I’ve had that 458 for years. I’ve worked half the world with it and no other radios come close for transmit audio. I get compliments constantly. It’s got a great receiver too and is very stable.
Nice Radio John, Those old Radio Shack bases and mobiles were sturdy and always looked great. Never like the 5 pin din either or most folks. They have lasted all these years and still work well if taken care of and not used for a boat anchor. Thanks for sharing always love the old ones. 73s from NY202

I always had a love ❤️ for these old radios . I’ve played around with a few , just never been at the right place at the right time to find a keeper . The receiver in them is is unbelievable compared to today’s Chinese garbage 🤐. That lady on the Vector 4K antenna sounds like she’s standing behind you and a great sounding station !! She was spot on frequency!! Unlike my Galaxy that drifts like Clint Eastwood on the desert plains hahaha ,, but soon enough I’ll have one of my “new to me” Yaesu’s or the Icom going as my main Sidebander 👏👏. Great radio !! I have one next to my recliner. Your Washington is a great radio too . Open them both up and put them side by side.. You'll be surprised to see they are pretty close to the same exact radio.
Excellent video Mower Junkie :) also when put Channel 9 on plus Squelch up to quit radio you wait see the Red Led On 40 cube to Channel plus Am/SSB red led blinks and click on off for Channel 9 or 40 Channel cube on ! Plus If PA Speake plug in on mono one ring have NB on and PA on CB / PA switch hear receive on radio !
Love that radio had one back in the 80s which I would have never got rid of it it was opened up so we had the 100 channels in it had a bigger Final in it so it was 50 Watts put out I ran it into a super penetrator and a Four Element horizontal or vertical polarized Moonraker talk to Australia New Zealand and Auckland on regular basis or I could swing the house around to the north and go long way to New Zealand I did that a lot too love that radio really miss it it was the best radio I've ever had
Awsome. I found one in a house that had been abandoned for 20years, saved it from the collapsing roof and mold. Added a newer mic and replaced meter lamps with leds, but meter doesn't work. Cleaned up nice and except the meter works perfect 73s

This trc490 and the trc458 are both uniden based boards and great ssb radios. The trc458 was easy to modify for extra channels. I have both of them and they really perform well. Hope to hear you soon. #15 in MS.

Same internally as the president p400 and uniden Washington. The 457 is sane as the early 2 button president Washington and cobtav139xlr base... pure uniden 858. I have a 139 dlr too. Great radios. What a great radio that was. I used to love the audio in the Realistics. My first was the itty bitty TRC-415 (which honestly didn't sound great until clipping the ALC limiter, but sounded great with a stock mic after that) and my first sideband was the TCR-453. Both are long dead unfortunately.
I Just this week modified one of these for Low, Mid, High, UK band [I am in UK], +10kc, +5kc switches, And FM mode, Fantastic radio and wish i didn't have to give it back to it's owner.
Another "classic" rig 151, the Navaho is a good talking rig especially on SSB. Wire up a nice desk mic and you will be in business. As far as the minor dents and scratches it only gives the rig some character. 73, 770- RI.
A basic Navajo but a nice one just the same. I had a friend (now deceased) who would only use Navajos. He tried out lots of beautiful radios of various makes and models throughout the 80's and 90's but he only wanted his Navajo with a D104 on it.
I have to tell you, you remind me as to what the hobby was and more importantly needs to be again, neighbors no matter the miles apart just visiting and having fun doing it? You certainly have acquired plenty to play with. When the bands really get open the next years, you will be ready to follow the traffic and it will come from all over the world, so don't forget that just before sunset and just before sunup to tune around starting at least 26,330 on the 0s for 40 up for New Zealand all the way to 27,991.25 or thereabout FM for 40 down in England. because they will pop in and make your day. 73s
Forgot to mention, from1972 until 1981 my income was that of a Radio Shack store mgr, ran 9 stores in three states, sold hundreds of these radios. Seems like I set thousands of mobile antennas SWR for my customers !!!

I saw you have a G90, hold on to it, the built-in antenna tuner, plus it will work from 100KCS to 30 megahertz and the built-in tuner will tune almost anywhere, so most of your antennas can safely be tuned and used anywhere, so if you hear then, politely say hello and don't be surprised when they politely say hello back. I have talked to military aircraft over the oceans on SSB. have fun, I have had more fun as a Cber than my 25 years as a Ham. You can also !!!
had to do a double-take. Just this last weekend picked up TWO TRC-458s (both work!), a Turner Plus 3 mic (great condition), a JC Penney PWR/SWR/MOD meter and a Midland antenna tuner all for $100 from a ham near me. When I SAW THIS...... I had to do a quick look.... the only difference I see between that radio and these 458s is the number on the LABEL. The layout and looks of that 490 is identical to the 458s.

I tried radio in my back seat of car. Ran a cord to radio. Powered up. I keyed mic on my 148 in car on 19. That 490 picked up the 19 without a antenna. No never keyed mic on base. Lol
151 I got one just like that in a box I've had it since 1991 or 92 I bought it used ran with a golden eagle 750 amp and a 3 element beam 60 feet in the air we was talkin 35 Charlie said that in the show me state ADIOS
Hey there I live in a 28-foot camper I'm getting ready to put up a 102 steel whip I'm using 1in PVC and I found a mount that will U bolt right up to it I am going to hose clamp it with large hose clamps to the side of my awning my question is how am I going to ground that can I just drill a hole in the bracket and attach Some solid core wire with a nut and Bolt and washer and put the wire down the Mast pipe hope you and your family are doing well hope to hear from you
The TRC-490 has the same chassis as the Uniden Washington / Cobra 142 GTL & was made by Uniden for Radio Shack. The mobile version is the TRC-450 / Cobra 140 GTL.
I have a base similar to this . it is up on the shelf the last guy that worked on it . showed me a metal pin he said there would come at time the radio would not work. I would have to go look to see what no. it is.
I have a 432 40 ch no SSB near mint on my desk that I use for listening, just a stick on the back so don’t TX on there. There’s life out there… ;))))))))

I know this video is 2+ years old, but that "cool sound" you love when changing channels is a sign something is wrong. Likely dirty or corroded contacts somewhere.
Glad to hear! I have the TRC-458 but no 11m antenna at present. I'm a licensed amateur and spend most of my time on 10m but still love reminiscing about the old CB days. Glad it's still alive and well. Also love these older Radio Shack radios. Very well-made. Waiting for the latest skip cycle to get roaring again. @@MowerJunkie

It's essential the same board as the Cobra 142 GTL which in itself was a fine machine.

My first CB was a Radio Shack TRC-52 mobile. I once used it on a road trip from Wisconsin to Texas and back, it was a real performer.

How is the co_phase antennas working with the 102 inch whip on them? Are you still using them or did you go back to your beam?

Mine has red three position switch installed on the underside of unit i dont know what it does any input on what it may be?
it's probably a channel expansion mod. it gives you channels above 40, and below 1.

What would you consider the best overall old school cb? Base anyway
The Uniden Washington will always be My favorite old school base CB.
The old 23 channels are the ones you need to clarify because of the multiple crystals.
