  • Various classic lorries drove over to the Midway Truck Stop recently for an informal gathering of lorry enthusiasts, so we headed over to take a look. Volvos were well represented, as was the ERF marque with several examples of this Sandbach-built vehicle from the 1970s & 1980s arriving in the lorry parking area. Scanias were also in attendance. In this video, footage of the lorries turning up (and later leaving) is joined by my walkaround look at their condition, liveries (more signwriting!!) and general features. If you like old lorries, classic British lorries in particular, I hope this video will meet with approval. The sounds of the early 1970s ERF, and the V8 Scania, shouldn't be missed.
To be alerted to future meets at this truck stop here in the UK near Whitchurch in Shropshire, take a look at the Shropshire Trunk Runs & Meets Facebook group. Considering that it was January 2nd when this meet took place, and that it's all very informal, there was a good turnout of classic lorries which hopefully will grow bigger as the better weather (hopefully) arrives before too long.
If you know of anyone who might be interested in this video, who doesn't regularly call in to RUclips, please pass on the link to it: • More classic lorry sig...
Also on the video, a brief glimpse of an Austin 7 Ruby, a Marcos, an MGB GT, and we also have a shufty at a Triumph TR250 (US equivalent to the UK TR5), plus a couple of classic British 'bikes.
There are many videos relating to commercial vehicles now on this channel. These include previous meetings at the Midway Truckstop (including the well-established Cheshire Run that sees lots of old lorries turn up), plus a few made at home of things I have here. When the old erf came in it sounded like it had a jake brake which is probably what you heard because I heard it aswell. Just noticed the green spacer on the top of the head and that's the jake brake.

Really enjoyable video, thanks. The old ERF is an 'LV' model with a 220bhp cummins and a Fuller gearbox, ridden in one years ago with my dad.

Even the older ERF managed an appearance. I to always love the signwrighting, such an art and of course a steady hand, not something I possess now unfortunately. Nice to hear them all and a few old bikes BSA included. Thanks for sharing this video. 👍

I like the signwriting as well, much work in it. I loved the straight piped V8, I think it was a Scania, a leaf out of my book, great sound.

The Dairy Crest lorry was in fact the Milk Marketing Board whose head office was at Thames Ditton. The registration plate carries a Surrey plate which ties up with the Thames Ditton HO address of the MMB.

The F6 had a fantastic driving position and great visibility but the FL6 had the best heating and ventilation system I ever experienced in any lorry. Though I preferred the he harder springs on the F6. The FL had better steering and brakes but she loved to lean over in the bends.

Should have said that the MMB tractor unit would have been used to pull a tanker taking milk from farms to the processing plant!

That ERF with the powered by Gardner sticker on the back of the cab should have read underpowered by Gardner that would have been more appropriate, great reliability but tragic power output and hard work to drive because of the low BHP,even with Turbo’s fitted they were pathetic and the one’s we run in 30 ton Foden tippers were knackered at 100,000 miles which is nothing for a Gardner engine is nothing,we had A and B series ERFs at Geoffrey Reyner transport in Manchester that did over 600,000 miles without even an injector change just regular servicing by my great mate Jim Selby, RIP my friend I’ve never worked with anyone that worked as hard as you in the most terrible conditions in Bridgeford Street Manchester next to the dental hospital, you were a hero working in those conditions in all sorts of weather we must have been NUTS but that is how it was in those days, they don’t know their born today with their heated workshops and vehicle lifts, none of that in our day was there old friend, just a piece of cardboard to lay on and a 45 gallon drum with coke to burn on it to keep warm and dry our wet overalls with, how things have changed.

A favor to ask: I live in the US and we don't see (most) of these lorries of any vintage. Question: Please, explain the circumstances whereby so many old lorries are beautifully restored and they are bimbling around to the truck stops. There is no equivalent sort of event here in the States. I would like to understand why. Thanks. And I'll take a Commer TS3 & a Mickey Mouse Foden to go, please.

These breakfast meets are just another type of show, ie opportunity to be out and about with your old truck. I've seen many photos of trucks in the US being used in parades so it's not that much different really. Thanks for watching

@@oldclassiccarUK Thanks for the reply. Really enjoy the channel. We have, 'Cars & Coffee' but nothing like the sort of meeting you regularly feature with the old lorries. Aside from a once a year event with ATHS in some far-away location, we have nothing to compare to the vintage of trucks, the immaculate restorations and the numbers of them in the density you are able to regularly feature. Is there some economic impetus to do the beautiful restorations I see in these videos? A '74 Peterbuilt is an erosion barrier in these parts.

And is there some regulatory requirement to cover the lug nuts?
