    I recommend starting with the "First 12". There are a lot of them out there, so you can find the occasional deal. Plus, it gives you the key figures, which is a good starting point.
    Also, check flea markets and yard sales. While vintage Star Wars figures don't last long at those places, if you get there first thing in the morning, there are usually some great finds.

      g'day there, just got a question about the first 12 i understand not all 1977 figures are first 12 what are the differences...what makes a first 12 different from other 1977 figures??

    • @RansomeStoddard
      @RansomeStoddard 3 года назад +1

      @@travismcmillan1568 the first 12 all have a date stamp on them if 1977. The other figures from the first film are stamped 1978. The first 12 includes the main characters, Luke, Vader, Leia, Han, etc. They are always highly sought after.

    • @VainAttempts
      @VainAttempts 2 года назад

      @@travismcmillan1568 not only what the other guy said you also get the main characters to build a collection around. It’s easier to buy figures and know which ones to get around a main character than it’d be if you got a figure for like Lobot

    I’ve been collecting for 30 years. Flee markets used to be a gold mine in the 90s when I was a kid but Star Wars is too top of mind now. My advice for new collectors is to study up what individual figures go for on ebay by themselves. Then look for lots or groups of figures on sale together (sometimes the groups are cheaper.) You might be able to get a few small lots for $100 or less, keep the best figures you need, sell off or trade any doubles for more figures later.

  • @doctorgoodguy1
    @doctorgoodguy1 5 лет назад +7

    If you want to start collecting carded figures, some relatively inexpensive, but fun ones to start with in my experience are Rancor Keeper, General Madine, Ree Yees, Chief Chirpa, B-Wing pilot, and AT-ST Driver.

    • @johnpeterson2987
      @johnpeterson2987 5 лет назад

      Yes, and some main characters look better on Return Of The Jedi cards rather than the Star Wars cards IMHO. And they're much cheaper. Like Farmboy Luke, or Vader (check out the Mexican carded version for a cheaper one and they usually have better bubbles).

      Except the first half dozen cards or so, I have kept every vintage cardback I bought. I started keeping them because they showed the entire line on the backs---great source of info! And since the pics of the vehicles and playsets varied, I decided it was best to keep every cardback.
      I wish I still had my very first cardbacks.... that initial purchase of 12-back Luke, Artoo, and Threepio. Oh well.

    I’m 19 years old, and I didn’t grew up with these vintage toys, rather with the super articulated and highly detailed Clone Wars stuff. Still, I really like the look of the simple vintage aesthetic of these old toys.

    Great video!! I especially like the part about building a budget and studying the line I’ve been collecting for 38 years and I still can’t remember all the variations and what not. One tip I have is don’t be afraid to buy lots (groups) of figures on eBay you may only be looking for one figure out of 10 but if it’s in your budget you could get a good saving overall and be ahead of the game the next time a good trade comes up. Also to this day I still find decent figures in thrift and antique shops as well as flea markets(also the occasional garage sale).

  • @Barada73
    @Barada73 5 лет назад +2

    My one piece of advice would be to collect because you love Star Wars, NOT as an investment. If Hasbro keeps going with their Retro collection, then we will start to see some significant drops in vintage toy values. So, this might be the worst time to try gettig into buying vintage MOCs. Unless you are just buying for nostalgia purposes or because you love the character (in which case money is generally no object).

    • @meneerjansen00
      @meneerjansen00 5 лет назад

      I always give that advice to every collector of anything. Selling a collection costs you a heartbreak and it will bring in *much less* than you "invested".

      I like the Kellerman book the most, but I still have yet to find a truly great book for collecting vintage Star Wars figures that lists all the variations, international variations (like the removable hood Jawa), COO variations, which weapons variations go with which COO variations, etc. I don't need to read about what the character did in the film. Sorry, Mark Bellomo. I need to know collecting details. For example, maybe put in a part about how to identify fake weapons, capes, and stickers.

  • @richardanderlund
    @richardanderlund Год назад

    My advice is to go for it slowly. I made the mistake of going too fast at the beginning. I bought like 10 at a time. If you instead collect at a leisurely pace, you get more times you can long for a new figure. May the force be with you - always!

    Great video my friend, you make lot's of great point's. There is so much in this hobby that it would take a long time to go through it all. If you have any question's feel free to ask. As you will find choosing a focus is a good thing, as there are many branches on this tree. You have the basic loose and carded, then there are baggie, foreign, bootleg and the list goes on. My main focus is baggie and Lil Lady (Mexican) that's just my figure's.
    One thing that will come up is repo item's, myself I have no issue with them as I make custom figure's as well. If you do get them as place holders the big thing is drill a hole in the handle then there is no question it's fake. When buying read the full description as seller's will put a repo weapon at time's with the figure. If you see sale's for weapon lot's don't panic and think they have to be fake, there is a reason you see lot's of weapon's, it has to deal with the whole Kenner Care's thing. In short if you lost a weapon you would send a letter to Kenner and instead of getting only the item needed you would get a small box of like 25 of them, I did that as a kid.
    There isn't much I can think off that wasn't mentioned in the video, the biggest thing is if you have a question ask. like we learned in the Army the only stupid question is the one not asked. I have been collecting for year's, I even have my modified C-3P0 plus a few other's from my childhood. Collecting and hunting for the one's you want is a blast but like a great Jedi once said "once you start down the collecting path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you, it will" sorry couldn't resist a modified Yoda quote.

    Great advice. I collected modern sw until I got back it gi joe 8 years ago.
    One thing I did was I'd buy a "grail" a year. One year I'd buy a steelbrigade the next a terror drome and the next the USS Flagg.
    I'd buy regular figures and vehicles throughout the year but always tried to buy one top end item a year.

    loved the video. will be helpful to many collectors. wish i had used your advice. i was a ruthless careless collector. i knew what i wanted..did not waiver, spent whatever i had to no matter the price even if i couldnt afford it. heard and suffered the wifes wrath many times and had to barter to score a place in the house to display my "mistress collectibles " lol. years of frustration, lost money from items not as promised ,lost auctions, and paying far to much for something only to decide i did not need it in my collection anyway or deciding i should never have gotten rid of it and paid triple to get it back!!!!!!!! ah the joy of collecting. its really an insanity . a true relationship filled with alot of time...money spent for the cause and wasted emotion. was it worth it? depends on the person. i can tell you that when i go to my over 10,000 dollar man cave (and that end money spent result is very wrong probably double over the years) it brings me joy and peace throughout the years to enter a room of my childhood everyday. not to mention its the centerpiece of every conversation when anyone visits the house. truly impressive and i hope you all enjoy what you create. but like the junkman says...dont forget the fun. for me i will never know which was more gratifying ,the thrill of the hunt...or the capture .the struggle is real lol. enjoy!!!! may the force be with you.

    • @thejedisexmachine3979
      @thejedisexmachine3979 4 года назад

      also...if you are going to spend a small fortune on figures....you need to "DISPLAY" them! if you are going to waste money to keep items in cardboard boxes you become a hoarder. so ....when you display your stuff you "limit" your collection to the space you have and it forces you to collect only what you really want . also...spend the cash to display and protect properly..you will not regret it.get a custom case built. there are plenty of people on the web. or to display vehicles and ships try detolf glass cabinets from ikea..very inexpensive way and looks great!

    Leave the last 17 until last unless you happen to find them cheap in a charity shop, flea market or similar discount shop. Try and buy complete as you can pay silly money for a weapon but pay only slightly more for same weapon and figure. Try and buy from Facebook groups as eBay prices are getting silly of late and always pay goods and services in PayPal to protect yourself.

One of the tricks I use is look in junk boxes you can find loose figures in there then look for parts (guns and such) and boom you can get complete figures and it hasn't cost the earth.

    I'm hoping I'll just get some nice folks respond to this? My gut says its probably not true but here goes..I've recently starting collecting and have ordered from various places. I'm noticing many but not all of the bubbles are coming unsealed at the bottom. Is this normal? I had someone I bought from say they are never sealed and don't quite believe it. They even went as far to say some others put out from I believe late 70s and 80s were the same? Truth or not? Thanks so much!

      if not taking care if the bubble will pop off over time. unlikely they were never sealed but should have glue marks, if so then it was sealed at one time

    My advice would be collect for yourself, not for the community. That's where the book comes in handy. Look through it and see what strikes you. Don't try to collect what other people have, condition, complete runs, prototypes, just because they're getting positive feedback. Once you turn off your computer its just you and your collection and your money spent.

    My tip: don't buy loose figure without *ALL* the accessories. You'll be sorry later. Those loose accessories are hard to find and sellers ask serious dough for it.
    Oh, and another tip: stop collecting if you live in Europe, just enjoy what you already have. It's just too darn expensive because "surface rate" shipping from the US don't exist anymore. And forget 'bout collectors fairs: they used to be great, not so anymore. Unless you're a role player, that is. Then you can dress up as Slave Leia. Hmmmmm, maybe that Facebook tip from Junkman will help...
