When I was working before retirement, when someone at work was thrown under the bus by the boss or another employee, this song would always play in my head. When nobody of importance was around, I would pull it up and play for everyone at work. Always loved this song.
The first record I ever got was Alice Cooper No More Mr Nice Guy at the Rochester Woolworth’s 99cent 45 rack with my mom in 1973. She had no idea.
And yet I never heard of Mr. Beast until I saw your video.
I didn't know who Mr Beast was either, I don't follow RUclips 'personalities', I had to look him up.
lol… Same here
He makes kids content, most adults don’t know him.
For real.
He's a creepy weirdo who abuses his employees
Gamble & Huff and McFadden & Whitehead. Classic Philly sound,
One of their very best. Love Train too...Rick is way ahead of me on figuring it out...wow! Rick, you da man!
Last week Summer Breeze, this week Backstabbers. Two killer songs. Love this Rick.
I loved "Back Stabbers!" Every time I hear it, (rare now of course) I remember a certain summer afternoon helping my brother wash his car so we could go on the cruise that night and It was playing on the radio!
I miss the What Makes This Song Great? series where you analyze all the elements (drums, groove, production, vocals, etc.). Watching you plot out the chords can get a bit tedious, although it's still nice to see classic songs like this get some love.
"The Long And Winding Road" also has a beautiful Ab/Bb, just before "that leads to your door".
This is probably my favorite ballad, top five Beatle's song, too. I call it: "Minor yearning/Major revelation" all within one chorus!!
I didnt recognize the song title Backstabbers......but as soon as I heard the lines "What they do?" and "They smile in your face" line I recognized the song from hearing it on the radio back in the seventies.
I immediately recognized it because "Backstabbers" was the first song I heard as a child that lodged itself into my brain. I was around 6 when this was a hit, and I remember riding in the backseat of my mom's car and hearing it on the radio. I was excited every time it came on. For some reason, my 6-year-old brain was fascinated by it - I consider it my first favorite song.
And, yeah, the "What they do?" line is instantly recognizable. 😊
I got my first big collection of 45s at a garage sale in the early 70s. Tom Jones with a frog on the label doing what's new pussycat, an apple Beatles 45 of Come Together, at just 5 years old, I didn't know who the Beatles were but I remember feeling like a gut punch when I was told that they had already been broken up for a few years. There were a bunch of rock classics I was too young to really appreciate, but I remember getting the Beatles right away thinking, this music makes me FEEL something, like it was interesting and had a kind of euphoria about it. We Can Work It Out was one of those 45s. So optimistic and spiritually uplifting for a lil dude in kindergarten listening to 45s on his dad's old fold-out record player case! He had long sinse graduated to reel to reel tapes, and then the modern stereo system by the early 70s.
Back Stabbers, Love Train, Used to be My Girl. They were freaking great.
As a kid in the sixties I remember Woolworth stores and later they rebranded to Woolco Stores in Canadian cities. There were 160 of them in Canada when woolworth/woolco dissolved in 1983. The Woolco stores survived another 11 years in Canada before being bought out by Walmart in 1994. During the seventies and eighties the Woolco stores in Canada would hold these monthly $1.44 days....where they would put items on sale for $1.44. Competitor stores Eatons and Woodwards followed suit and the first monday of each month would hold $1.49 days. Most stores in Canada had an in-store restaurant section. These restaurants were named Red Grille or Strawberry Street Cafeteria, except in the province of Quebec where they were named Café Rouge or Moisson d'Or.
I can’t eat I can’t sleep any more… waiting for you to walk in the door and I wish I didn’t miss you any more…
Angie Stone, what a voice. Loved what she did with the sample from this.
My favorite Angie Stone song ever 😍. Wonder how many times I've played it 🥰…
This was great... I have listened to this songs for 50 years and never thought to analyse it. I just checked the liner notes for the Backstabbers LP and did not realise it was the Salsoul guys playing guitar, drums et al.. always loved Bobby Eli, Vince Montana, Earl Young... great players bringing a tinge of jazz and latin into soul.... a really great era for music.
If only the 70s never ended!
I think you could throw the 80s in there as well
The 70's sucked. So did the 80's. Look at the numbers - they were horrible. What you miss is being young. There is a lot of great music being made now - it just isn't in the POP channels. You HAVE to dig around online. Check out what our kids ad grand-kids are listening to. Start with Yoko Kano and the music from Cowboy BeBop.
As I listened to this song, I turned into a 1970's television show plainclothes cop with a mustache and hair parted in the middle, driving my gold-brown Buick along a mostly-empty freeway in the California winter sunshine, going over a bridge with the view of the city, on my way to meet my partner inside a darkened local bar to get more info on the drug smuggler we've been looking for, knowing that the girl I've fallen for has betrayed us and has been passing information on to the bad guys. I light up a cigarette and hold it out the window as this music plays.
My fav O'Jays tune, Philly Sound at tits best!
Man, I never thought you would review this awesome song from my youth!!!
One of the songs and arrangements that I have always considered among the greatest. Very classy and never tired of listening to it.
Hey Rick! Have you ever done anything on the Peanuts Christmas album by The Vince Guraldi Trio. Will always be #1 Xmas album to me
It was such a great tune to hear on the car radio. That whole era was full of hits like this.
YESSS Enough grunge Rick! PLEASE Interview the Funk veterans!! bassists, guitarists, producers!!!
I can imagine hearing this old classic in a Quentin Tarantino movie. 🤩
When you said early ‘70s O’Jays “funky” and “genius” I thought you were going to pick “For the Love of Money” which is an absolutely unique, well-produced song that still sounds contemporary.
Rick, I'm 61 and enjoy watching your videos. Never played guitar. I think about purchasing your programs. Is it too late to learn guitar? I played flute in the mid 70s and still enjoy music.
Ricks face listening to the song made me smile you can see how much he loves that tune 🙂
Great Song ....produced by Gamble and Huff.. ..they produced a lot of great songs . THEY wrote the THEME song to SOUL TRAIN THE HIT TV SHOW . Two of the 3 writers on Backstabbers .Wrote the hit AINT NO STOPPIN US NOW .. which was big in 1979...MCFADDEN AND WHITEHEAD are their names. Leon Huff was the 3rd writer on BACKSTABBERS. .Allegedly they used a DRUM MACHINE on the track the Drumulator .OH yeah we knew exactly what they where talking about lyrically. Great dissect still !!!!!!!!!
First record I ever bought was the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 with soloist Sviatislav Richter and conductor Kurt Sanderling.
My mother loved that record!
,THe first time I heard it, I thought "hey, just a minute, that's ripping off Eric Carmen". Then it hit me...
Such a well constructed groove
It wasn't creepy until 1994, LOL! 😆 A certain dude in a bronco made sure of that. But yeah, this song is an underrated gem. There's an episode of Daryl's House where he sings this with the O'Jays. Awesome jam.
Great song, still holds up the test of time
Daryl Hall does this live on his Daryl's House channel.... a few years back.
The O'JAYS did it live at Daryl's house, with Daryl playing along.
By far the greatest Live from Daryl's House episode, the O'Jays are beyond perfection, and they have the greatest time with Daryl, who is a true fan of theirs.
@@dannoplane - Yes, but it is Daryl's band and gig. O'Jays were the guest that session, so of course they played the O'Jays classics.
Love this song. I saw Elvis Costello in 82.. and he opened up the show with this gem!
Ha ha - I figured out Backstabbers about 2 years ago after it randomly popped into my head one day. Great song! I really appreciate you taking the time to go through it Rick!
Good take of this song, in a slightly older iteration of the O'Jays, on Live from Daryl's House. Killer soulful ending.
In my eyes the best soul group of all time started 1958. Changed their name to the O’Jays in respect to Eddie O’Jay. The rest is history as they say. But a big mention should go to Gamble and Huff and the guys at Sigma Studios. MFSB.✊️👊❤🎉
First record was “In the summertime”, Mungo Jerry - I was four (and some, fall of 1970) and had heard it numerous times on the radio.
And no, I couldn’t possibly buy it myself, just “Mooom…?!” She gave in, and went.
Saw a recent interview with mr. Dorset, what a guy - all those things I didn’t know!
My deepest gratitude, as that record pushed me into a musician & recording engineer career. I HAD to figure out that “silly” unique production…😅
I was a young teen Prog rocker, but I liked the odd interesting pop record, and this was one of them. Love Train was pretty good O'Jays track off the same album (?) too. Tbh, I think I occasionally liked a lot of things except straight middle of the road Pop.
Love this. I remember discovering chords like these on piano but never could figure out where to go with them. Reminds me of Midnight on the Oasis.
Woolworths or Woolies is a major supermarket here in Australia
Firstly, I am British, even though I now live in France, and I remember Woolworths. Long gone from the UK, I am afraid. I also bought records there, being that I am the same age as you. I also remember that song, too.
Heavy Blaxploitation soundtrack/Marvin Gaye vibes on this song. I fully remember this song from my KTel records compilation I bought in the 70's
What a great song. Glad you covered it. Very interesting to hear how you broke it down.
I haven't heard this since the 70s either. Having listened to it with a fresh perspective, I desperately want Carlos Santana to cover this and do what he does best. A tasty lead break. He covered "She's Not There" by the Zombies, among other songs, and killed it.
. . Thank you for being a teacher and supporter of real music and pointing out the amount of imitation computer made music. . . 😎
Bought 'Can't Buy A Thrill' by Steely Dan when it came out at a Woolworth when I worked there.
This song's an example of why I love Motown
I knew it was gonna be Backstabber before he said it!! lol
Love Backstabbers. So catchy.
I played in Micheal Monarchs band from Steppenwolf and he plays everything in Alternative tunings. It's why Born to be Wild and Magic Carpet Ride are so clean sounding. Cool huh?
Midnight at the Oasis starts with 11th chords. Another 70s song with a sophisticated chord progression.
Eddie Levert. Sr was the lead singer...of The O'Jays.
In our hood... the record barn was where I got my 45s...$1.07 TX incl.
Kmart is where I bought my first records in 1974
My first 45 was Venus by the Shocking Blue...
I bought my first 45s in a local place that sold radio gear and other electronics. No specialised record stores in 1967 in my town.
Rick… have you ever analyzed some of Rundgren’s more obscure, interesting comps? Some really interesting chord progressions. Didn’t become a fan til I hit 60 lol! 😅
Rick, you're the uncle I wish I had
great value on the bundle deal ☝️
When it comes to motown...gotta incl rare earth...💯
Rick - You're missing the the key element of the song - you're getting distracted by the theory! - you are right as rain about the Latin groove and the descending chord structure: however, just sing along with the song. As soon as you sing "What they do" you are helplessly locked into the addictive groove. The Lyric takes you down the rabbit hole and into the music.
I liked that lil fluff at 14:17 .. intro liken to bunglaow bill..lol
I was about 15 when the song came out and was just beginning my guitar journey. I was soaking up everything I heard and trying to make musical sense out of it with little knowledge of theory. This song reminds me of Hill Street Blues for some reason.
I totally remember this song.
Canada had Woolworths, I think it turned in Woolco? The place for records was Sam the Record Man. Iconic record store in Canada.
Busstop, the Hollies. Still magic.
"Is Prince a RUclipsr?" LOL! The artist formally known... Hey Rick, you ought to play the "Backstabers" cover The Rippingtons Did for the audience. Jimmy Johnson plays an incredible bassline on that track. It sounds to me like a full-on funk bass without the slapping. Love the original too!
I remember the song as good driving music on the ol' AM radio...
TUNE ... ! Yes those G7+ hits create SO much drama and tension ... check out the fat tom fills in those breaks! Massive!
I'm glad your family is no longer gaslighting you about whether songs are in tune or not, now you seem to live in the same slice of the metaverse where Prince Did exist.
Woolworth: the Albany NY store became Drome Sound, where my parents bought me my first electric in 93, a jewel blue Ibanez RG470. Still my main guitar.
I need to get your Beato Course Bundle!
We used to have Woolworths in the UK 🇬🇧
They closed in the early 1980’s.
I remember that song.
I’m 64
May the Force
be with you.🌀
Jim🇬🇧
(-: :-)
That was known as The Philadelphia Sound!
Our Woolworths turned into a Kmart
Sounds like inspiration for Silk Sonic!
Lovely music.
NICE PICK Rick! 👍🏽
Yes!
3:52 Speaking of Swervedriver, is there any chance of some WMTSGs or Top 20s for the Shoegaze genre, please?
The Dorian vamp in the end!!
Please give props to Thom Bell who was the arranger
I already own 4 of the courses, I would like to get the arpeggio course. Do I need to purchase this bundle to get it?
Sounds like it should be playing over the credits of a blaxploitation movie.
ELO, "fire on high"
The next gen are straight away sleepwalking if they’re not familiar with any music by “the artist formerly known as Prince” or “Prince.”
Rick's first chord was Allan Holdsworth, UK "Nevermore", the second chord????
Ive Never heard of Mr Beast !
Yep had Woolworths or ‘woolies’ here in the uk
Always in there for records our local one also used to have a rack of ex chart singles that they sold at discount so always rummaging around for bargains.
I bought the candy man can. At Grants department store
Unfortunately Woolworths closed down completely in the UK 15 years ago..
weirdly enough we still have them in Germany
And this one sounds similar to Tavares' It Only Takes a Minute
You are so cool!
Great song some people on this earth are that way do anything to get ahead especially today’s artists there music is not good at all no musicianship
We had Woolworths in he UK up until 2009. They also sold the top 40 singles. Was Woolworths called “Woolies” in the US too?
Wait - verse, chorus, pre chorus… why are we calling the wrong parts the wrong names? “They smile in your face…”= chorus
“I keep getting all these visits…” = verse
“Leave alone what’s tight in their fist”.. = pre chorus (or just the second half of the verse)
🧐🤨🫨
Why don't you call Gm/Bb a Bb6 chord? Is there a difference?
Woolco!
Hey Rick
How bout
Mac McAnally?
how about Top 20 60s 70s r&b rhythm guitar songs?
I just replied to the MrBeast comment lol. First time I wasn't too late (: It's kinda far down but I basically just told Jimmy It's ok he hasn't heard of or listened to Prince until now but now he can
It says there's another comment on this VOD but it's not showing (Am I the first comment on a Beato VOD???!!!). Great stream Rick; I hadn't heard that song before but it was really cool and I'll add it to my playlists on Spotify. Merry Christmas!!!
