Finally got mine! Huge fan so far. More pocketable than I expected which is great. I was worried itd be too big to edc at all. Love your videos! I'm always trying to find Canadian knife videos.
I thought my recon 1 tanto was a “big knife” at first. But after I got the 4-Max Scout and started carrying that while walking my dog, now my Recon 1 seems like a “quaint, gentleman’s edc”.
I just got my recon 1 tanto about two weeks ago// and after watching many reviews and hearing people say how big it was i guess i was expecting a behemoth of a knife.. but its feels normal to me// i also oiled the pivot and that made it better to me
Power to you-I personally agree that that should be the case… but it’s still a consideration some people have to make depending on their living and work environment.
I've got an old half serrated one in AUS8A. Absolutely love everything about it. The steel is SO easy to keep screaming sharp with a strop (which is good because a half serrated tanto generally isn't lol) . I've got Spyderco, I've got ZT, I've got Chris Reeve, but I always go back to my Recon 1 tanto when I need a knife and have no idea what sorts of things I might need to cut that day.
I EDC a Recon 1, I DON'T care what anyone thinks or says when I pull it out. Where I live you can open and conceal carry any knife except a ballistic knife. Sometimes A cop will look at me funny when I have my knife LEGALLY brandished, and that lets me know they are new here,
I've EDC a recon tanto for about 12 years, the old aus8 version, used so much that the texture is essentially rounded over now. I've used it how I would use a fix blade, batoning/throwing/prying/picking you name it, and there is ZERO wobble or play. Just as solid as day one and is actually much smoother I REALLY miss cold steels old g10, the new stuff is too slick for my liking especially on the big (5.5") espada, any bit of sweat or gunk and it might as well be glass lol Should've bought more especially when they went to XHP, found one of the rare XL recons with that steel and grippy scales for sale and am tempted
The Recon 1 Clip Point is definitely one of the best knives I own. I like the 4Max, Lawman and the Aus10 verdict, but if I could only grab one it would probably be the recon.
A great knife but after watching joeX a soldier would carry the less sexy but much stronger SR1 lite tanto - it didn’t break but the recon1 tanto did - the harder steels in general tend to fracture where the SR1 lite in tanto or clip point lite are simply tanks - there triad locks are as reliable as all cold steel triad - look for yourself - Joe X goes farther than most but he shows the weaknesses
Nice! I made a note to check that video out this weekend. The Recon 1 has become so iconic that it can definitely be a little overhyped (I’m guilty of this myself). The relatively thin profile and ergos of the recon 1 appeal to me more, but I don’t doubt the SR1 lite tanto can take more punishment. Thanks for the input!

Just got mine but my tri-ad lock is very tight to push in and makes a cunching sound when pressing it,.is this normal? It still locks and snaps into place when i fold out the blade, but when i press the lock to release the blade its very stiff.
Absolutely normal! People (myself included) will end up with sore thumbs the first week or so of owning a new Recon 1. The crunching sound may be a bit of grit in the moving parts. Like with most folding knives, that WILL happen, but can be remedied most easily with compressed air to clean it out, then a LITTLE BIT of knife lube or some decent oil to smooth things out. Within a few weeks it’ll be broken in nicely so long as you’re using it/playing with it every now and then.
@@HardOnGearChannel hey thanks for your reply, i did some seaching and read somewhere that you can leave the blade open in a 90 degree angle for a few days which helps break it in, i tried this and it helped only a little, i also watched a video where someone pulled it apart and manipulated the spring but i wasnt prepared to do that so what i did was put the knife in a vice but found some wooden dowels i used as braces to clamp the triad lock and knife grip in the vice so i wouldnt damage the paint etc and then squeezed in the release, i pushed it in enough where the blade released but then gently squeezed it in a bit futher so it went beyong what my thumb could do. Then when i pulled the knife out the vice and gave it a flick then tried the triad lock and OMG its amazing! just enough tension to be harty but its perfect where i can one hand flick the blade out and then release it back, im so happy with it i use it at work now opening boxes, cutting plastic wrap and straps etc also use it around home for odd jobs its defs my new favourite EDC at first it seemed quite large but its so damn ergonomic and comfy i love it.

You are 100% correct. Canadian and US military have standard issue Gerber Multitools. From what I’ve seen, Infanteers from Pte to Sgt (most people above Sgt use keyboards and radios more than tools…) are more than happy with their Gerber or Leatherman plier-style multitool, and that’s all they’ll ever carry. I’d say from what I seen in the CAF, probably 30-50% of infanteers/combat arms soldiers carry an additional folder or fixed blade. Occasionally, you run into a weirdo like me who likes to carry all three 🤷♂️
People (military in this case) that use these tools on a daily basis know pocket knives and multitools are not comparable in the least bit and you're comparing backhoes to bulldozers lol. When it comes to cutting tasks on a regular basis a multitool blade is a backup plan at best compared to a good dedicated pocket knife. When I need a blade I need it in my hand right here right now in a one handed fail proof fashion and really that should transfer over to anyone in any setting. I myself carry the OD green drop point version of the Recon 1 and out of a few hundred knives I own from big, small, cheap, expensive, and everywhere in between.. no matter what else Im carrying that day the Recon 1 goes everywhere.
I baton wood all the time with all my cold steel knifes have not break that tri ad lock yet. Blade breaks way before that lock would ever break. I broke a lot of cold steel blade lock never never broke the tri-ad lock
Same here, my old Recon 1 has been through hell and back. It’s got a little blade wobble, and I had worn the tip right off, but that lock still holds up!
If I can't have a big ole knife in the days of Noah then when can I. Jesus would carry a big ole knife in these days. After all it's the time of the wrath of the Lamb.
It's why it is called a tactical folder. Not a package opener. Batoning with any knife in survival, was to split sticks, not bloody logs! You should use any knife for what intended. Over time any knife could break, especially when you actually need it. But to do it with a folder is dumb! There are plenty of twigs to start a fire, then gather bigger sticks. Stop copying idiots on RUclips!
Your in the military!? What are you the stationary man!? A man goes his own way. Who cares what ppl think of it, man? Do you do backflips for Karens? As long as its legal its in! Hmm… superlative statements like that can be a bit overkill. Literally 95% of the soldiers I work with have a folding knife (or sometimes just a multitool with a blade) in their pocket for EDC tasks. There’s convenience, weight, and practicality to factor in on top of just pure capability. That being said, out of that 95%, probably 50% of them also have a fixed blade on them as well. These are just rough, anecdotal, meaningless numbers, but all I’m saying is that there’s more than one way to do things and with the amount of gear people might have on them, folders can be a decent compromise of capability vs convenience. All of that aside though, I DO agree with you in that I believe every soldier would probably benefit from having a fixed blade on them. But exclusively? Meh 🤷♂️

@@HardOnGearChannel If i really had to be stabbing and being hard on the knife I'd definitely go with the recon but I don't think ill ever use it for anything hardcore that would warrant the extra heft in the pocket
I've carry recon 1 spearpoint for 12 years now. Can't find a better edc
Hell yeah 🤘
I carry the tanto recon 1, and a wharncliffe kershaw launch 13 auto.
@@anonymoose2474 Nice!
The tanto recon 1 is to blunt for me !
My guess is that most would prefer a Leatherman.
As a soldier, I prefer the Spartan 🤷🏻♂️
Fair enough. Heck of a knife! Can’t wait to grab one at some point.
Bench made is way to expensive in my mind I couldn't afford it.
You can definitely get better bang for your buck out of Cold Steel, no doubt.
@@HardOnGearChannel yes you can I like the budget cold steel knifes because I know how hard I will be on it but try not to be.
😂
If I can't have a big ole knife in the days of Noah then when can I. Jesus would carry a big ole knife in these days. After all it's the time of the wrath of the Lamb.
It's why it is called a tactical folder. Not a package opener. Batoning with any knife in survival, was to split sticks, not bloody logs! You should use any knife for what intended. Over time any knife could break, especially when you actually need it. But to do it with a folder is dumb! There are plenty of twigs to start a fire, then gather bigger sticks. Stop copying idiots on RUclips!
Thanks for your opinion. Also, maybe relax a little? Smoke a joint, have a tug, take a nap. You seem angry at nothing 🤷♂️
Your in the military!? What are you the stationary man!? A man goes his own way. Who cares what ppl think of it, man? Do you do backflips for Karens? As long as its legal its in! Here in Australia we have NO laws with length nor how 'nasty' a knife looks whatsoever. You can carry a friggin sword down the street IF you have a reason. Seen blokes walking around with 9" bowies on their belts and you worried about a pocket knife 🤣and your wrong, S36VN is the worst steel the Recon 1 was made in. Its brtittle...JoeX proved that. Do some research.
Hey Judgey McJudgerson… relax. You seem pretty sure of yourself. I’m just giving my opinions based on my experience.
You keep tossing your opinions around like their gospel-I’ll keep trying to become more balanced in my opinions and delivery of information. Not everyone has be a hard-charging “this is the way it is” kinda guy. I used to be… and upon reflection, I feel like a bit of asshole about my past behaviour and demeanour.
Enjoy continuing to get your ego boosts from commenting on the internet. Good day to you.
Bragging about being able to carry knives while guns are severely restricted and then telling someone else to "do research" is a great example of dumbed down sheep following unjust laws and being happy about it. You're saying this dude does backflips for Karen's but you're afraid to fight your government for the right to carry guns 😂.I also can carry whatever I want down the street, INCLUDING GUNS, because I'm from the great state of Texas.
"I'm from Australia I can carry knives and swords!"
Big effin deal, I can carry my shottie AND a sword.
@@Adrianfytr46 Oh to have been born a Texan… one day I’ll have to get my butt down there and check it out 🤙
@@HardOnGearChannel One great thing about Texas is that everyone is welcome here, EVERYONE. Stupid behavior is usually discouraged though lol.
We have a bumper sticker made for new Texans: "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could".
@@Adrianfytr46 So he can't defend himself, he needs some testy filled kid? Your arguement makes no sense. You expect one man to 'fight the gubment'? Right... You never studied Tsun Tsu did you?
Yet your arguement is flawed. Walk into any gubment department in Texas with your gun and see what happens. In fact start walking down the street with it. The constitituion has been lost in the U.S., my defecting friend...there is no 'peace and happiness' if they can harass the hell out of you.
I improvise and trained since I was 8, have 18" arms work out in 43 degree heat in the sun ALL day...and thats not all I have. And a sword while sort of portable is not your best choice either, especially in a SHTF situation against number or beasts. A spear is. Proves to me your a city kid, probaly from Melbs, am I right? With me its the Territory, man country, and not foor your coolaid simp friend here 🤣 In summary your a bigger hypocrite than I am then, aren't you. I'll let you get back to preaching for your Master grifter, Boy.
You must have girly hands if you thank it's too large, just saying
Opinions on knives is like as*h*les . I don't care about anyones mouth diarrhea especially in the beginning of the 7year trib.
In the real world, a soldier should exclusively carry fixed blades.
Meh 🤷♂️
