It was, is and will remain one of the greatest pop songs ever written.

My son's godfather's brother, John Byrne was in this band and helped write this song. We were all at university together in Liverpool and must have heard five different masters of this song!

It is pronounced The Lars not the LAs as in Los Angeles. La in Liverpool is short for Lad.

Including the r only works for people who don't pronounce r's eg some English accents, Australian, NZ. The simplest way to make it universal is 'lahz'.

None of the band members has commented on what its about. However, many journalist have tried to connect the tune with the taking heroin. Shrug your shoulders and just accept we simply don't know. You know what? I've always liked the mystery in lyrics of a song or in poetry. If we knew everything we would be Gods or would we simply be frustrated in the fact there are no longer surprises.

Many of the band members have been asked, all have denied it.

Lee himself said it was about a girl and said he had never tried heroin before

Lee Mavers never took heroin until 1990. The song was written in 1987, and released in 1988.

I heard a cover of this song, before this original one. It was by "Sixpence None The Richer" and was from around 2000.

This is a good song and I like the cover by sixpence none the richer, but the only thing about it is that this song is really about drugs, not about a girl. Not necessarily a fan of that, but, I do like the flow of the song

73azrael the band have never said it was about drugs. It’s been interpreted that way.

Good spot with the song meaning. I think it was purposely left open but suspect it's about drugs.
