The humility and ease Michael has with pointing out his mistakes in front of a lot of people is the best lesson. My expectations of myself are too high and I'm way too hard on myself.
It was also nice to see the pure joy of playing music with other musicians.

Daniel is an absolute BOSS and he was quite gracious to hang back and let you take so many leads! What a generous, and humble move on his part. Such a mature player to be so young. I like the self critique about 3/4s of the way through the most. Its a great class on 'how to play WITH a band, not AGAINST them.' That is such an underrated skill set to have, perhaps even more than how WELL you can play, because it requires you to listen to not just yourself, but be aware to listen everyone else too, in real time.

I love how hard you are on yourself while it’s over the top there’s a lot of up and coming and established players need to hear shit like “if you aren’t playing something anyones gonna remember stop” and you are absolutely right now one player should be over or above the band and the song as a whole.

Improvisation and live performance has always been my thing. When I was like 9 years old my piano teacher (yeah I started on piano, switched to guitar at age 16) put me in a recital and didn't tell me til 3 days before! AND I played a complex piece by Strauss, the most difficult piece played by anyone in the whole night.
I went up and threw DOWN. Nailed it note for note!
Until the middle section. My hands were raised to come crashing down on the piano...and I forgot. The whole.
    Song. For-effn-GOT!
There was a pregnant pause, long enough to send whispers through the audience. During that time something changed in me, or maybe a flow regulator broke, a governor failed.
I looked at the audience and grinned. Almost sneered! Then my hands came crashing back down and I proceeded to totally make shit up for almost two minutes before the memory of the end of the tune came back and I finished.
God that was glorious. I never felt anything like it, like being utterly LIT on the creative power that builds universes. It was such joy!
I got a standing O. Had to come out and take a second bow. My piano teacher just looked at me and said, "how the hell....what the...where did _that_ come from?"
I had improvised two minutes of Strauss that were never in anything he ever wrote, and the audience loved it. My performance was good, but when it went where it went, it just murdered that audience. Put em on their backs with their feet up in the air.
Why tell you all this? Well, because I've been improvising for 40 years. And what I saw and heard you do in this video was lead a whole incredibly great band through a complex 15 minute improvisational masterpiece. That band is _God_ , man, I'm telling ya...their tempo changes, the way they all threw phrases and motifs around, how they all listened...dude, a band like that, and you're the one who introduced the changes they then implemented.
I'm not negating your self analysis, to do so would be arrogance personified. But what the moments you describe, where they led... what I am saying is that all your OH NO I BLEW MY MOJO TOO SOON, all that is part of what made this work. To me the best improvisations have peaks and valleys, rise and fall and rise again dynamics that were crucial to keeping this interesting. Plus, your sheer joy at being there and getting to do this awesome thing.
The shouts and cheers of the audience at the end prove that you done did a good thing lol. Great stuff. GREAT stuff!

Kudos for having the guts to try a bender in that situation. I have a tele with a Bigsby and bought a B blender. It was a great intro to benders. Grabbing the tremolo bar to bend isn’t as easy as pulling the strap so, I bought that Mason tele for the B bender. If you have a Bigsby, I highly recommend the B Blender. It’s a great cheap alternative to getting an actual bender installed.

Wow, enjoyed this one immensely for several reasons: I recently discovered "the Don Kelley Band" and all of that legacy that goes with that - so there's a lot to mine from just that; that is how I discovered Daniel ( and several others, of course). So. Michael showcasing Daniel, for me, is just fantastic serendipitous timing. Then the analysis of this by Michael was fascinating. I will be honest, the first live performance I watched of Donato was not good for me - his unconventional vocal range was not working for me, but he's improved since that performance, individually and he's wisely added a backup singer that compliments his unusual voice. So hey, I just put myself in Grateful Dead space (a band DD loves), and just groove to the fantastic songs and hippy vibe, lol . And then from '36 to '38, Michael really summarizes beautifully what I just watched. I appreciate Michael being vulnerable and transparent, bringing us along in the spirit of teaching and just sharing in the experience. Very cool and fun video!
