Turn the eye print dress into a skirt! The fabric is beautiful!

This really inspired me to start sewing myself. I've only ever sewn clothes for Barbies, never for myself. The thought of a piece not turning out well enough after wasting so much fabric on it is intimidating, when I mess up Barbie clothes, it's at least not a lot of fabric that's lost. But I think I'll try it one day. I don't know if I'll be brave enough to wear what I made in public though...

I used to make a lot of doll clothes for the exact same reason. Don't feel discouraged! This was pretty bad because I put myself on a ridiculously short time limit for each piece. Normally things turn out better than this, and in the time since I did this challenge, I've been doing a lot more sewing with much better results than I ever had before.

Oh I started with Barbies too! Now I design and sew stuff for myself often. You can do it!
Edit: Take the time to find cheap muslin or sheets to make mockups. Then you have a good fit before you use the nice fabric.

That's how I started! Perhaps before you start buying fancy fabric, try using old bedsheets until you gain enough confidence.:)

I love the jumper dress! It works so well with the mustard top too, so great choice and well done on the clothing. Keep it up! :D

Its really interesting to watch your most recent wardrobe videos and see how much has changed over the years. You went from jeans and knit tops to daily wear skirts and linen tops with some wild adventures in between. So much fun!

Oh god this video still exists 😶 (you’re right though, that was a very “normal” wardrobe I was going for. I don’t think I can ever go back to pants. They feel so restrictive and uncomfortable now)

as a knitter it seems so strange to see a knit jumper being sewn instead of knitted! i would really recommend learning to knit if you want to, it’s so therapeutic while also challenging and very useful.

Yeah when I saw you sewing it I was very confused. Great thing about knitting is that on a simple pattern it is easy to do watching TV or hanging out with people as it is highly repetitive. be warned that it takes a long time to make things compared to sewing

      @habituscraeftig 3 года назад +3

I was confused how she thought she could fit a knit garment into a month-long capsule project. But I refuse to sew knits at all (and only wear them when it's necessary to the garment I want), so when I saw her do that, I just thought, "Oh, I guess you *could* just sew it...." Good to know that it's not that simple.

I am so glad you posted the review! I've also been wondering how your wardrobe turned out and how you liked each item. It sounds like we have similar habits. I also spend a lot of time reading patterns and books, and studying fit and techniques. I've since learned I need to step up my game by practicing what I've learned, because my execution is not great. Good luck to us both. :) I hope you post more videos on your sewing. I've really enjoyed it.

I am so inspired by you. I have been altering clothes to fit me for years and making costumes too. I think I will take some of your ideas and try them on for size...maybe simply not buying any outerwear for a year and just organizing what I have into a set of capsule wardrobes.

Yes the eye print dress is beautiful. I like the idea of saving the skirt. Put the top with a similar purple fabric and sell it to a size 0 girl. I know that patterns can be great if you tailor them after cutting fabric. You are an amazing young women and I just can’t help to be proud of you. You really are exceptional. Oh and the jeans. What a brave thing to tackle. They look very nice. Your right about alway putting some spandex in your denim’s. Thanks for publishing

I have found that the answer is almost always: make a muslin (mock-up) first.

Another thing you might do on the pintuck blouse, do an addition of fabric to lengthen the sleeves with pintucks to conceal the seams

I'm obviously late to the party. You haven't posted much about your everyday wardrobe in a while. Still sewing? Have you discovered indie pattern designers? They are THE BEST. If you want to make jeans, check out the ginger jeans (stretch) or dawn jeans (non-stretch) patterns. They come with extensive instructions, sewalong blog posts, tons of pictures on their hashtags on instagram and lots of blogposts from sewists reviewing the patterns. + The home sewist community on instragram is super cozy and helpful.

This is such an interesting challenge! I used to be obsessed with capsule wardrobes, never really made one, but it really helped with figuring out my colors and styles. And sewing so many different pieces on your own is fantastic. I mean, knits and jackets require a whole different set of skills, even pants end jeans are usually assembled differently. You're very brave, very talented and should be incredibly proud of yourself!
P.S. Is it possible to lengthen the blouse sleeves by inserting lace somewhere around chest level? The sleeves seem to be wide enough not to have an elbow dart or anything, so hypothetically it won't make the fit uncomfortable. And lace insertions can add a vintage vibe, too.

    👍😉👍
You have mastered sewing. You can master knitting, start simple with larger needle and thinker yarn. Do your sample knits to master your unique tension to work out the natural gauge, then you can guesstimate your favourite needle size. Then half the battle is won? I have a friend who makes knitwear using the technique of macrame ( just putting it out there that there are other ways to make textile)
    P. s. If your not happy with the classic jean top stitch in the gold/mustard colour thread. You could go back to textbook fabric colour matching thread. Nice way to add some sneaky detail or hide your poor top stitch around the zip. We all do it, 🤪 not everyday is a perfect sewing day. 🤓

The knit jumper: my really good quality sewn jumpers have transparent elastic in the shoulder seams. Also, one needs to use a fraction of the width of the neckline/hem/wrist measurement for the finishings there. The fraction related to how much the fabric stretches.

I recently discovered your channel. This is a great video! How did the pandemic help you in the quest for your self made wardrobe? It pushed me to basics that fit, my shoulders are a standard size smaller than my hips no matter what my weight. Being free of RTW turtlenecks for my winter sweated collection is a pure joy.

I made up the pattern for that one. Started with a basic dress bodice, then drew on lines for where I wanted the new cuts to be. I get the most comments on that piece, so I'm hoping to remake it and do a video at some point.

I have the same goal for spring summer this year, but it's January as im purchasing the patterns and looking at fabric on sale from last summer. I'm giving myself a lot of time. Maybe one piece a week or two weeks if it's a harder item. I'm glad to see your honestly about the knits. I was wondering how to approach sewing cardigans and now based on your experience I think I'll avoid it. I also need to learn to knit.

I found some Merino wool Jersey from New Zealand on Etsy, I haven't tried it yet but it's Merino Wool. From New Zealand. They both have good reports.
Merino wool Is very warm, barely itchy, (it's not Kashmir, so don't expect Kashmir) very soft, and comfortable against the skin.
Ps. apparently you can soften up some wools by putting a little bit of hair conditioner in the wash with it.

You’re very critical of yourself. The sweater and blazer looked great on you. The white tank fits beautifully. Perhaps put a zipper in the side and shorten a bit. The sleeves on the white blouse are bracelet length. Buy an inexpensive chunky bracelet and you’ve got it. The first skirt you didn’t like looks great. I’m someone who sets benchmarks and goals for everything including my sewing. We both need to relax.

I rarely make a garment without making a toile first. I'm very non standard size, so it's essential. It also saves putting in all the work and finding you haven't got a wearable garment. The shoulders on the blue jacket are far too wide for you, which inhibits arm moving. I liked the jumper you discarded and the skirt would be fun with dark tights (pantyhose) underneath and sneakers.

6:54 does anybody know where I can find a pattern like this side closure/wrap pinafore dress? I'm looking at Reconstructing History's 1940's patterns, because that's what it reminds me of, but none have buttons on the side of the bodice like that.
Thank you so much in advance to anyone who knows where I could look.
