This is so Cool! I think every elementary school should have a Butterfly Waystation. Thank you Jenny and Miss Mimi for sharing your garden with us. Best thing I have seen in a long time and makes me hopeful for the future of butterflies.
Nice! So good of you to discuss the importance of host plants. Birds eat 95 percent of caterpillars. Baby birds can only eat soft insects and caterpillars are the best for them. Sounds like a lot but it’s always been that way. Less caterpillars less butterflies but also less birds. We have decimated our bird and butterflies/moth population by destroying their host plants and insecticides. Planting more host plants so important. Well done Mimi!
I was just coming here to say the same thing!! I love hearing people with an audience talk about host plants and the importance of native flora and fauna!!
It is so exciting to see these special visitors. I planted dill just so I could encourage these critters to make my yard their home or snack bar. I have seen one of each and am so happy!
I have a Miss Huff that I planted 10 years ago. The butterflies and hummingbirds visit all summer long It's planted right outside my backdoor which has a window. That way I can see the butterflies and hummingbirds without going out . Just love this plant.
I have had an unofficial Monarch Way station for 3 years. I have not had one monarch caterpillar. I live in Illinois so maybe that has something to do with it. I’m so happy for your mom. I know how exciting it would be for me to have all that activity in my garden.
What a great idea to have the waystation and take the opportunity to share how all of the plants are needed for different life stages. So exciting to see the caterpillars.
This is sooooo wonderful ! I have a huge Milkweed plant in my garden to feed the Monarch's . But sadly, I have had no chrysalis"s at all !!! I have seen a few Monarchs landing but nothing ! I live in Toronto, ON. Perhaps the birds get to them first ! But this project of yours makes my heart so happy. God Bless !
My daughter who lives across the street from me has milkweed plants in her front flower bed. Now I need to go over and see if I can see any caterpillars!
We have Lantana & four o'clocks and one large firefly fire bush shrub around the house & near the front & back porch. . .its a sight to see them crossing through the porch to travel to the next plant. Even hummingbirds like the same plants. Sometimes we have to duck to avoid collision. Thinking about making a butterfly & hummingbirds crossing sign 😊🦋
As a fellow teacher the catapillars “hatch” from the eggs and the butterflies “emerge “ from their chrysalis. Great explanation of the differences in food sources between the catapillars and the mature form of the butterflies. Great!
I plant fennel every year just for this reason. Now I have swallowtails flying around everywhere. My husband even commented about the amount of butterflies in our yard. I live in New bern NC.
I saw some blue mist flowers covered in monarch butterflies in Michigan. There were so many that when I first saw them I thought they were fake. Went to Austin Tx botanical garden a week later and was excited to find some seeds to plant in my garden next year.
Mimi motivates and inspires me daily to get off my butt and into the garden. I even started a butterfly garden patch as well and it has been so incredibly fun for myself and my young girls. Love you guys!
What a wonderful video and full of education! Thank you for this Jenny! So, fantastic for Mimi's butterfly garden! As Grandma always told me, "Plant them and they will come" lol
I always try and do plant dill, parsley and other butterfly friendly plants in my garden! I plant plenty of plants for us all! Lol In my old house I would walk through a cloud of butterflies, of all types, in the morning it was such a joy! I am working on my new garden at our new place to create the same effect! Great video thanks!👏🏼👏🏼❤️
Hello Jenny, Thank you for sharing this. I had a similar situation occur to me. I planted parsley and cilantro, and both were eaten down to the ground. Upon inspection, I discovered caterpillars on them. Unsure of the species, I searched online and found that caterpillars eating parsley were likely those of the black swallowtail butterfly. Despite the loss of my parsley and cilantro, I was willing to sacrifice my parsley and ciltantro for this beautiful creature.
Way to go Mimi!! I’d love to do this! Is it too late? I’m in the Tx panhandle and saw a monarch yesterday while watering my flowers! I was so excited! Also, how do they put the stickers on them? That’s so fascinating!! 🦋
I have seen a few up here in upstate, and they are still here in mid-September. I love seasoning these in my garden with hummingbirds and bumble bees. I don't like honey bees or wasps. But like everything, you need to take the good and the bad. I tell myself I'm doing something for the environment.
So wonderful, Jenny!! I have to check my butterfly weed. I'm hoping that they have stopped by. I have the fluff. So I'll have more growing soon. I live free seeds. Thank you so much! I'm so happy for your, mom, as well!
I have been a Waystation raising and releasing Monarchs for 7 years in Northern IL. Mimi has a beautiful waystation. Is she going to tag some Monarchs? I had one make it to Mexico 2 years ago!!! I was over the moon. So rewarding!
I spotted my first Monarch in my yard this year in Northern Al. I keep checking my milkweed but haven’t seen any signs of caterpillars from it. I’ve had several families of swallow tails born though. I’ve got everything but dill because they’ve killed the baby plants every time before it can get strong.
Thank you for sharing! Mimi, it is so pretty! Now I want to go out and check my parsley for swallowtails. I am going to try to plant some fennel for them next year, I don't like fennel but I love my black swallowtails. Android users similar search option. (This works on my Samsung) bring up the photo in your gallery, click share, select Google Image search. Might need to scroll to find Google Image search the first few times of using it.
That’s so amazing to see all those caterpillars thanks for sharing that! Do the caterpillars spin their cocoons there too on those plants or do they go somewhere else?
It is also very important to have a food source for those caterpillars that form chrysalises and those chrysalises eclose to monarch butterflies in a few weeks. These monarchs are very hungry as they embark on their journey to Mexico!!
We are not allowed to grow milkweed here! They are on EUs invasiv list in Europe… I guess our butterfly larvey eats other plants! 🫣 This is soo cool! I loove that you show this. I have tried to find plants to get more butterflies to survive here in Sweden! 🦋 I never liked zinnias & rudbeckias but I guess I have to have them somewhere in my garden 😂 Lots of love to you Jenny & Mimi from Sweden 🇸🇪

Congratulations to MiMi for a very successful stewardship of the butterflies! Can’t wait to see what she does in the spring. 👏🐛
Yet another reason why I love your momma’s garden 😁
Mimi, we love your gardens! And we can see the Butterflies love you too ❤
This was fun and informative as well. Thank your mom for letting us visit her garden.

They absolutely love Mexican Sunflowers! It's the only time I see Monarchs here around me in NJ.

I love visiting Mimi’s gardens with you!
Yup, and I also sacrifice a tomato plant for the Horn worm caterpillar 🐛. They also grow up to be beautiful pollinator.
What a great idea to have the waystation and take the opportunity to share how all of the plants are needed for different life stages. So exciting to see the caterpillars.
The Little Garden That Could....and Did! Couldn't be happier for Mimi (and the monarchs!) 🦋🦋🦋
You have been a HUGE blessing to her and her Monarch journey! Thanks for all of your wisdom & encouragement!!!

One year I brought in the fennel branches with the swallowtail caterpillars into the house then released the butterflies. It was so much fun!

Thanks for my biology class. I have really enjoyed it!
That is so doggone exciting! Thanks for the insight on how to attract monarchs. Definitely on my list of things to accomplish.
Black swallowtails lay their eggs on my fennel foliage (similar-looking to dill). SOOOOO enjoyed this video - thank you Jenny & Mimi!!!
Wow so neat to see the caterpillars up close! Thank you!
Great job Mimi! ❤

Way to go Mimi!!!
I found they like celery plants too. I try to have host plants every year. I always look forward to Butterfly Season 🦋
This was fun to hear what Mimi is doing, I live in south east Texas and I have not seen any Monarchs as of now. Still waiting
Thx Jenny. We do add host plants in our garden
I plant fennel every year just for this reason. Now I have swallowtails flying around everywhere. My husband even commented about the amount of butterflies in our yard. I live in New bern NC.
That’s wonderful to hear!!!
So stinkin happy to see all the monarchs!
I knew you would be!!!! 🧡🖤

Well done. Well done. Well done. ❤❤❤ Butterfly moms. 😊
Good morning GWC Family!🥰
Good morning!

I always have 2 big pots of parsley as host plants!
I didn’t plant Dill this year and the swallowtail caterpillars defoliated my pentas , lesson learned Dill goes back in next year.
This was very interesting. Thanks for the lesson.
I'm for a butterfly way station at Creekside ❤
What a wonderful video and full of education! Thank you for this Jenny! So, fantastic for Mimi's butterfly garden! As Grandma always told me, "Plant them and they will come" lol
I've learned so much from your channel. Ty
The black swallowtail chrysalis will survive over winter and emerge in the spring. We released 15 in spring!
Great to know!
So informative! Thank you! from Quebec, Canada
Thanks for watching!
@@GardeningwithCreekside Love your videos, been following you for years!
Amazing! I ‘ve discontinued all insecticide spraying on my property this year.

I think if you can still plant and have time to get the plants established before your first frost, go for it.
I have seen a few up here in upstate, and they are still here in mid-September. I love seasoning these in my garden with hummingbirds and bumble bees. I don't like honey bees or wasps. But like everything, you need to take the good and the bad. I tell myself I'm doing something for the environment.
So glad the Meme has caterpillars!!! I keep looking for some on my milkweed!
Thank you for the close look at those caterpillars, and the great lesson about host plants!
So wonderful, Jenny!! I have to check my butterfly weed. I'm hoping that they have stopped by. I have the fluff. So I'll have more growing soon. I live free seeds. Thank you so much! I'm so happy for your, mom, as well!

I have planted,by accident, for both butterflies 😊. The ones that prefer😊❤ fennel hatched at least a month ago. I’m in midland SC.

Love the idea of a butterfly way station. Going to do that next year! Thank you!
I just love this. Thank you for educating us ❤.
I think if you find a monarch with a sticker, you should take a picture of it and post to info. on sticker.
This was SO interesting! I never knew…😊
I love this garden. Going to check my butterfly weed today.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for sharing! Mimi, it is so pretty!
Now I want to go out and check my parsley for swallowtails. I am going to try to plant some fennel for them next year, I don't like fennel but I love my black swallowtails.

Looks like my bronze fennel
I plant fennel and milkweed.
🙋
The monarch has moved on to my carrots.
How about a picture of Mimi.
