This video meant a lot to me. I have been going through some things over the past few years and have put it on myself to 'grow up' but I haven't been sure how. But watching this video and learning about Henchman 21's journey, I now know what to do. 21 gets in shape, takes his work and relationships more seriously but he doesn't have to give up the things he loves. That's exactly what I need to do. Thank you!

I feel like so many analyses I've seen have latched on to the themes of failure and generational trauma, but it's clear that there's so much love put into each character, and the show is about so much more than just recognizing the flaws of each character, but about loving each character despite their flaws (what other show could the redemption of sergeant hatred exist?). Thanks for your thoughts on the love and growth of the characters in this show

Henchman 21 is one of my favorite characters too- I feel like his evolution represents the evolution of series, in a way.

Here’s the thing; I don’t think Rusty wants to grow up out of being a hero.
He talks about it a lot but it just feels more like the world of heroes and villains is just easier than actually dealing with his problems.
The other bit is that the world doesn’t want to let him. Secret government operations, the comfort of living in such monotony and how he copes by being the dad to clones who are just seen as an extension of his trauma and his inability to move on are his coping mechanisms. That now he’s no longer the child in peril and, if they’re successful, then he gets to live vicariously through them.
The annual vacation he takes to an island where he was held hostage and the residents keep up this charade of fun traditions to this day because they pitied him? That’s an embodiment of it.
The hand a person is dealt with will affect them in life. However, part of growing up is realising that you are both part of the bigger picture and yourself. It’s easy to stay miserable and stew. It’s harder to actually get the help you need and make that first step.
The bit about bureaucracy makes me chuckle in the fact that all it alludes to is just all it does is perpetuate the song and dance of it all. That to keep up this “eternal struggle between good and evil”, there has to be all of the red tape. Because, if there wasn’t, half of each side would have died years ago. The game would have stopped.

Let me start by saying I’ve been a very big Venture Brothers since day one. In fact I even remember all the “coming soon” hoopla back jn the day before the pilot dropped. But please understand that I’m not saying this to claim myself as an expert or guru, far from it. And that’s the beauty of this show, it’s pulls you and is so layered, that no one is with the exception of the creators.
But what makes my love of the show a bit different is that I’m actually part of the era where I remember Johnny Quest when the show was in its first run and that’s what really pulled me in. Truth be told, I was and still am a proud card carrying nerd from way way back. This Venture chick may be a seriously grown ass woman but it’s doesn’t stop me enjoying this epic show and others like it and at the same time I’m living my adult life and gratefully holding down decently. In fact, my adult daughter and I consider this show and MST3k main our jam.
Anyway, I feel like this video is talking to me and I’m totally here for it. For me you basically hit the nail on the head with this topic.

The venture brothers, lots of sets of brothers, the boys, jj and rusty, rusty and monark, the boys and Dermit. Rusty is a clone himself he didn't create it, the clone program was his fathers he just kept it going and added onto it.

I would say that in this context, Rusty was *not* allowed to grow up (he has mentioned the treatment by his father), only to be forced into it without a chance to learn, failing hard and breaking in the process.
