    Brian is a far superior song writer. The wall of Sound is just "layers of instruments". Brian wrote amazing songs with original chord changes, complex harmonies and amazing hooks. Brian's music catalog showcases his evolving genius. Spector never evolved. He was a one trick pony.

    • @TheDylandProductions
      @TheDylandProductions 3 года назад +4

      Spector wanted "the greatest LIVE sound of all time." No (or, at least, minimal) overdubs. Dozens of musicians all crammed into one tiny room playing at the same time, creating magic in the moment. Brian Wilson, The Beatles, and countless other artists revolutionized, as you said, "using the studio as an instrument." Which allowed them to do more.
      But they're apples and oranges. When Spector was talking about Hitchcock films, it's kind of funny, because it seems like the man would have preferred a straight up theatrical play or something. Which was kind of his style. If you compare the Lion King film to the Lion King play, they're two totally different things. It's unfair.
      But, from an entertainment perspective, I enjoyed myself significantly more at the Lion King broadway show than the film. Same with a lot of other plays. IDK how to describe it, just you can feel the energy and charisma - something that's often lost with film. Not that film is lifeless, but it's just a different experience. Same with video games.
      The Phil Spector wall of sound owes a lot to the Wrecking Crew and just session musician tendencies of the time. Some of his records are the last great all-in-one recordings. Basically live, but with such a clean studio sound. And of course very echo-y and boomy!
      Brian Wilson and The Beatles projects (especially mid-to-late 1960's and onward) were more 'how can we make every instrument's take flawless.' And sort of "fix it in post" overdubbing that really spiced up otherwise regular songs for them. (I still contend that Strawberry Fields was nowhere near as great as Nowhere Man, however, it gets an edge up because of the orchestration and trippy mellotron and other instrument experimentation. Same as with Tomorrow Never Knows vs A Day in the Life). But (and the Beatles knew this too) they weren't songs you could ever really play live - unless you had artificial backing, or a ton of musicians... and then guess what, you'd have to train them and have everybody practice for hours on end just to not be heard over the screaming girls.
      Phil Spector brought a live performance "concert" sound into the home. They each deserve merits because they worked to achieve totally different things.

    I'll give Phil Spector his due respect: he was a genius, and he did influence Brian Wilson considerably. There's only catch in my comment though: Phil Spector, the so-called "mentor" was simply not as good as his student, Brian. Brian Wilson's music is by far more musical, more dynamic, has more depth and beauty, and way more forward-thinking and inventive than anything Phil ever did. That is a fact, and I'm a huge fan of both.

    • @Tazmanian_Ninja
      @Tazmanian_Ninja 5 лет назад +3

      ScottMassonPublicTreatments Harmonically, Brian was better than his mentor. And perhaps melodically. But not production-wise, IMO.
      Not that Wilson isn't good. I'm a huge fan of his productions. But he didn't understand "the wall of sound as well as Phil did. It was a richer tapestry that Phil did, and it blended amazingly.
      May also be due to the studio engineer, Larry Levine. Phil used him on most if not all productions.

    I am probably one of the biggest Phil Spector fan and I will admit Phil was a crazy genius. Phil was definitely a better producer then Brian Wilson and also a better businessman. Every track Phil made he owned because he owned his own Record Company Philles Records. Brian Wilson was signed to Capital Records and doesn’t own any of his older stuff and I’m sure Capital gave Brian a album budget which Phil didn’t have no budget so that’s another part of it. Phil would spend $35k to 40k on just 1 song which is around 300k today which is why they far surpass anything Brian every made. Be My Baby alone is a true work of art and you can hear studio takes on RUclips of Phil directing and talking to the musicians trying to get it right! It’s truly amazing what Phil created for being as crazy as he was but I was say The Beach Boys Pet Sounds album was a work of art as well then again Brian used Phils style and technique to create that album and Brian says it in many Interviews. We all look up to someone. I wish Phil was more friendly towards Brian considering the history they have together.

Phil himself used to do the basic track and then overdub strings, background vocals and lead vocals- overdubbing became popular in the 60s and is itself a kind of vertical editing. It's been very rare since the late 60s for pure live in the studio recordings to be released, as overdubbing, editing and many other studio techniques have been used and developed: the Beatles "Get back" was an attempt to do this, but halfway through they just gave up

      Paul McCartney couldn`t stand Phil Spector, but he loved Brian Wilson, so i don`t think Phil Spector had anything to do with the Beatles making Sgt. Peppers, or Brian making Pet sounds for that matter. Brian made Pet Sounds after hearing "Rubber soul" by the Beatles. And the Beatles made Sgt. Peppers after being inspired by Pet sounds. It had nothing to with crazy Phil. Crazy Phil got into a huge conflict with Paul McCartney when he butchered "The long and winding road" with the wall of sound that Paul didn`t want at all for that number.

    @peanut71968 7 лет назад +6

    Hmm, no Phil Spector, no Brian Wilson? Seems Spector got his inspiration from Berry Gordy of Motown fame so how about no Berry Gordy, no Brian Wilson! Wilson proves his musical prowess by writing a tune perfect for "The Ronettes", (Don't Worry Baby), rejected by Spector, actually Spector's ego, to go on an produce the tune for The Beach Boys, which becomes a hit. "Good Vibrations", produced by Wilson, invokes the "sound" achievable only by recording in different "rooms" (studios) in and around LA. In the dat, each studio had the capability if producing a specific "sound". This is based on the equipment in the control room an the natural acoustics of the area where the recordings took place. Wilsons genius is in his ability to create those unique sounds from each studio then combine them into one recording. While Spector "scoffs" at Wilsons productions as "edited", I urge the readers to understand Spector's efforts on the "Wall of Sound" is effected by over saturation of physical instrumentation and layering these into a mix, pushing the "one take" technique, which had existed as the traditional method of recording since the inception of the art. So Spector did nothing "new"! Wilson, on the other hand, Wilson figured out how to combine the acoustic properties of multiple studios into one extremely unique sound and, use a totally new instrument, the "theremin". Finally, Spector calling Wilson "coo coo"?

You don’t pull guns out and threaten people or kill someone which we all know eventually happened if the person themselves isn’t someone who is hurting.

    Everyone knows he was a great producer but the guy was a violent narcissist from day one. Honestly, it’s just depressing to me that someone like that was revered for so many years, despite his abusive outbursts being well known (although obviously the full extent of his shittiness would not be known for many years). I hope we get to a point as a society where being talented and successful does not give you a free pass for to be an asshole.

    Phil was great, and as Phil says, Brian was almost as great. What Phil could never figure out, however, was how I produced my random sounds track. It bugged him and drove him crazy, but I didn't want to show him how. I thought it best at some point if the master steps back and tests whether the student can progress a bit on his own.

    It’s pretty fucked up that Brian has said for five decades that he loved Phil and and looked up to him only for Phil to shit on him in return. His “edit record” remarks are null and void considering The Beach Boys (and various BW bands) have performed all of those difficult classics live. Go watch them perform Good Vibrations on Ed Sullivan and you’ll know that their talent was not limited to studio tricks and magic. It’s a shame guys like Phil are so competitive, as it only hurts their legacy.

    Phil is right as usual. He isnt knocking Good Vibrations. He is more saying that Be My Baby and what Brian attempted to "compete" with concerning Phil's production arent even the same type recorded songs. Therefore a competition doesnt even exist or could it possibly exist.
    I do get an underlying idea that Phil is not so much a fan of "edit songs" or films for that matter. Probably disliked Star Wars lol.
    What Phil did in so many instances was not only to catch a complete magical take of the best songs he produced, but he also caught lightning in a bottle. This is impossible to replicate as to what he achieved in giving those songs a particular sound full of energy, bite and life.
    Great songs, in Phil's understanding, are complete flowing works that say as much musically as through words. "Be My Baby", for example, leaves one with a feeling of what a girl wants and is excited for in a boy in a way that many of the best songs about a boy being crazy for a girl would. Not an easy feeling to put in a 3 minute or less time period.
    I would absolutely disagree that Brian Wilsons production work makes Phil Spector seem like dog doo. That is so far revisionistic bullshit that it stinks without sitting foot in the studio. I love The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson. If anyone is a genius, Brian is. But just like Dylan in recent years, Brian has been near mythologized which is fine until that worship turns its fan fangs on a master at his art also such as Phil Spector was. I think, unfortunately so, Phils personal life has tainted his reputation also. Which in turn set fans somewhat against the man.
    But purely musically speaking? Anyone who places Phil Spectors achievements as anything but genius level is simply talking out their backends.

    Brian's mind/brain is a lot more developed and different from Phil's. Brian could come up with a complex songwriting, put together harmonies and instruments in a way that no other person on Earth has ever done. Especially not Phil. Sure he made a few rememberable pop songs, but that's it. It's just layers of instruments, whilst Brian not only had layers, but a way of putting those layers together, each layer being a song of its own. Take for instance Cabinessence, This whole world, Surf's up, the whole of Smile...
    And (!): God only knows is certainly not an edit...
    Besides Brian is a humble person - Phil a rotten egg...
    Now where have we heard that before...? "I'm a genius too"... 😂🤬🤮

    Yes, indeed, Phil's genius production technique (The Wall of Sound) was genuinely remarkable & unique, to say the least. It was a historical innovation that left its mark on the pop music broadcast era of the sixties.
    This 1982 cult classic single (-A-side) has been unanimously accused of emulating Phil's Wall of Sound while also mimicking the songwriting style of the early Stones records.

    I bet Phil Spector wasn't a fan of sampling and hip hop (if he thinks "edit records" are somehow less impressive ways of making music). I lik Phil's work from the late 50's through to the mid 60's but Brian Wilson did a lot more than just try to reach Phil's Wall of Sound and by late 1965 was more motivated by beating the Beatles than Phil Spector. In the end both Brian and Phil composed, produced and arranged 3 US number one singles but those Beach Boys albums like Pet Sounds , Smile (as per the 2011 Smile Sessions), Friends, Today! and even Surfer Girl and All Summer Long I'll listen to all the time but I almost never spin a Phil Spector record, except those later on when he produced other artists like John Lennon.

      @@chrislancaster6456 I know it's a late response, but Phil Spector notoriously overproduced Let it Be after George Martin was pushed from the project. His work with Lennon I'm not sure, but his work with Harrison I absolutely hate. All Things Must Pass has so many great songs and playing, but they're so drowned out and undefined a la "the wall of sound" that you can't really appreciate any one part of the song since it all just blends together into one jumbled mess.
