How this program lost to Sarah Hughes' remains a mystery! Maria was the only skater with a triple lutz on an outside edge; most of Sarah's jumps were cheated on the entrance and under-rotated.
She wouldn't have beaten Slutskaya even if she beat her in the long since she was miles behind coming in (6th coming in to Irina's 1st). In fact even if she had won the long over Michelle Kwan, she still would have been only 3rd overall behind Irina and not close to catching her overall. And if I recall correctly she needed to be 2nd in the long over Irina just to get 3rd over Hughes, and did come 3rd in the long over Hughes, but needed 2nd just to get 3rd overall.
You could always see in Maria's face how she felt about her performance, and her smile said it all after she finished this beautiful program. The judges should always be ashamed of themselves for cheating her out of a medal. Her artistry, as usual, was magnificent, and her technical merit was very good. That was, easily, a 5.7 and a 5.9 performance. Personally, I would have given her a 6.0 for artistic expression. To me, Maria is the most beautiful artist ever to have graced the ice with their presence.

J F I think you can make the case that this was better than Slutskaya’s lp and should have been 2nd. That would have given her the bronze. Plus, her sp was better than Sarah’s and should have been 3rd behind Irina and Michelle.
@@evanperilstein5308 I just realized, if you figure in both of Irina's cheated 3Loops, Maria actually landed more clean triples (6 vs. 5). And unlike both or Irina's 3-3 combos, Maria's 3Toe-3Sal was fully-rotated and clean.
I love Sarah hughes. But think Maria should've taken Bronze. However, if sarah didnt win the bronze here, judges may not have let her win the Olympics the following year.
This announcer is an absolute joke to say Michelle Kwan won this on pedigree and not on form. Slutskaya had at least 3 bad landings and was hardly artistic.

For me This was most interesting free program from that season and I often loved what she showcased in the sport.

She says Spasbo "Thank You" in Russian and then she says Thank You in English. Such a beautiful woman.....
