I was sitting in my deer stand about 6:40 this morning watching you cut wood. I had to pause your video and sit down my sludge so I could harvest a little six-pointer. Finally getting back to finishing up the video!
Very slick. The log deck is key to keeping rounds off the ground. I've gone a slightly different direction by using extra large buckets on my loader to move wood from my sawbuck to my splitter, which I can move as needed along long rows of wood. Just gave you a follow.
I have seen a lot of sawmill and wood splitting videos like an insane amount. I watched several of your wood splitting videos and I will be purchasing the Easton made axis and it’s your fault 😂. That’s a good thing. Thanks for all your great videos, you have a great on camera personality and your camera shots are great too.
That new chain and bar sure made chips. Only thing, they camera was pointed right where they were coming out of the saw and now my eyes are full of sawdust!! That is a nice setup for sure. I wish that I had a setup like that 40 years ago when I was making a lot of firewood Thanks for bringing us along
I don't know why but for some reason I love cutting wood and miss it while I'm gone but hate it when I'm there. But I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
Good afternoon Sandy I am surprise to still see some colors in the trees I know you took this video a little while back because it is very seldom you would see leaves in the trees in mid November if I was younger and still doing fire wood I defenatly use a deck like your and I just love that vertical splitter nice little show have a great evening and same for the rest of weekend
Somewhat similar to my own setup here in Scotland. The log table with a transverse roller table at the processor is the best thing, with an overflow table beyond for setting aside oversize logs. The next time I touch the firewood which comes through my Palax Combi Mii processor it is being placed in the log boiler. The difference is that I only need the saw for oversize logs, which are fewer than twenty out of 23 tonnes per truckload. 👍🏻
you do have a great setup there. Oh and Chris was right, yesterday I finally got to run a 572xp in actual firewood cutting and boy was that nice and fast. There was no comparison to my old 60 and 65cc saws and no vibration and light. My old saws work good, they are homelite, echo's and poulan, but heavy and slow, compared to the 572xp. take care
Hey there Noel! Great to see ya made it to this video. I agree, a big saw for working the firewood yard is nice if ya got it. Since I do forestry work where I"m carrying the saw through my trails while I'm cutting down trees I prefer to have the lightest saw possible that will cut the tree down as that keeps my from getting as tired over the course of the day and allows me to. cut more in a day.
Sandy, definitely a nice set up with that log deck. The new Axis is wicked fast for sure and can compete with many horizontal splitters for production work. Thanks for sharing 👍TCT
Nice setup. I wonder, do you have a standard length for firewood. In Denmark it is 30 cm (actually the old foot). About one touch handling, I think you´re counting wrong.
Hi Claus, standard where I live is generally 16" lengths. For me the only time I touch the firewood is when I"m moving the round from the log deck and splitting it. All other steps happen with equipment.
Great setup, thanks for sharing. Sandy, would you consider making a video to show how you make your own videos? You've motivated me to want to share some basics of living off-grid, as I've been for a year now, and still have a career in the city. I would greatly appreciate knowing what you use to give me a good starting point, as your videos are great. Cheers, Kyle (an off-grid Psychologist)
Good morning Sandy! Curious how your foot feels after running that splitter for a time. I finished stacking our firewood Friday! Had an extra cup of coffee that afternoon to celebrate! Just in time for our first good snow. How's the weather in your area?
Hey Jill! Great to hear from you. That's a good question. I think since the range of motion is quite small and doesn't require much more than a lift of my toes and step down, I don't end up noticing anything after a day of splitting. Weather in my area has been getting colder and colder but the snow has been holding off. I can feel the ground freezing up now and I think I"ll be around the freezing mark for day time highs in the next week or so so snow will be here soon. Bitter sweet as I want to finish the sawmill shed without snow but I do like taking out the snowmobiles haha
@@sawingwithsandy I know the feeling. wait til you reach 60. I'm 61 and still do that but just about 4 cords a year. I have full logging truck delivered and process myself but I love the exercise. Great job Sandy and nice equipment you have. Greetings from Sussex county NJ!
Keep your chaps for the summer. I have a pair of warm weather saw pants,…and they are still warm. My process is spend the day bucking and staging. Then spend the next day just splitting. I couldn’t ever buck a little, and then split. Those pants would get too warm in the warmer weather to wear all day. So I just limited the amount of days that I wear them.
Wow that's an awesome setup you have there eh! I'm going to make a deck like that in a side bank I have for hardwood and slabs off the mill. Great idea... how long to process a cord of firewood and ballpark $ of splitter? Thanks for sharing this video.
The side bank would be a good idea! Hi Denis, I can't quite remember what this splitter goes for. I believe Eastonmade keeps their pricing on their website though if I'm not mistaken. I'd imagine I can get a cord cut and split into the IBC cages in 45 minutes or so. I haven't timed myself recently though so I can't really know for sure
Hi there from sunny Aberdeen you are giving yourself a lot of work cutting your firewood. If you count how many times you handle it you could reduce this quite a bit. Your tree thickness is small so a machine like the Mastersplit 36 is a much better use of your time. It has a lifter that saves the back , a conveyor plus a hydraulic chain blade where the blade is lubricated by the hydraulic tank on the machine , so no petrol or chainsaw oil to worry about . It is a processor and extremely fast, check it out it is a one man operation . I use one for my own use and I am not a firewood contractor and 75 years old . My one has a 14 hp Honda engine on it and a tractor PTO pump amazing machine light years ahead super quality.
it is not good that it lubricates with hydraulic oil. hydraulic oil is not a lubricating oil. and you have to keep an eye on the level in the tank so the hydraulic pump doesn't start pumping air, then you can get cavitation in the pump. And a real saw chain oil is more environmentally friendly than a hydraulic oil.
Out in Aberdeenshire, I use a Palax Combi Mii, with a roller table. Check the processor out. Logs sit transverse across the table, roll at waist height to a roller race table, and into the processor. Much less handling. 👍🏻
Hi Chris, it does appear to be lined up correctly from what I can tell. I think there’s slight movement there by design but I’d have to ask Eastonmade for more specifics
I agree Sandy, something about working with the logs. Chips really fly with the new chain eh. I'm chomping at the bit, one the leg is back together I'll be back at it too. Cheers bud, Mark 🪵🔥🌴
Nice bucking station. It would definitely work for most logs I buy. I'm curious as to why you chose the Husqvarna 555 over the 562xp or other saws on the market.
I found the 555 was close to power output of the 562 and was a bit cheaper overall than the 562. My main goal is power to weight ratio and I didn't need anything more than the 60cc saw for what I cut so my number one choice would be the 562 but since the 555 was close in specs I went with it to save the extra money.
@sawingwithsandy my main thing is the weight being the same. No sense in saving a few $ if the weight is more. When I weighed saws, the 562xp and Rancher 460 with the same length bar are the same weight on a scale. That said, the 555 is the happy medium between those saws.
Thanks for the video! Great to see your operation and log deck. I don't have a tractor... yet, but I can see the advantage of the log deck if one could load it. Is it my imagination or is your Axis' orange a little more reddish than mine? Maybe it's the Canadian atmospheric difference? 😀
that's why i always try to have a mudmaker where i play. get it started then play till i need a break then have some then get back to playing till i can't see my hand in front of my nose.
Sandy...I'm sure you are but,.. I'm just letting you know be careful with your back. I am I'm in the hospital right now because of back injury.. Old? Car accident from yesterday? Who knows where it's from. I just know it's pretty bad!!
Couldn’t agree more. Great way to let the rest of the world disappear and just enjoy what you are doing. I like that idea of a wood tray for bucking. Thinking of doing same at some point. Still have to build the woodshed. Thanks again for the great videos. Really enjoy them and your relaxed and easy way of letting us join you on your adventure. Cheers!
Hey there Daniel! My favourite type is the free type haha. I'm happy with any hardwood to be honest but I think I like hard maple and cherry to he most. How about you?
@sawingwithsandy In Alberta we don't have a ton of hardwood, at least not of significant size. But i love splitting Ash and burning Birch. That being said, I have plenty of Spruce, Pine and Poplar wood that I burn in the backyard firpit
Nah,you’ve got a skid steer just put a head on it 💁picks the logs up crosscuts it to length a splits it .a drop it over a trailer or stillage.Job done,no manual handling at all🤷🏼🐒
I call it chainsaw therapy - better than going to any therapist. Hope you aren't getting hammered with all of this white stuff! Keep the rubber side down.
A good saw, a sharp chain, and a good log splitter makes for a great day. Good vid. Thank you.
Always a good day out there running the equipment. I put off getting a new bar and chain for so long but now I’ve got one I’m wishing I got one sooner

Man i love your firewood operation!
Just purchased the eastenmade 22-28 and really enjoy running it!
Great video brother 👍 👌
As an older fellow with sons probably about your age I am very happy to see how safely you work. Cheers from Canada. ~ulrich

Hey Mike! I’m going to have to start giving out PPE to keep the dust out of everyone’s eyes with those cancer locations haha
I agree, there is something therapeutic about splitting.
I think it’s the same feeling I get running the sawmill. Can just get lost in the work and forget about life’s problems
I don't know why but for some reason I love cutting wood and miss it while I'm gone but hate it when I'm there. But I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

LOVE THAT SPLITTER
Hey Rodney! Great to see ya on the video. Thanks for coming along for the wood splitter run today
Very nice , thanks for sharing !!!!! 🙏👍😊❤️
Always great to see ya here David! Thanks for your support
Eastonmade sure does make some high quality log splitters, it's a far cry from the little splitter that never wanted to start.
Haha that old thing I used to use sure was more a headache than anything else
awesome set up you got going on there sandy!

Very impressive system CHEERS FROM MANITOBA CANADA
Great video. The Hyd drive motor for the conveyor is really wobbleing. Is that line up correctly?
Hi Chris, it does appear to be lined up correctly from what I can tell. I think there’s slight movement there by design but I’d have to ask Eastonmade for more specifics
Well thought out system Sandy!! What does something like that cost? Thanks.
What machine do you prefer most the Axis or the 12-22? I’d be curious to know why as I’m on the fence between the two models. Thanks in advance!
I wonder if you can get a multi-point splitter head for the hydraulic ram? Cut down on the labor.
Looks like a really food day.
I agree Sandy, something about working with the logs. Chips really fly with the new chain eh. I'm chomping at the bit, one the leg is back together I'll be back at it too. Cheers bud, Mark 🪵🔥🌴
Hope you're feeling better soon Mark! The snow will be here before we know it and hope you're healed up well before the heavy stuff hits

Impressive set up, would be interested in how that splitter would handle Australian hardwood.
Super axe in Vic make the same and other types which split hardwood easily. Often seen at Ag shows or on line at their Web site.
I just got my ultra on Friday and I love it
That's one nice splitter Chris!
Very nice setup
Hey Larry!
I just bought a used Harbor Freight manual-pump log splitter off Facebook Marketplace. I shoulda saved my pennies for one of these.
Make the log deck a livebed and it would be even better
that's why i always try to have a mudmaker where i play. get it started then play till i need a break then have some then get back to playing till i can't see my hand in front of my nose.
That’s the perfect setup right there! I’ve seen mud makers recently for camping that run off a small propane tank
@@sawingwithsandy you can use a propane burner if you wish but usually i go with a little wood burning camp stove.
👍great video, Sandy 😎

Going to make a log deck & wounding how you mad yours

Is there an electric option ?
Hey Sandy, ever get firewood customer who wants 15 inch long wood and no longer.. painful, ya know?
I'm pretty flexible but I always say I can't be 100% accurate on every piece so some may be closer to 14" to be sure I don't go over 15"
