spinal Cord Stroke - Children's Specialized Hospital

- Опубликовано: 25 ноя 2018
- An outstanding softball player known for her infectious smile and tenacity on the field, nine-year-old Leah was playing with her sister when she began to experience tingling in her fingers. Rushed to the emergency room, she was later diagnosed with a very rare spinal cord stroke. Only 2% of all strokes originate in the spinal cord and they are almost unheard of in young, healthy children.
Just so incredible that she went from being “profoundly quadriplegic” to walking, playing on the playground, and doing it all with a big smile.
God works in mysterious ways

So glad she’s okay. I just saw a video of a girl with a terminal muscular illness saying she would rather die at home than in the hospital, where she had spent most of her life. Afterwards, I saw a video of a girl with end stage brain cancer die in her mom’s arms. So glad to see a story with a happy ending. And this is NOT an ending - this girl is still alive and getting back to normal.

Since this was published in Nov 2018, l hope their daughter is doing well. The couple's love for each other radiates out to their daughter, that she can do anything. So positive. Beautiful family. Thanks to the staff for their expertise and dedication.
@ALOHAM4RS So awesome!
I hope she has a long, happy and healthy life.
Thank you for sharing. I’ve never knew a spinal cord stroke even existed. God Bless your beautiful family.
The spinal cord is like a mini brain. It can learn stuff and perform a lot of tasks without the brain's help. Just like you can get a stroke in your brain (blockage of blood vessels), you can also get a stroke of the spinal cord. Often times, spinal cord strokes can occur when blood supply is cut off due to an injury or trauma of some sort, which is what I am assuming happened here, due to the fact that she was doing gymnastics when it occurred. Her stroke likely occurred in the cervical (neck) region of her spine, due to the fact that she had difficulty moving both her arms and her legs. The amazing thing about spinal cord injuries such as spinal cord strokes, bruising, swelling, and incomplete spinal cord injuries (where the spinal cord is not completely damaged, as opposed to a complete spinal cord injury), is that full or almost full recovery is very possible!!! I have a friend who had an incomplete spinal cord injury (paraplegic... from the waist down), and he is walking and running again and has two beautiful children!!! I am always amazed at the success of recovery for people with brain and spinal cord injuries. The brain and the spinal cord are amazing, and there are so many new discoveries being made today in the realm of neuroscience!!! That is why I want to become a physical therapist specializing in neuro PT!!!

@@keatondauffing1166 Very informative and did you become a physical therapist?
@@rodrickheffley3522 Lol.
@@yougotaluvme I'm on the road to it!!! it's a long degree!!! Lol.
Strong child, strong parents. God bless this beautiful family.
Omg I love the moment she started talking and seeing her pretty face
Dad had a beautiful smile while speaking of her daughter recovery❤
So wonderful she is on the road to recovery.
I hope your daughter has continued to do well. She clearly has two wonderful parents. My 14 year old daughter just went through brain surgery in the last month, so I know how challenging these times are. But children are resilient and they can achieve great things with the right medical care and parental support!
God bless this little girl and God bless her parents and family
What a scary experience! She definitely looked like she was progressing well, though. I hope she’s doing well today!

God bless this family! We love you, Leah!♡
What an amazingly strong willed young lady, you inspire me to keep pushing girl.
Our 13 year old son also had a spinal cord stroke only 5 months ago. He to was a talented athlete. It is a great mind set to have to take into the rehab and recovery from such an enormous injury as a spinal cord stroke. Austins was T2-T12. He is now walking and starting to get back into sport. All the best to Leah with her ongoing recovery.
I’ve never heard of a spinal stroke. Thanks for sharing your story. Continued Blessings for her and your family!

leah your amazing keep it up the good work!
She has such an amazing spirit, it takes an extremely strong person to be able to smile and laugh and keep your spirits up when something this tragic happens. You two are amazing parents. My childhood was spent in and out of hospitals from a super rare kidney/liver disease. I had to undergo 3 kidney transplants and 1 liver transplant. There were times after surgeries or on dialysis in between the transplants that I wanted it to just be over, My parents were a huge support system for me and I think if I wouldn't of had such amazing supportive parents I don't think I could've gotten through it. Leah is very lucky to have you two, I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers. :-)

I have had 2 Strokes one was when I was 6months old and it was on my left side of my Brain and then I had a another Stroke when I was 13years old and it was on left side of my Brain and it made me blind in my right eye and made me have Seizures/Epilepsy
So sorry to hear that my friend had a grand mal seizure infront of me in high school and that was scary at the time that it happened wasn't sure about what seizures were but as a certified clinical medical assistant i know what seizures are
Sorry you had to go through that but remember, concentrate on what you have, not what you could have. Made me a lot happier
Hi Meagan Moore, sorry to hear that you can 2 Strokes, I will pray for you, I know what it is like to live with an illness that overtakes your life, But Jesus gave me a miracle and healed me, Jesus loves you and can do the same for you, Ask Him into your heart your heart to be your personal Lord and Saviour, and He will change your life for the better, God bless
Meaghan, I'm sorry, I hope you are doing better each day goes by
When I was 14 I had these headaches in the back of the head and it took away my ability to walk. This went on for 8 months nonstop.
Wow how awesome is her recovery PRAISE GOD
This s not because of that bastard called god... It s thanks to The doctors...
God bless you all
Big hugs hugs hugs
Thank you God x
So glad this had a happy ending! When they said she was quadriplegic! I was shocked! Did they ever find out what caused her stroke? Was it the gymnastics? A hard landing? A shock to the sinal cord?
