I don't think it's accurate to say that York Boatmen wouldn't have stopped and bartered for food or bought their own purchased foods aboard! Just because very few camps or isolated communities survive into today along their route, it's not to say that there weren't established camps! It's highly likely there were as these routes were all very well travelled by different companies of shippers and traders! It's taking things a bit far to say that they shouldn't have traded for these things, what do they think boatmen picked up and shipped back from Hudson Bay?! UPDATE: so there's no jam allowed (which we knew they did travel with) but FLASHLIGHTS are period appropriate?! This makes absolutely no sense Xx
A great series. On one of the beach camps, I saw a modern tent 100m away - the cameraman (with mosquito netting).
The those effing mosquitoes must have been a terrible burden on the Yorkmen then and, obviously, now. What a great television series.
