@The1ReturnerI know you get angry with this because it might be annoying that everyone ls commenting something funny Doesnt meen you got to hate on them, they like making jokes and making peoples days brighter. You probably heard the phrase "Laughing Is the best Medicince" Because it can be a medicine, Laughter sometimes can obviously make you feel more happy about something. Plus you really do not need to call out people who just like to joke around, Without small jokers like them We would be living in an oppressed society, With Suicide rates being pretty high because nobody smiles about anything because nobody jokes around depression rates would increase, Maybe I whent a little to hard on the last bit, but you should respect people more because the little things can make a big difference
i appreciate the effort, but one thing that could be done to vastly improve its usefulness would be to add a brightly coloured belt or some other way to highlight the motion of the hips. as is, the black shirt on black pants makes it a bit tough to catch the subtleties of the hip movement. (yes, i realize i am writing this comment almost 12 years later)
I really like the exageration. it gives you everything you need. I think that if you cant figure out what a lesser version of it would be from this video then you don't belong in whatever job you are using this for Thank you very much endless reference. you've been a huge help to a struggling college student.
In my opinion it would be much easier to exaggerate a normal walk than to make a normal walk out of an exaggerated one. All the other standard walks from this channel ARE normal walks except this guy, so I think ApricotMilk is correct.
hey guys! can anybody please let me know the the gait cycle phases(like heel strike, mid-swing etc) of both the legs in the following numbers: +15, +18, +71, +82, +100, +135 it would be of great help. thanks.
I kind of wish people would stop replying to this ancient comment, but okay. Indeed, if you are drawing a cartoon, it, generally, is perfectly acceptable to use overly exaggerated movements like these. However, for 3D animation, or even stop motion/Claymation you are advised to use much more subtle movements when animating walk/run cycles, gestures, facial expressions, etc. You only use motion capture if you require 1:1 accuracy, like in a film or video game.
They're supposed to be. For a lot of reasons, but mainly because animations just don't end up looking right when you use "realistic" references. The only way to achieve it without difficulty is to use mo-cap.
Not necessarily. It depends on what kind of animation you are creating. For 3D animation, overly exaggerated movements don't always translate well. Subtlety is often key.
nah more like he does sports and is in shape and good poster but most people dont do good poster so would like to see both thank you people dont relise how much we need real info for are animations and 2d drawling filming this helps a lot thank you.
I wouldn't call this unnatural. The man is real. He's walking the way he walked -- that time. I would welcome this sequence in my aniblocks as one of many walks. But I know what people mean about toning it down. I cherish plain walks now because almost all walks are exaggerated. In movies, you rarely need a tantrum or a drunk walk. You need walks. Man would I love a 1000 BVH files of people sitting around doing nothing. watching TV. Listening. Talking, but not like a mime imitating talking
who take strides like this. bla very good for general ref but could we get more relaxed normal walks? playing at full speed he looks like he is almost hopping. keep up the good work :)
In order to do a realistic animation and get the feel of it right you need to exaggerate the movements anyway or it will look too stiff and robotic. If you try to do an animation with absolute no exaggeration it will look off, like the Japanese robot wives (search it, it's creepy). Looks almost close to real but something is off about it. Also, this is just REFERENCE regarding how an athletic man walks, it's up to the animator to decide some changes in order to get the right walk for your character. In my opinion this walk is great
Different styles I guess. I didn't know your comment was a year old haha. I've just been watching reference videos all week for work and I though I'd add my 2 cents. I mainly follow pixar for 3d animations and they're always pretty exaggerated. But I do what you mean if you were to animate something close to a miyazaki film.

@umar6419 Thanks for your feed back - I have also just started facebook page for Endless Reference, you will find some more low res examples on there - If you would like visit us there and become a fan and I'll make sure I include some real time footage :-)
3D animation should not be treated differently than 2D animation in regards to style, appeal and exaggeration. Too many 3D animators go too subtle and make uninteresting work. Just look at the exaggeration in Tangled and especially Hotel Transylvania.
Came here to learn how to walk like a human, got this.
and realized only god is too good for weight painting
Thanks to this tutorial, I can finally walk normally like a pro
just reading the names of them, you can recognize their ignorance, they are people that doesnt read titles and want attention

Even after 13 years, you still help people
YES IT IS. it's exaggerated, but it makes it so much easier to animate the extreme arm movements and it makes it easier to see how the frames change.
thank you so much for this
nice :D
OMG I WATCH YOUR TOTURALS YOURE AMAZING
I didn't expect you here sensei
Sensei❤
this is the best walk reference of all time
i honestly like how exagerrated it is, it helps my animations look more lively and thats what i needed, tysm
Thank you for your feedback! this one definitely gets mixed reviews, but I do love hearing all perspectives!
Sure, It's a bit exaggerated, but It's still extremely useful.
Appreciate the feedback 🙏🏻 Cheers!
This is what I call the confident bro walk.
Turns out it's just what I needed for my animation project XD
This is perfect for animating. I will thank "endlessreference" in the credits if I use this resource. Thanks for posting.
Your channel is a life saver
Using it for blender, thx a lot
You're welcome!
This is not unnatural. Its like another walk cycle with its own style. It helped me.
This must be the reference used for Morrowind
@umar6419 here are tones of clips available in real time on our website
Cheers!
These movements are too exaggerated, obviously deliberate. No one moves like this naturally.
Good, needed this for trying to animate how a robot might walk.
Good video with the grid to make it easy to follow his walk

I like his walk. It has character.

although his gate is a little wide and awkward to watch, great arm swing and helpful video

Animation Reference - Athletic Male Standard Walk (WITH SWAG)
In my opinion it would be much easier to exaggerate a normal walk than to make a normal walk out of an exaggerated one. All the other standard walks from this channel ARE normal walks except this guy, so I think ApricotMilk is correct.

I'd appreciate if he was wearing a striped suit instead of black, or something that makes small body shifts more noticeable.
+Carnie Vorex he is afraid of the fashion police :
+Carnie Vorex for sure, we have had a lot of comments regarding colour tone of clothing, will take all feedback on board - cheers heaps!
Not necessarily. It depends on what kind of animation you are creating. For 3D animation, overly exaggerated movements don't always translate well. Subtlety is often key.
If you don't like it, take artistic license to change it in your animation. To me, it's not bad, but his strut makes Beegees play in my head.
muchisimas gracias me salvaste con mi examen de animacion!!

three quarters going forward and back would be gold
please tell me the the counter at the middle of the perspective and front views is the frame count and change my life for good
My humble honest opinion : "No one walks like this."

so in order to make a realistic animation, you take data points from the real world, and modify them. Seems legit...
You mean one of the 12 principles, that's right, but for video games it's different, for example.
actual lifesaver, thank you 🫠

Without moving it's arms, i really need it for an animation...
Helpful, thanks. Although I did half to slow it down to .25 original speed to get a good reference. But still helpful.
Thank you

thank you so much :D
Does someone have a reference of a standard walk from the back? I can't find anywhere

Thanks! really useful!
like what i wanted
Glad we could help!
Very useful!
Thanks for your support, Toony Days
it must be acentuated if its for animation reference, if its too subtle details in movement will defently get lost....
Any chance you can get a normal walk? Of a male? Would be much appreciated!
Correct, but, in animation you have to exaggerate or the character appears to have no weight. Without exaggeration the animation is not believable.
helped out a lot
thanks! really useful
Everyone commenting that this is too exaggerated clearly never animated a day in their life.
i need to learn how to walk like a male model, please helpme... links, reference, books, DVDs everything is welcome.
