  • Her course from Faliro Museum to Hellenic Shipyards for repairs and maintenance on 26th of April 2017.
Filmed by Vlasios Giannakainas and Christos Athanasiou.
Cover photo: a 1:100 r/c museum model in sea waters, scratch build by Panagiotis Chrissovergis.
    History:
Georgios Averof (Greek: Θ/Κ Γεώργιος Αβέρωφ) is a modified Pisa-class armored cruiser built in Italy for the Royal Hellenic Navy in the first decade of the 20th century. The ship served as the Greek flagship during most of the first half of the century. Although popularly known as a battleship (θωρηκτό) in Greek, she is in fact an armored battle cruiser (θωρακισμένο καταδρομικό), the only ship of this type still in existence.
The ship is regarded as in active service, carrying the Rear Admiral's Rank Flag a square blue flag with white cross, like the Greek jack, with two white stars in each of the two squares on the flagstaff side atop the mainmast with the Masthead Pennant (a long triangular blue flag with a white orthogonal Greek cross) displaced downward.
Film starts with the Honor: Every Hellenic Navy ship entering or sailing in Faliro Bay honours Averof while passing. The crew are ordered to attention (with the "Still to" order) and from the relevant Boatswain's pipe (or bugle call) every man on decks stands to attention, officers saluting, looking to the side where Averof is in sight until "Continue" is ordered.
In 1984 the Navy decided to restore her as a museum ship, and in the same year she was towed to Palaio Faliro, where she is anchored as a functioning floating museum.

Wonderful to see how the Hellenic Navy works to preserve its heritage. By comparison, the USS OLYMPIA (1894), the oldest steel warship in the world, and flagship of the first international action of the modern American Navy, all but rots in Philadelphia harbor. Numerous private and civic organizations have pooled their meager resources to install emergency pumps in her, because she is in imminent danger of sinking at her berth. The US Navy distances itself from these "historical preservation efforts" which urgently require $20 million to save the vessel. The US Congress approves hundreds of billions for the navy's military functioning, but can't do what's needed to save the ship that represents a key milestone in US naval heritage.

Bill B., I really wish all of your efforts to come out with a good result for USS OLYMPIA. 'Preservation' is not a famous word here in Greece. We have some exceptions and AVEROF is one of them.

Thanks for the good wishes. We'll certainly never see a moment quite like this in Philadelphia. The OLYMPIA (unlike the GEORGIOS AVEROF's position in the Hellenic Navy) is not a commissioned ship. Basically, her status is that of a donation of scrap metal to those who might wish to care for her. Our Congress would have to recommission the vessel as a historical figurehead of the US Navy, in order for it to receive the care bestowed upon the AVEROF. That's not about to happen, as the US government doesn't wish to mix preservation with military spending. For many here, the OLYMPIA also represents the US Navy's first step toward become a worldwide force. Politically, while this is a reality, it is frowned upon by many people in America, who do not want the country to shouder the burden of being a global policeman.

USS Olympia is oldest steel american warship. There is NHLMS Buffel (1868), NHLMS Schorpionen (1868) or Huascar (1866) in Chile. All steel warships, all afloat.
Its pity, that is a problem to get amount of money similar for building a big parking lot or small building to repair historical ship. In Soviet Russia, they "repaired" Aurora (second existing protected cruiser) by cutting lower half (underwater) of a hull and build it new.
With steel ships, it is necessary to do a repairs every 20 years in dry dock, like filmed there with Georgios Averoff.
If my information is correct, Olympias is in water since 1945.

sorry to hear that Bill, hope they find the money to restore her, its pity to let old historical ships to rot or sell to scrap. its sad that the congress dont want to found some importand ships of old days.
