    It was a beautiful performance, despite the fall. Her artistry was unmatched, IMO.

    This artist has much more than "good technical merit." She always moves me. Always has something vital to say. The greatest I have ever seen, falls and all.

    Truly an icon in skating. A woman amongst the children.

    I love it, right at the end, the commentator with Dick Button (forgotten his name!) thought it was the close of her amateur career - how wrong he was!

    The commentators thought she would retire after this competition, having won a European title and a world bronze medal that year. But the next year, she repeated as European champion and became the oldest women's world champion ever.

    Maria was a beautiful figure skating champion. She was a woman. I believe today’s Russian girls’ figure skaters are injured children on ice. Thank you. Wonderful memories.

    "At least she's smiling about it. I think a year ago she would have almost been ready to commit suicide."
    Hahaha, oh Dick Button.

    She had become much more consistent and relaxed that year, and so she didn't crumble.

      +Jimmy Seraphin She is a Great Skater, but ... she deserved 7-10 place in SP and 4 overall! Laetitia Hubert deserved Bronze (as she did in 1992)! I am Marias fan, But she deserved NO MEDAL at this Worlds!( Look at her SP)! I am so sorry about Laetitia Hubert TWICE ROBBED from The World Bronze Medal!

      yeah right. Even if you placed her 1st in the long (I wouldnt have) her short was a total bomb and she should have been 7th or lower in it. It was even bigger gift than Michelle's short at the 99 worlds and that also was a big gift.

      @@ljhjufzvfvjxrf Laetita deserved the silver at the 1992 worlds. Not the bronze. Kerrigan was a mess there.

    That was a weird slip, maybe a rut or something? It was good she was able to smile and laugh it off.

    She might've won this

    • @russianskatingfan
      @russianskatingfan 8 лет назад +1

      +barkingtree88 she could have won the long program without that unfortunate fall but she wouldn't have won overall due to being 5th in the short.

  • @ChristineTheHippie

    Yeah, but she didn't fall apart after that at least and wasn't too upset over it.

    Why did she cut her hair off?!

    • @akibow4482
      @akibow4482 4 года назад +1

      Because She had lost anymedal in NAGANO Olympic Wimter Games before a month ago this World Championship.
      She wanted to change her felling condition.
      So I think She cut her hair Short Style.

    Her jumps were always so stiff. They had absolutely no flow out of them. They would almost come to a complete stop. It’s like the Russian skaters of this era had only an hour a day to practice. In addition to the jumps lacking in technique, their spins, spirals, footwork and artistry were very sub par during this time.

      At least Butyrskaya had a deep outside edge for her lutz as well as a true toe-pick and mimimal pre-rotation. Unlike some recent world champions who have never exhibited any of those things. All the emphasis is on the landings these days, not on the take-off, nor on correct edges and other things that are required for the jump according to its own definition. So it is safe to say that technique has regressed since the 90s, not progressed. Not one Eteri skater has ever had the technical abilities that Butyrskaya had. Also, Butyrskaya's artistry was the best of her era and it's still unsurpassed to this day. Today's artistry is totally fake and rehearsed.

    It's probably a rut or she put too much of her weight on the back of her blades.... and when you do that, there is no possible way you can save that... what a shame...
