    I had to come back to this now that it's been almost a year, to share my progress... when I recorded this vod that Jonal reviewed, I was going back and forth between silver and gold on my original account, I was flexing a lot, and I'd just bought this new account to see if I could place higher by one tricking Genji. I did - I placed 2491. One game out of platinum. I didn't get to plat that season - the account went on a huge loss streak after placements and fell to 2100.
    It's been 11 months. I'm in diamond now, and working towards masters.
    When I started playing Overwatch, I was bronze. I was 900 sr. You can go on my channel, go all the way back, and see vods of my bronze gameplay. There was a time, back in seasons 5 and 6, when I felt like getting out of bronze was impossible.
    Don't give up. I won't - I'm going all the way to GM.

      @Sean Reardon I borrowed a friend's smurf account that was 3419, and put that into masters, at 3507. I haven't gotten my own account to masters yet. Still working on the consistency of my play so that I'll be able to do that! I expect it will be soon, in the next 3-4 months :)

      ah, thank you! for some reason I understand crosshair placement after my first month of playing the game... I know from looking at structures on the maps approximately where "head height" is, so it's easy to keep my crosshair there. my movement and game sense is garbage in comparison because I don't play video games before and don't have a good sense of what I should do :p

    Also I am coming from ps4 and I just recently started building a PC to play overwatch over there,I'm high master/GM flex on console,but my aim on pc is so bad I better be on silver or something XD
    Anyways keep those kinds of reviews up,you are really helpful.

    I think one thing that can set you apart from the rest in terms of coaching is making a chalkboard/whiteboard type map layout. It should help in explaining more about positioning and I think the effort that It would take is minimal, but would come out with massive results.

    This video itself was AMAZINGLY helpful as I've been a gold genji since season 3 with almost 200 hours on genji and have watched countless tips and tricks videos as well as other coaching videos for genji and even aim improvement and stuff like that and none of it really helped. I saw improvement in those areas, but in terms of sr, it seemed like I was just dropping and I felt like I wasn't actually being of any use. Since I've started watching your videos for the right usage of certain abilities and how his positioning should be and this coaching video, I found that I do the exact same thing as this genji in the video. Now that I've been working to stop those mistakes it seems like I'm making some actual progress and I find playing genji a lot more enjoyable to play now because I don't feel like I'm trying to solo carry anymore (which would always lead to me dying in the enemy's back line) and I'm actually working with my team a lot more too. These are awesome videos and I can't thank you enough for them lol. Definitely subscribing.

    hey ive seen some people draw on the pictures as a way to show what your talking about or pulling up a custom game and showing what you mean
    its kinda nice to visualize
    like at the start where he tried that flank wall climb and bumbed his head maybe you could just pause draw a line or something
    or like 10:00 " the zarya and cree are there" but where point to it as youre talking cause he cant see it when he pulls out blade in the moira
    obviously not for something super simple like that you know what i mean

    Something you do in some of your other videos and also a bit in this one is you talk about "mindset" and how to approach a situation that does not only work with Ganji but with a lot of heroes! I really like that for there is something for everyone to use, not just Ganji players! I am a gold ranked player that is trying to get good and out of gold! :-) (Sorry for my Danish-english!)

  • @ba5sking
    @ba5sking 7 лет назад +1

    I started 3-4 seasons ago in silver. And just finished placements this season at 2898. I saw a comment earlier about your advice not applying to gold. If it we're me in that video I think everything your saying is similar to the behaviour I exhibit now that helped me consistently climb out of gold(I oscillated alot between mid gold and high silver until I was more consistent).
    Alot of ppl say there is no team work in gold or silver, but honestly there is a way to tell when a bulk/majority of your team is making an effort to push or go in without any shot callers. Usually the teams are fair so there is a good chance the enemy team has roughly the same amount of players who also grouped up as your team.
    Anyway good vid I plan on sharing since I think you put it in very good words the tunnel vision issue I see my good mechanical friends do all the time in gold games.
    Good luck with your series :) I'll be watching

    I have watched another top 500 coach who says that genji should almost always be flanking because it creates added pressure from another angle, u dont have to engage (unless your team is about to, u just need to make your presence behind them known to burn enemy cooldowns and provide pressure etc). However, u say the exact opposite (stay with team and help kill secure). The way I see it, sticking with your team makes it much easier to confirm kills and be safe, but flanking creates more pressure at the cost of much more risk, and can provide opportunities that u wouldn't find by sticking with the team. What is your opinion on this?
    Also, great video I love this channel.

      You should stay with your team most of the time.Sometimes you can flank but in lower ranks more often then not this causes staggering.

    • @hyperion-7631
      @hyperion-7631 7 лет назад

      splatermaster2 a lot of genjis have different play styles like shadder2k stays back behind his team and dashes in to kill low health targets but other players like shadowburn are aggressive and hard fraggers it’s like how some flick and some track with mccree it’s just whatever is best for you

    I like your analysis of the game, but you made way too many unnecessary pauses which breaks the flow of the video. You should have added a bad dash counter in editing and just increase it every time he does it, instead of pausing every time. Take a look at Animetic's mercy videos where she has really good text on top of the gameplay that explains her though process. Other than that keep it up, your videos are some of the best quality Overwatch analysis I've seen.

    • @matt5898
      @matt5898 6 лет назад +1

      KillerMZE he needs to point out these mistakes. Hes coaching a gold not a diamond. This sort of thing would make sense at higher ranks but for gold's trying to get feedback something they thing is helpful could genuinely be detrimental. I think the format is good. With good through explanation.

    it's not that dash is not an engagement tool tho. If you use it correctly, it sure can be one.
    also, for everyone starting out with Genji; i'd recommend watching Blade-combos. This one combo (Slash-Dash-Slash) is a guaranteed kill almost everytime, even on tanks if your team is helping.
    He sure is right with him saying use dash to dash onto other opponents while using blade. But if you know you get this kill, use one dash for comboing. The kill will reset your dash and you can dash to another target.
    All in all; nice coaching! :D

  • @hunchosett
    @hunchosett 7 лет назад +1

    In my opinion both playstyles of Genji are viable (flanking and team oriented), so I was a bit confused when you were discouraging this player at the beginning since he had the aim necessary to pull off being a flanker; but I suppose looking at the bigger picture things aren't simply that cut out and dry and there are many factors at play (his movement/gamesense was extremely lacking).
    Regardless, great video man.

    • @FireClaw00
      @FireClaw00 7 лет назад

      Twitch God The flanking play style is one of the weakest playstyles due to all the trouble to backline can give him. With McRees, soldiers (due to their helix and healing), Anas, mercys that use GA well. Flanking is much harder to get any value out of especially in higher ranks where you'll just get destroyed in a few shots. Hence why playing team oriented and then going in and brawling is better.

  • @mattias2576
    @mattias2576 7 лет назад

    one of the biggest things i see in lower ranks is the lack off engagement, i used to be a diamond player (borderline master) back in season 4, however i stopped playing and came back now. and im in mid plat working my way up. people dont engage they just stamd in chokes, one of the most effective calls i make every match is to simply tell our team tp push, i tell them, be concise dont hesitate and push together. go all in or dont, also telling your team things like, me and ana will combo this fight, no one else use ult we dont need them now can help a lot

    everyones taking fault with jonal saying to play safer, but heres my thoughts on it. i think the main problem with his flanking is that he commits too quickly without the awareness of where his team is, which often leads to him going in solo and feeding, since its like he is killing pointlessly. a more aggressive playstyle is fine, but not if the team cant take or already lost the fight

    • @riseofedgecrusher1357

      that is fair, a lot of time I struggle to keep track of what my team mates are doing once we're past the first team engagement, and make decisions based on the position of the enemy team instead of the position of my own team (I'm the genji player in this video) ... all the times I'm doing the bad dash onto the mercy here, the reason is because I think that the mercy is far enough behind/away from the rest of her team that I can kill her faster than her team mates can come to deal with me. I didn't consider whether my own team can follow up after I kill the mercy

    Jonal a follow you advices and finally get plat rank in season 8, play in gold rank all other seasons. You’re tips for genii was exceptionally useful. But you’re not playing in gold rank, all high skill players don’t fully understand problems that we are facing at our rank. You cannot relying on your team you need to focus on your own gameplay, communication actually really overrated in our ranks it don’t help you or your team just create toxicity and distraction, when your team loosing no words can help, and when your winning no words needed, and most important thing that gold players need is good positioning not overrated aim, being in good position allow you to create opportunities to make picks and stay alive that what all gold need to practice a lot is positioning. Sorry for English not native speaker.

      that's true in bronze, but I don't think it's always true in gold. sometimes you get bad team mates, yeah, but my team mates in this game were pretty nice, and while they weren't very coordinated, I think they would have responded if I could direct them what to do, like to nano me or to set up blade and grav combo. I don't do this because I'm afraid of making a bad decision and having the entire team follow me in a bad decision, but I think Jonal is fair in saying I should have work more with the team and pay attention to what they're doing so I can help them, instead of go looking for solo kills all the time... I feel like my team mates are focusing the wrong target most of the time, but it would be better for all of us to focus the same thing than for me to focus the right target alone

    tbh this is a good coaching vid but your saying that he did things wrong just cuz of his playstyle
    your playstyle is a safe playstyle he is aggresive and your telling him he has to switch his playstyle while he really doesnt
    but yes he did go in alone alot of times and wasted dashes and stuff but his playstyle and flanking isnt that bad

      There's a difference between playing aggressive and playing stupid.
      Going in from a flank 1v6 while your team is dead/regrouping/not engaging is sure being aggressive but its also insanely dumb. If u do the flank when your team engage so their team have something to shoot at can work especialy if u go in without using your dash for no reason cause if they turn on u u can dash out.
      If u go in 1v6 and first thing u do is dash a target if they are not braindead they will turn around and you're dead.
      Call that an aggressive playstyle if u like to but the decision making in this vid is why he's in gold.
