    Great video. I studied abroad in Quito, Ecuador and lived there for 4 months. While in Ecuador I got to visit all 4 regions of the country and get a good taste of all it has to offer. It has truly left a lasting impact on my life and I have to say that Ecuador is a very underrated country and a place I think a lot more people should visit.

    You forget to mention that folks should watch their step on the sidewalks when walking around the cities. Best to stay off phone and pay attention to where your stepping. There are plenty of obstacles that can trip you up. Stop walking if you want to see something for a moment. Its also best to develop the habit of just keeping an eye around you as well as looking down.

    Great tips! I spent time in Ecuador last year and only spent a night in Quito before going to our Hacienda near Cotopaxi, at just under 12,000 feet. I came down with altitude sickness which was terrible, but it eventually started getting better. But our hike up Cotopaxi was SO difficult, just because the lack of oxygen! I knew it would be tough, but it gives a new perspective when you watch climbers on Everest taking a step at a time. We hiked to 16,000 feet and it was rough going!

    • @amywalker7515
      @amywalker7515 3 года назад +1

      You should have given yourself several weeks to acclimate to the altitude before doing the climb. Even young, healthy people have died from altitude sickness attempting extreme sports activities before their bodies had a chance to adapt. I was in Quito for just a few hours, so it didn't bother me there, but after about 3 days in Cuenca, which is only at 8,500 feet, I started having problems. Couldn't walk fast or any distance without shortness of breath and chest pain so severe I thought I was having a heart attack. After 11 days, it started to get better, but it was time to leave, so I never found out if I am one of those who never adjusts. It's a thing one has to respect.

    Quito's north side by the park and the old town are pretty safe. Take a hotel shuttle to the south side bus station if need be. The station is modern and safe but outside of it not so much. Banos de Santa agua is really awesome and safe. Riobomba is also pretty safe. Ecuadorian people are very friendly. The food was very good mostly farm fresh. Get out of the big cities, the smaller towns are much better. The bus rides are not a problem except there slow.
    Talk to your hotel about doing tours. They will often get you the best deal and experience.
    .l
    Lastly stay where white people stay. Watch your drink, dont get drunk. Go home when the kids in a town go home at night, (10 pm usually) are always a good way of avoiding trouble.

    Three Main Points about Ecuador.
    1)Be Careful walking in the wood or forest as there are Mountain Lions,Called Jaguars or Pumas. They are Lions that will kill you.
    2)Do not go to Quito Bus Station ever EVER.
    3)Chimborazo is not a place to go unless you understand that you will be 2 kilometres above the Summit of Everest.

    Good advice, Wolter, but I would add or amplify a couple of things. You should make sure all your regular immunisations are up to date, and should see a travel doctor about what specific extras you should get: yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis, etc. S/he might also recommend acetazolamide to help avoid altitude sickness while you get acclimatised.
    There is one place where you can totally drink the water, and that's Cuenca. We're in our late 70s and drink bottled water everywhere else, but in a total of several months in Cuenca, we've never, ever, been sick.
    As far as mosquitoes and biting flies are concerned, down in the Amazon rainforest, you need the effective repellents, deet and icaridin both, and should ALSO wear long sleeves. Things like citronella are much less effective. There are also a lot of dangerous snakes, so knee-high rubber boots are a must for hiking there. A lot of lodges have them to lend, but we carry our own just to be sure.
    So take sensible precautions, but enjoy a beautiful and friendly country.

      Jasmine Dyer Just see if you can find a job there first. There are so many Venezuelan there and the all want to get a job.
      Some of the Venezuelan are highly educated and speak English.
      Venezuelan are all over in South America looking for a better live.
      If you have a future with your boyfriend let him come to your country.

      Evelin Holmes Well he lives in the US. I believe he is the only one in his family that is an American born citizen but to him Ecuador is his home because he got family there. I don’t know if there is a future since we just started dating but it’s always good to learn Spanish and to learn more about his country and the culture.

      Totally understand. But a lot of Ecuadorians want to come to the US and Canada. To get better jobs and make more money then go back home .
      Yes Ecuador is nice and warm and retired people move there for the weather. We both tried but the lifestyle was not for us. God bless that can make a go of it. Not everthing is for everyone.👍

    What about crime in small towns like Chordeleg ?
    We hop to retire in Ecuador...maybe Cuenca...maybe a smaller town.
    Thx !

    • @stevemunoz4553
      @stevemunoz4553 5 лет назад +1

      The rate of crime in Cuenca is low and even lower in small towns. It increased a bit because of the migration of people, but is not that bad if you compare it with other cities or countries. I believe that is one of the reasons of why a lot of retire people live there.

      Altitude sickness mainly in Quito but they have ways to combat that.. Antacids will do the trick and resting ro adjust for two days

      Cuenca and Quito are much higher than Colorado. The Andes are not for you.

    • @noname-vi1jr
      @noname-vi1jr 4 года назад

      @@mynickname4884 There are many towns and ski resorts in Colorado near or over 3000 meters above sea level, which is the same elevation as Quito and other cities in the Andes.
