Ah I remember as a 14/15 year old helping out at this railway. In the wagon shop were two Austerity 0-6-0 locos belonging to Max. One of which was in ticket and the other in restoration. Being small I was in both the firebox and smoke box removing tubes. Happy days driving steam engines at such an early age and helping with the work around. Oh and there wasn't any weeds then.

Happy memories working there 1983/84 as a volunteer evenings & weekends when I was student at Newcastle. There was an old character then called Ozzie. Ozzie was deaf as a post but seemed to know all about the Bowes incline history. Ozzie will be long gone, though I wonder what happened to all the others around at the time.

You must have just missed me....I was a volunteer when I was a student....1982-83. If I remember rightly Ossie had worked on the line when It was in NCB hands. He had been a platelayer Monday- Friday, but drove the loco for engineering work - e.g. track relay work -on Sundays. Hi hearing must have failed very suddenly - it was alright when I knew him.

Hi Gary, is there an email I can possibly contact you on?
I am in my final year at the University of Sunderland studying Journalism, and would love to be able to use this video as curated content in my final year portfolio.
I am creating an informative piece on the most haunted locations in Tyne and Wear for publication on SR News. All credit would be given to you, and any other links you would like me to provide in the information.
    Kindest Regards, Jessica Errington.
